I. GENERAL

1.0 Aero Mechanism Models 9150 and 9151 are altitude

encoders designed to provide digitized altitude
signals for interface with aircraft transponders.
Altitude ranges are:
9150 -·1000 ft. to 20,009 ft, ..
9151 -1000 ft. to 28,700 ft.

2.0 UNPACKING

Exercise care in unpacking the unit, Make visual

examination for damage incurred during shipment.
If damage occured, save container and contact the
shipping agency. The factory is not responsible
for shipping damage,

Do not discard the warranty card included with

Models 9150/9151. This must be filled out by the
customer and the installing agency and return~d.
within ten days from the date of purchase to vali-
date the warranty. No warranty work will be per-
formed without the card being on file at the factory.

II, EQUIPMENT LIMITATIONS

1.0 Operating temperature: ( p.e r TS O C8 8 )

Storage temperature: - ~ C to --1..1._'.'._C

III. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE-(Can be used with altimeters

TSOed to ClOb or altimeters which within the past 24
months have met the requirements of FAR91.170)

1.0 Mechanical Installation

The Models 9150/9151 can be installed in any of

three ways:
i) Quick Disconnect (Fig, 1. 1)
ii) Flat Mount (Fig, 1.2)
iii) Panel Mount (Fig, 1.3)

REMOTE ENCODERS

The quick disconnect and flat mount techniques

both require #6-32 screws appropriate to the location,
The panel mount installation requires 4 ,/16-32 x 5/8"
screws (supplied)

Position error of the digitizer (approx. 10 ft, at

sea level) is small enough to be ignored but if the
unit is to be mounted with the heat sink either UP
or DOWN it would be desirable to calibrate it in
THAT position. All other mounting positions are
immune to gravitational forces,

2.0 Electrical Installation

2,1 Connector

The encoder is furnished with a prewired cable

and connector. The connector is a Molex No,
09-01-7181 edge connector. The cable wiring

Transponder interconnections are shown in

Figure 2,1 Transponders with a strobe out-
put are wired as in Fig. 2,l(a).
Transponders without a strobe are wired
as in Fig. 2,l(b)

2.3 Power

Power connections are shown in Figure 2.2 If

the transponder does not have a switched-power
output, a switch is wired as in (a). If the
installation is to use transponder-switched
power, the unit is.wired as in (b).

2.4 28volt Installations

Model 9150/9151 is designed to operate on 14

vdc. In 28 vdc aircraft, use a 28v-to-14v.
converter (Aero Mechanism Model #4076,)

3,0 Static System Installation

The static port input on the encoder is a female

1/8" NPT pipe thread fi.tting, Lubricate male threads
with thread compound before installing the f~tting.
Use as short a line as possible to connect the encoder
to the same .static line as the altimeter, and make the
"Tee" connection to the existing static line as close
as possible to the altimeter,

if the altimeter normally used to maintain

flight altitude corresponds with the out-
put of the encoder within± 125 feet at
each test point, To ensure this match,
Model 9150/9151 is provided with 16
adjusting pots to allow the encoded out-
put ot be adjusted to match the. flight

4.1,3 Procedure (PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND

BEFORE PROCEEDING)

1) MODELS 9150 and 9151 ARE SHIPPED

FROM THE FACOTRY CALIBRATED TO NOMINAL
PRESSURE, The altimeter in the aircraft
may not be nominal and therefore adjust-
ment of the Models 9150/9151 may be
required to match it, Be very careful
to turn the correct potentiometer for
each adjustment as it is possible to
turn the potentiometer so far out of
adjustment that Models 9150/9151 output
is no longer stable, This will be
obvious since the output will wander.
If this happens, contact the factory
for instructions,

2) Turning the potentiometers clockwise

increases the encoder output, Conversely
turning counterclockwise decreases the
output,

3) Since the potentiometers have back-

lash, it is suggested that the encoder
be set about 100 ft. high. Then approach
the proper setting slowly, pausing
several seconds after each correction,

4) After each adjustment, wait several

seconds for the unit to stablize,

5) The approximate change in encoder

altitude output per turn of the
potentiometers is as follows:

SEA LEVEL 1,500 ft.

25,000 ft, 3,200 ft.

6) A leaky static system will make

calibration difficult if not impossible,

7) Models 9150/9151 need not be finally

calibrated above the maximum oper-
ating altitude of the airplane in
which permanently installed,

The calibration set-up is shown in

Figure 4,1, The pitot-static test
set should be connected according
to the manufacturer's instructions.

Proceed as follows:

a) Set up the equipment as shown in

Figure 4,1,
b) Connect the encoder output
lines Al, A2, A4, Bl, B2, B4, Cl,
C2, C4 to the appropriate inputs
of a digital altitude readout.
Ground the strobe-in line,
c) Connect Models 9150/9151 power
and ground to a 14 vdc power
supply, Turn on supply,
d) Wait approximately 15 minutes.
e) Adjust the pitot-static tester
until the primary altimeter
reads -950 ft, (NOTE: Mechan-
ical altimeter pointers are not
totally frictionless,

until the readout displays-1000

-1000/-900 foot transition just
takes place.

The encoder need not be cali-

brated for altitudes higher than
the maximum operating altitude of
the aircraft, If that altitude
is other than as shown on the
factory nameplate, the Model
9150/9151 should be marked to
show the maximum calibrated
altitude,

4.1,4 Placarding

The altimeter used for flight reference

and Model 9150/9151 shall be placarded
, with the following information (placard
included with installation kit):

"Replacement or re-calibration of the

altimeter used for flight reference
requires re-calibration of Model 9150/
9151 Altitude Encoder,''

4,2 Correspondence

A correspondence test should be performed to

determine if the installation passes the corres-
pondence requiremant of AC #43-6 which requires
that the altimeter ~sed to maintain flight
altitude and the output of the remote altiiude
digitizer correspond within 125'. This may be
accomplished as fJllows:

1) Set the altimeter normally used to maintain

flight altitude to 29,92 inches of mercury
(1013.2 millibars),

2) Select the test points called out in Table I

between zero (sea level) and the maximum
operating altitude of the aircraft, Test
each of these test points for increasing
2ltitude and for decreasing altitude.

3) Apply pressure to the static system, If

separate static systems serve altimeter
and digitizer, apply identical pressures
simultaceously to each. Approach each
test point slowly, until a transition to
the tesl point valu~ occurs in the digital
output. Record the pilot's altimeter
reading at the instant of transition in
the digitizer. (Tap the altimeter to
remove friction error,)

The displayed pressure altitude (flight

altimeter) must correspond to the digitized
(encoder) output value within t 125 feet
during the entire interval that the encoder
output remains at the test value,

4.3 Static System Leak Test (This test should be

accomplished prior to any in-aircraft performance
checks.)

This test is performed to see if there is a leak

in the static systems to the altimeter and Model
9150/9151. Apply a vacuum to the static system
until the altimeter indicates approximately
18,000 feet (be sure to lightly tap the altimeter
to remove friction). Seal off the system from
the vacuum source. The pointer should not move
more than 10 0 ft. in one minute .

4,4 Systems Test

After Model 9150/9151 has been connected to the

transponder, perform a system test to ensure
proper function of the interface. Connect the
Pitot-Static Test set as in Figure 4.1. Set up
a transponder ramp tester in Mode "C". Turn
on master switch and apply power to Model
9150/9151 and transponder. Wait 15 minutes and
verify bit patterns shown in Table 4.4.1
