Applic ‘The FS6 60/FS6 60M is a fully transistorized VIF voice radio of monoblock construction, which can transmit and receive on a1! 720 channels of the aviation band from 118.000 to 135.975 MHz. Channel spacing is 25 klz. These units were designed for use in motorized gliders, gliders, balloons, sports and touring aircrafts ard feature very low power consumption. ‘The FS6 60/F96 60M has an intercon mode (IC) which requires no additional equipnent. The FS6 60/FS6 60M provides 26 Watts of transnitting poner and 5 Nats of audio output Into 4 Ons 23 CAF Dittel GmbH WoO) 738 858m Sefef Description The FSG 60/FSG 60M unit is a monoblock unit and is, designed to be installed into the instrunert panel or contral console of an airerat ANI transceiver components are included within the ‘one housing. AIT controls necessary for operation are Tccated on the Front panel of the unit. On the rear of the FSG 60/FS6 60N are the 14-pin plug and BNC antenna plugs ‘through which the unit is automatically cornected with the on-board wiring when the unit 1s inserted into its sount. The unit's electronics are divided into 3 subassenblies (4 for the FSG 60M), which are easily renpved for servicing. The receiver of the FS6 60/FSG 60H fs designed as a single heterodyne which can be set to a total of 720 channels within the range of 118 to 135.975 Miz. The transmitter of the FSG 6O/FSG GON is wide-band tuned for the range of 118 to 136 MHz. The transait frequency is set with the receive frequency. The transmitter delivers 26 Watts. Wnatever operating frequency is set is indicated by a Sedigit Liquid crystal display (160), with the channel frequencies ending in "25"or "75" displayed as "20%and "7O"respectively, in compliance aith ICA0 Standards. Lighting is available at extra crs. cD is heated when temperature falls below -10°C in order to prevent the typical display lag when cold. Therefore the FS6 60/60H unit can be used 1 a temer- ature range from -40°C to 455°C, short-termup to «71°C. A storage temperature from -55°C to +85°C is peraitted The frequency processing enployed sinul taneously for trans= aiitter and receiver uses digital frequency synthesis. 3.81 WA Dittel GmbH FSG 60/60M | low-frequency filter is already included for operating the unit in those areas of central Eurcpe in which the CLIMAK systen has been introduced. The threshold of the receiver's automatic squelch adapts automatically to the interference Tevel, er can also be switched off (defeated) The microphone input can be switched on in the reception trode, enabling intercom operation within the aircraft through the headset fn additional input of the AF amplifier allows audio signals fron navigation-aid receivers (ADF, YOR, OME, MR) or electronic varioneters to be hearc on the on-board headset or loudspeaker. ‘The operating voltage is electronically menitored. If {it sinks below 17.0 volts, the frequency cisplay blinks. ‘An automatic power-saving circuit prevents unnecessary ower consumption in sone operating modes, thereby extending the operating time available fren one battery charge. Particularly the no-signal current drain in the squelch (SQ) mode is reduced to the very low level of approx. 55 mA In the FSG 60H, up to 4 channet frequencies can be stored, ready for recall in a mechanical frequency manorys indepenient of the frequency setector. The frequency menory 1s accessible after the transceiver is pulled out of its mount. A coin can be used to set the frequencies. They are re- called with the channel selector. Channel 2 programmed For 123.375 mie Fig. 4-3 Programming Examcle WA Dittel GmbH FSG 60/60M SECTION V ELECTRICAL OPERATION Bl 5.2 3.81 Foreword Referring to the block diagran, the electrical operation of the FSG 60/F56 604 transceiver will be expleined. The FS6 60 and FSG 60M is divided into seven ard eight electrical functional groups respectively: Frequency Synthesizer, Receiver, Rudio (AF) amplifier, Transmitter, Voltage Regulator, Frequency Selection, Frequency Display, and for the 60M, Channel Frequency Menory. Functional Description (with lock Diagran Fig. 5-1) Frequency Synthesizer ‘The transmission and injection frequencies for the cchannel frequencies fron 118.000 to 135.975 Miz are prepared with 25 Hie spacing Because the heterodyne frequency in the receiver Ties 410.0 Miz above the chanret frequency, the synthesizer frequency is 118,00 to 135.975 Miz in transmit node, and 128.00 to 145.975 Milz in receive mode. For this purpose a voltage: controlled osci Matar (WOO) js used, the tuning of which Ties in a contro? Toop. The VCO output frequency is fod to a dual modulus pre- sceler (dividing ratios, 80 and 81). The output frequency of this prescaler (approx. 1.47 Miz to 1.82 Miz) is fed paralTel to the main counter (¥Hz divider) and the auxiliary counter (létz divider) which act both as, dow=counters. The entire divider/counter chain operates at a sycle Frequency (reference frequency} of 12.5 MHz. Therefore, ‘the nunber (N) of input pulses (at the prescaler input) WS Dittel GmbH \ FSG 60/60M counted for each counter cycle, is the sane as the desired WoO Frequency divided by 12.5 Wiz ( Hayy = 11680, Nusn, * SHO). At the start of the cycle, the number of (12.8 blz) steps which are to be counted in the auxiTiary counter, and the nunber of (Wiz) steps which are to be counted in the main counter, aro read into the (liz and Wiz) dividers. For example, with fygg = 145.175 Miz, veo 145 x 1 -MHe steps in the main counter, 14 x 12.5-H2 steps in the aux. counter would be the result. Since the secondary counter is no longer at 0, the divider ratio of the initial-divider is set to 81 and renains so until the aux. counter has received 14 pulses. Then the initial-divider ratio ts reset to 80 and renains so ul the end of the main cycle, The main cycle is ended when ‘the main counter has also counted denn to 0. The overall divider ratio (N) 1s composed as foTlovs: 14 times = 81 34 (145-18) times = 80 0480 = 10614 = (145.175 Me /12.5) linen the wain counter is at 0, the readin procedure is start thus beginning & new cycle. If a chane) frequency with integer Wiz (zero kz) is set, the presealer is firmly locked by the : 80/81 latch switch at # 80. The Frequency of the main cycle 4s now compared in the phase detector with a crystal-derived signal of 12.5 Wz fron the reference osci Vator. Dye to the large divider radio of 9480 to 11680, VCO frequency errors lead first to increasing phase errors Which changes the phase detector output voltage. The phase detector output voltage is fed through the tuning Fitter (ow pass) to the ¥CO tuning input, closing the control Toop (see block diagran). 3.81 WA Dittel GmbH FSG 60/60M 52.2 Receiver ‘The F36 60/60M receiver section consists of a single-heterodyne receiver with four resonant circuits tuned by Varicaps. a AE amplifier with comon-base bipolar transistor, dual gate MOSFET mixer, monolithic crystal filter, autonatic gain controt (Gc) through two PIN diodes, and an automatic squelch circuit. The gain control of the input circuit is delayed and responds only at signats of more than approx. 20 u¥, when an adequate signal-to-noise ratio is insured. A wide-band, fixed-tuned antenna bandjass filter prevents interference by signals out~ side the 115 to 140-Mlz range. The antenna filter is used for the transnitter as harmonic filter. The squeTch circuit operates automatically and adipts the squeTch threshold (nomally approx. 1 pv) to whatever noise level exists. The squelch switch itself (in the audio amplifier) can be forced to close the signal path by the SQ switch (on the unit's front panel). The audio-frequency signal from the denodulator is amplified and sent to the votune contro} and then to the aulio amplifier. ‘The receiver is supplied with a stabfTized 10.0 V0C, which 15 ctvided ty an operational anplifier into 5.5 V for the RF input stage, and 4.5 V for the integrated IF anplifier The receiver input is blocked during the transmit mode by the input circuits AGC diodes. 3.81 5-3 Mz Dittel GmbH FSG 60/60M Audio faptifier The audio (AF) anplifier includes analog switches and depth of-nodulation control with a field-effect transistor (FET), a low-noise microphone amplifier, and an active 3rd- order low-pass filter to suppress audio heterodynes resulting fron the reception of two or more frequencies in a multi~ carrier systen (CLINMX installations), as well as 2 push- pull power anpiifier. Microshone amplification can be selected {Junper) to match eynanic or axplifier microphones. The circuits operate as follows: In the receive mode, the external audio input (AF-Ext.) can pass throughs the AF receiver input may pass only when © 20 3,5 VOC appears at the squelch (SQ) Tine. This mde 4s reached when the squelch is disabled by the front-pane} witch, or when signal of adequate level appears at the receiver input. In the transmit mode the microphone input can pass to the AF anplifier, ang alt other inputs are blocied. ‘The threshold of the wodulation control is contiruously variable between approx. m = 0.3 and 1.0, and recuires approx. 2 aV microphone voltage (dynanic mic.). er approx. 100 e¥ (amplifier microphone). 3.81 5.28 5.2.5 MA) Ditet GmbH YA) P86 coveom Transm tee ‘The transmitter amplifier is of wide-band dsign and consists of four stages a) buffer amplifier b) preamplifier with base modulation c) driver stage with collector modulation 4) final stage with collector modulat on The stages are coupled with wide-band LC ne:works ond ferrite transformers. The antenna filter (bindpass filter) 4s also used by the receiver. fn antenna relay switches ‘the antenna Tine between the receiver input and the transmitter output. The frequency synthesizer requires a certain anount of time to stabilize onto the transmitter Frequency after being switched from receive operation (approx. 5 to 20.ms) Since the "false" frequencies occurring during the stabiii- zation period mist not be radiated, a certain circuitry (phase Tock detector) ensures that the transait amplifier renains blocked during the Frequency synthesizer transient. period and that it is only opened when the cransmit frequency 4s fully stabilized and accurate, Only then power $s fed to the buffer amplifier. Power Supply. Voltage Regulator The FSG 60/60M uses an operating voltage of +14 Y DC. Khen operating on +27.5 V OC aircraft systens, an external voltage regulator must be comected between the aircraft systes and the FSS 60/60M to ensure +14 V operating voltage. 5.2.6 5.2.7 WA) Dittel GmbH FSG 60/60M A reverse polarity diode protects the unit agarnst incorrect polarization at the OC-Supply input. Incorrect polarization blows the 3.15-8 Tine fuse. ‘The supply voltage is fed fran the OW/OFF switch to the Tine filter which suppresses noise caning from the aircraft's electrical systen (cutoff frequency approx; 100 Hr). ‘The filtered supply voltage 1s then fed direct'y to the river and output stage of the audio anplifier. the antenna relay, the transmitter output stages through the modulation transformer, the LCD heater, and the voltage regulator which produces 10.0 V to operate a1l low-power stages of the 36 60/604. Frequency Selection The frequency is set by MHz and klz through two coding selectors. The selectors are operated by dual concentric knobs on the front panel. Frequency Display The operating Frequency is indicated by a five-digit Vquid crystal display (LCD) complying with 1cA0 stancarés. This beans that the I-Hie position is not displayed, since it would only differentiate between 0 and §. Cannel Frequencies ending in 25 or 75 kile are therefore displayed as 20 and 70 Wiz. For exemple, instead of 123.525 MHZ. 123,52 is displayed, or instead of 123,075 —= 123.07 Miz. The LCD pane] can be iNTuninated. In order to prevent the slow response characteristic of Les at ow temperatures, a thermostatically controTled heater is built in which operates at equipmont temperatures betow -10° ¢. 3.81 3.81 5.2.8 Dittel GmbH FSG 60/60M ‘Channel Frequency Henory (only with FSG 60M) In addition to the frequency selector, the FSG 60H fs ‘equipped with a channel selector with which the inforna- tion carrier which determines the operating frequency {is selected.
