(After “Ex-Friends”) Part Four is written from perspective. He begins by explaining why he did not want to help when Mr. Tushman first called his mom. Jack remembers being shocked when he first saw August’s face when he was out in the neighborhood when he was five or six years old. He was so shocked when he looked at August’s face that he thought August must have been wearing a . Jack and Jamie saw August a few more times in the neighborhood after that and Jamie admitted how once he ran away screaming from August. So after realizing how a nice boy like Jamie was to August, Jack realized how difficult middle school is going to be for August and agreed to help. Once Jack starts hanging out with August, he realizes what a nice, funny person he is. Jack said it took him about a to get used to looking at August’s face. Jack is also very impressed with how August is. He thought since August had been homeschooled that he would be really behind, but that’s not the case. But overall, he appreciates how easy it is to to August and how much he enjoys hanging out with him. This makes Jack even more upset that August is no longer talking to him and he has no idea why. Even though he gets to spend more time with the popular kids, Jack really hanging out with August.
(After “Partners”) Jack is excited to see lots of on the ground right before Thanksgiving break. He goes on Skeleton Hill with his dad and brother. He is excited to see an old sled there. Jack takes this sled home, fixes it up, then returns to Skeleton Hill and sleds down it all day. When he returns to school, he would love to tell August about his sled, which he named Lightning, but August is still not to Jack. Jack’s desire to hang around August and not the popular group is confirmed when Julian says that Skeleton Hill is . Then Miles says that he left an old “piece of ” sled near Skeleton Hill and laughs that someone actually took it. Jack quickly leaves the conversation when he realizes that he is the one who took the sled that they are all making fun of. Jack finally realizes why August is mad at him when Ms. Rubin introduces their next science-fair project. Jack is dreading the project, which leads him to think of ghost faces, which then causes him to realize what Summer meant by “Bleeding Scream.” Jack is unable to on anything else the teacher says for the rest of class because he remembers what he said about August on Halloween. After class, Julian tells Jack he should switch partners and not “be friends with that freak.” Then Jack punches Julian right in the mouth.
(After “The War”) Jack is sent to Mr. Tushman’s office after he punches Julian. Mr. Tushman tells Jack that normally a student who punches someone is automatically . But Mr. Tushman knows Jack is a really good student and has done anything like this before. So even though Jack does not tell Mr. Tushman why he hit Julian, he chooses simply to suspend Jack until winter break and have him write apology letters. When Jack gets home, he tells his mom about how Julian’s mom Photoshopped August’s out of the class picture, then tells her all about why he punched Julian. As Jack is sending apology letters to Mr. Tushman and Jack, we see an email from Julian’s , who tells Mr. Tushman that she has big concerns about August being at Beecher Prep. She feels that it is too much to have asked Julian and Jack to be friends with him, saying that Jack punched Julian because he “ under the pressure” of being friends with August. Meanwhile, Jack to August for the horrible things he said and they agree to be friends again. Unfortunately, when they return to school after winter break, very few of the other boys talk to Jack. Charlotte tells Jack that it’s because Julian told all the boys not to talk to him. Julian hopes this will help Jack realize why he should not be friends with August.
