Question 5 (2, 2, 1, 2, 1 mark)

a) Express the following in gradient-intercept form.

2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 12

b) Write down the gradient and y-intercept for the straight line with the equation 𝒚 = 𝟒𝒙 − 𝟑.

Gradient = y-intercept =

c) Complete the table of values below for the equation 𝑦 = 4𝑥 − 3.

𝒙 -1 0 1 2 3
𝒚 -7 1 9

The graph of 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 12 from part (a) is shown on the axes below.

d) Add the straight line for 𝑦 = 4𝑥 − 3 onto the axes.

e) Hence, or otherwise, solve the following simultaneous equations.

𝑦 = 4𝑥 − 3
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 12
Question 7 (4 marks)

Solve the following simultaneous equations using the substitution method.

𝑥 = 2𝑦 + 3
𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 9

Question 8 (1, 4 marks)

The total cost of tickets for 2 adults and 3 children to see a show was $20. The tickets for a family
group with 3 adults and 2 children cost $31.

a) If 𝑎 = the cost of one adult ticket and 𝑐= the cost of one child’s ticket, write to equations to
represent the situation above.

b) Hence, find the cost of each type of ticket. Use the elimination method to find your solution.
