1 PROCESS FLOW

2 PURPOSE AND SCOPE

The purpose of this procedure is to ensure a proper and correct load test for lifesaving appliances and is according to
current SOLAS regulations for Annual inspection, 5-yearly service and Commissioning.

3 DEFINITIONS
SOLAS – Safety Of Life At Sea
LSA – Lifesaving Appliances
SE – Service Engineer
SP – Service Partner
SWL – Safe Working Load

4 RESPONSIBILITY

Service engineer /
- (“A”) Who is Accountable for the activity or decision (Owner)

Service Partner
Only one accountable per activity

Norsafe Sub
Customer /
- (“R”) Who is Responsible (Doer)
Role / area

Contractor
- (“C”) Who must be Consulted
- (“I”) Who must be Informed

Activity
load testing of LSA AR
Test equipment (water bag, steel/concrete weights, load cell etc.) to be
AR
supplied

5 WORK METHOD
1.1 Winch dynamic brake test – using water bag

5.1 WINCH DYNAMIC BRAKE TEST PROCEDURES

This means that a 10% overload must be applied to unit to be tested in our case a davit lowering device

A = fully loaded boat with equipment

B = amount of persons x person weight
TL = required test load

TL= (A +B) x 1.1

TL can now be attached to the winch falls using water bag or steel/concrete weight.

Davit S.W.L x 1.1 = TL and hang the testing equipment from the fall/hook and proceed to release the brake enough so
that the TL can pass through approximately 1.5m and apply the brake.

Please bare the following in mind, when this type of load test is done it is expected that the main brake is completely
released and after the set distance has been covered it should be applied abruptly as to bring the test load to an
immediate still stand.

5.2 WINCH DYNAMIC BRAKE TEST INSTRUCTION WITH WATER WEIGHT

1. Attach water bag to hooks on the davit falls

2. Connect filling hose for water weights
3. Zero digital reader. Photo’s can be taken for Classification purpose
4. Connect water supply hose and fill bag to weight according to calculation
5. Record full weight, photo’s can be taken for Classification purpose
6. Disconnect water supply hose
7. Lower the mass by activating the hydraulic winch “lowering” lever
8. Lower the mass for 1.5m and apply brake
9. Point 8 can be performed 1 - 3 times
10. Hold the load for 5 minutes and observe for slipping.
11. Once tests have been completed, drain water bag before it is hoisted back up and disconnected from the
wire falls
12. Stow and secure the A-frame
13. Inspect for permanent deformations or damages. Conduct NDT on major interface points.
