ABSTRACT

This phenomenological study explored on the standpoints of English

teachers on drop everything read (DEAR) program in one of the secondary
schools in Tagum City division. This study is anchored with cognitive theory
and Chomsky’s ideas that views reading as an inherent ability which can be
developed by exposure in meaningful situations. This qualitative study
employed phenomenological method. The data were gathered through in-
depth interview (IDI) and focus-group discussion (FGD). The result of this
study showed that public secondary English teachers facilitating DEAR
program to junior and senior high school on their standpoints of the DEAR
program: helpful in addressing reading needs of the students; enhances
reading ability and comprehension of students; and how the program is
effective. In addition, the lived experiences of English teachers on DEAR
program such as the difficulty in preparing reading materials; and motivate
students to read, lack of time in preparing reading materials; monitoring
and assessing students’ progress, improvement on reading abilities of
students. Along these problems are coping mechanisms in the challenges
encountered on the implementation of DEAR program such as the technical
assistance; having self-motivation, develop ability to adjust; utilizing
available reading materials. Moreover, the following are the insights of
English teachers on the implementation of DEAR program: inculcate love of
reading to students; provide appropriate reading materials; engage teachers
in seminars and trainings; make proper planning; follow and implement the
program religiously. Furthermore, it is suggested that the future
researchers may also conduct a study about the standpoints of public
secondary English teachers in consonance to other issues regarding reading
programs in public secondary schools.
