on reading your question paper.
 The time given at the head of the question paper is the time allowed for 
writing the answers.

(d) State your observation in each of the following cases. [5] 

i.  Ammonia gas is burnt in an atmosphere of oxygen in the absence of a 


catalyst.  

ii. Barium chloride solution is mixed with sodium sulphate solution.   

iii. Dilute hydrochloric acid is added to calcium bicarbonate.  

iv.  Molten lead bromide is electrolysed.  

v. A moist starch iodide paper is held at the mouth of a test tube evolving 
Chlorine gas.  
 
(e) Give a suitable chemical term for each of the following:  [5] 
i. The energy released when an electron is added to a neutral gaseous 
isolated atom to form a negatively charged ion.  
ii. The chemical bond formed by a shared pair of electrons, each bonding 
atom contributing one electron to the pair.  
iii. A non-volatile acid that has dehydrating property.   
iv.  The property of ammonia which helps it to react with copper oxide.  
v A series of compounds having similar structure and chemical properties 
in which the successive compounds differ by a CH2 group.

i. Alkali metals are strong reducing agents.   


ii. Acetic acid does not form an acid salt but forms a normal salt.  

iii. The blue colour of aqueous copper(II)Sulphate solution does not change 
when it is electrolysed using copper electrodes.   

iv. Funnel arrangement is used in the laboratory preparation of hydrochloric 


acid.   

v. Conductivity of hydrochloric acid is greater than that of formic acid.

(h)  i. Calculate the molecular formula of the compound having C = 26.59%, H= 
2.22%, O = 71.19%. Its vapour density is 45. ( H = 1, C = 12, O =16) [4]

(a) The following questions relate to the extraction of aluminium. [3]  

i. Which solution is used to react with bauxite as a first step in obtaining 


pure aluminium oxide? 

ii. Aluminium oxide for the electrolytic extraction of aluminium is obtained 


by heating aluminium hydroxide. Write a chemical equation for this reaction. 

iii. Why is it necessary to renew the anode periodically?   

(b) Dilute sulphuric acid is poured on sodium sulphide. Effervescence takes place 
and a gas X evolves.    [3] 

i. What is the odour of the gas ‘X’?

whether it is dilute or concentrated.  [3]
