What is Cell Membrane ?
The cell membrane is a thin, flexible
outermost covering of the cell that
surrounds the cell. It separates the inside
of the cell from the outside environment
and permits what enters and exits the
cell. It is present both in prokaryotic and
eukaryotic cells. The cell membrane is
made of different types of molecules,
including phospholipids, proteins, and
carbohydrates. The cell membrane
allows or permits the entry and exit of
some substances in and out of the cell. It
also prevents movement of some other
substances. The cell membrane,
therefore, is called a selectively
permeable membrane.
Structure of Cell
Membrane
 It is a bilayer [Two Layers]

 Made up of lipids , proteins ,

carbohydrates

 The lipids are arranged within the

membrane with the Polar Head of
Hydrophilic region towards the
outer side and the Hydrophobic
Tails towards the inner part.

 This creates a barrier that separates

the cell's interior from the external
environment.
Phospholipids

Phospholipids consist of -

 Hydrophilic [Water-Loving] Polar

Head.

 Hydrophobic [Water-Fearing] Tails.

Types of Proteins In Cell Membrane
The cell membrane is composed of two types of
proteins –

1. Extrinsic/Peripheral Proteins:
Extrinsic proteins are located on the surface
of the cell membrane.

2. Intrinsic/Integral Proteins:
Intrinsic proteins are embedded within the
cell membrane and span across its entire
width.
Functions of Cell Membrane

The cell membrane, also known as the plasma membrane, performs a variety
of important functions in a cell. -

 One of its primary roles is to act as a barrier, separating the inside of

the cell from the outside environment

 Providing support and maintaining the shape of the cell.

 The cell membrane also plays an important role in cell signalling and
communication.

 Exchange of substances through the cell membrane
