Name: _____________________________________________________ Score: ________

Instructions:
1. This is an examination! A test of your knowledge in this subject. Pass this on or
before December 04, 2022, at 1:00pm. Failure to submit upon the given period will
automatically have a score of zero for this exam.
2. Write your solution clearly on the front page only. Provide all the necessary
information (including units) and attach this questionnaire in front of your
paper.

1. A large rotating machine causes the floor of a factory to oscillate sinusoidally. A

punch press is to be mounted on the same floor. The displacement of the floor at the
point where the punch press is to be mounted is measured to be y(t) = 0.1sin(ωt) cm.
Using the base support model of this section, calculate the maximum force transmitted
to the punch press at resonance if the machine is mounted on a rubber fitting of
stiffness, k = 40,000 N/m, c = 900 N • s/m, and m = 3000kg.

2. Consider a machine with rotating unbalance. At resonance the maximum deflection is

measured to be 0.1 m. From a free decay of the system, the damping ratio is estimated
to be 0.05.From manufacturing data, the out-of-balance mass is estimated to be 10%.
Estimate the radius e and hence the approximate location of the unbalanced mass. Also
determine how much mass should be added (uniformly) to the system to reduce the
deflection at resonance to 0.01 m.

3. A 10 kg computer system, used for data acquisition and data reduction in a

laboratory, is placed on a table which is bolted to the floor. Due to operation of
rotating equipment, the floor has a vibration amplitude of 0.2 mm at a frequency of 30
Hz.
a. If the table is modeled as a spring of stiffness 1.3 x 106 N/m with a damping
ratio of 0.04, what is the steady-state acceleration amplitude of the computer?
b. If the table of Practice Problem 3.30 is assumed to be rigid, what is the
maximum stiffness of an undamped isolator placed between the computer and the table
such that the steady-state amplitude of the computer is less than 6 m/s2?

4. Determine the maximum frequency and amplitude ratio of a mechanical system under
2
r
frequency-squared excitation. (Use Λ = )
√( 1-r 2 ) + ( 2ζr )2
2

5. Determine the maximum frequency and amplitude ratio of a damped mechanical system
1
that undergoes harmonic excitation. (Use M = )
√( 1-r ) + ( 2ζr )
2 2 2

6. Compute a value of the damping coefficient c such that the steady-state response
amplitude of the system in the figure below is 10 mm.
7. A 100 kg machine is attached to a spring of stiffness 2 x 105 N/m and is subject to
a harmonic excitation of magnitude 700 N and period 0.1 s. What is the machine's
amplitude of forced vibration?

8. An automobile is driving over a road. The road is modeled as a base motion

displacement of y(t) = 0.01sin(5.818t) m. The suspension provides an equivalent
stiffness of k = 4 x 105 N/m, a damping coefficient of c = 40 x 103 kg/s, and a mass of
1007 kg. Determine the amplitude of the absolute displacement of the automobile mass.

9. A 65 kg electric motor is placed at the end of a 1.3 m steel (E = 210 x 109 N/m2)
cantilever beam of cross-sectional moment of inertia 1.3 x 10 -6 m4. When the motor
operates at 200 r/min, the phase difference between the operation of the motor and the
response of the beam is 5°. Assuming viscous damping, estimate the damping ratio of the
beam.

10. A 400 kg tumbler with 0.45 kg-m rotating unbalance operates at speeds between 400
and 600 r/min. If the tumbler is placed on an elastic foundation of stiffness 1 x 10 6
N/m and damping ratio 0.1, what is the maximum steady-state amplitude of the tumbler
over its operating range?
