Unit 5-a Men and Food Problems

RATIO
A ratio is a comparison of two quantities having same units. It is a relation that one quantity
bears to another quantity with respect to magnitude. In other words, ratio means what part of one
quantity is of the other.
a
If a and b are two numbers, the ratio of a to b is or a  b and is denoted by a : b . The two
b
quantities that are being compared are called terms.
Example-1:
In a class of CSS at LCA there are 20 boys and 30 girls. The ratio between the number of boys to
20 2
number of girls can be expressed as 20:30 or 2:3. The same ratio can also be written as or
30 3
Remember That
Saying that the ratio of boys to girls is 2:3 does not mean Remember That
2 A ratio does not change if both of its terms are
that of the class students are boys. It means that, for
3 multiplied or divided by the same number.
each five students of the class there are three girls and two
2 4 6
2 3 Thus,  
boys. Boys therefore makeup of the class and girls of 3 6 9
5 5
class.

Remember That
A ratio is changed when we add or subtract the same numbers in its
terms for example, if the ratio of boys to girls is 2:3, adding 2 in
each term the ratio becomes 4:5. Similarly subtracting 1 from the

1 2 4 1
above ratio it becomes  1 : 2 . Thus,  
2 3 5 2

KEY FACT
If the two quantities are in the ratio a:b and we want to find the percentage of each
a b
quantity, then percentage of a =  100% and percentage of b =  100%
ab ab

Unit 5-a Men and Food Problems

If the ratio of boys to girls is 2 : 3 , then

2
Boys percentage  100%  40% and
 2  3

3
Girl’s percentage  100%  60%
 2  3

KEY FACT:
If two numbers are in the ratio a:b then, for some number x , the first number is ax and the
second number is bx. If the ratio is in lowest form, and if quantities are integers, then x is also
an integer.
Example-3:
If the ratio of boys to girls at LCA school picnic is 5:3, which of the following cannot be the
number of children at picnic?
(a) 24 (b) 40 (c) 96 (d) 150
Solution:
B:G = 5:3 if 5x and 3x are the number of boys and the number of girls respectively, then the
number of children present are 5x  3x  8x . Therefore number of children must be multiple of
8. Only 150 (d) is not multiple of 8.
RATE:
Rate is the ratio comparison of two different things so as to check one quantity as per unit of
other quantity.
Example-4:
If one can buy 12 eggs for Rs. 36 then rate per egg will be?
Solution:
Total price 36
Rate per egg   3
Number of items 12
Continued Ratio:
Sometimes ratio between three quantities is given in the form of a : b and b : c then the ratio
a : b : c is called continued ratio.
Example-5:
If a : b  2:5 and b : c  10 : 3 , then a:b:c = ?

or
Inverse Ratio or Reciprocal Ratio:
If the terms of the given ratio interchange their places, the new ratio is called the inverse ratio of
1 1
the first. Thus if a : b be the given ratio, then : or b : a is inverse ratio of a : b
a b
Compound Ratio:
The ratio of the product of the terms of two or more given ratio is called the compound ratio thus
if a : b and c : d are two given ratios, then ac : bd is the compound ratio of the given ratio.
For Example:
3 4 5 34 5 3
, and be the given ratios, then their compound ratio is , that is
4 5 7 4 57 7
Proportion:
The equality of two ratios is called proportion.
a c
If  , then a , b, c and d are said to be in proportion and we can write
b d
a : b :: c : d
 ad  bc
ad is called product of extremes and bc is called product of means a , b, c and d are
respectively the first, second, third and fourth proportional.
Fourth Proportional
If a : b :: c : x , x is called the fourth proportional of a , b and c .
Example-6:
Find the fourth proportional to 3,7 and 9.
Solution:
Let x be the required fourth proportional, then
3 9
3: 7 :: 9 : x or   3x  63  x  21
7 x
Third Proportional:
If a : b :: b : x then x is called the third proportional of a , b .

Solution:
Let x be the required third proportional, then
16 2 1
16 : 2 :: 2 : x or   16 x  4  x 
2 x 4
Mean Proportional:
If a : x :: x : b , x is called the mean proportional of a , b
Example-8:
Find the mean proportional between 5 and 45.
Solution:
Let x be the required mean proportional, then
5 x
5: x :: x : 45 or x  45  x  225  x  15
2

Direct Proportion:
Proportion between two quantities such that if one quantity increases other also increases or if
one quantity decreases other also decreases is called direct proportion.
Example-9:
35kg of spinach costs Rs: 28. How many kg’s of spinach can be bought for Rs:16
Solution.

Inverse Proportion:
Proportion between two quantities such that if one of them increases other one decreases is
called inverse proportion.

Eight men can do a work in two days. Four men can complete the same job in how many days?
Solution:

Compound Proportion:
The proportion between more than two quantities is called compound proportion.
