Question
A 300mm wide strip, 25 mm thick, is fed through a rolling mill with two powered rolls each
of radius 250 mm. The work thickness is to be reduced to 22 mm in one pass at a roll speed
of 50 rev/min. the work material has a flow curve defined by K = 275 MPa and n = 0.15, and
the coefficient of friction between the rolls and the work is 0.12. determine if the friction is
sufficient to permit the rolling operation to be accomplished. If so, calculate the roll force and
horsepower (or rolling power)

Solution
Rolling force, F=Y f WL

Kεn
Average Flow Stress, Y f =
1+ n
Draft, d=25−22=3 mm

Draft maximum, d max =μ2 R

2
¿ ( O.12 ) ( 250 )
¿ 3.6 mm
⸫ The friction is sufficient to carry out the rolling operation.

True Strain, ε =ln () to

¿ ln ( 2522 )
=0.1278

275 ×106 ×0.12780.15

Average Flow Stress, Y f =
1+ 0.15
=175.636MPa
Contact length, l= √250(25−22)
=27.4mm

Rolling force, F=175.636(300)(27.4)(10−1)

=1444786N
Power, P= (2 πN ) Fl
( 2× π ×50 ) 144786 ×0.0274
