In the class discussion about deep conceptual learning, the discussant explain
the difference between DCL and suface learning. Deep conceptual learning focusses in
thinking, discussing and understanding certain knowledge rather than to only memorize.
It suggest that science subject must learn by deep conceptual learning appoach rather
other words must possess the ability to have deep conceptual learning about science.
What educators have experienced, know, and believe are of great importance for the
According to the results of many studies, there are many benefits of DCL. These
are the top result of the benefits answered by the teachers and adminitrators: more
prepared/successful in school, college and job life, better problem solvers, make
connections/apply knowledge, lifelong learners and others. The question here is “ Are
we implementing deep conceptual learning in our schools?”. I myself don’t have enough
knowledge about DCL but because of the topic presented by the previous group I
learned a lot.
I acquired knowledge about how to implement the methods of DCL. There are
many methods that this study suggest. These includes the students must apply the
copcepts to everyday life, the teacher must use problem based learning, discovery
some lesson consume large amount of time to be successful in applying this approach.
We have a curriculum to follow and it has a time frame. Another challenge is the
behavior of the students towards learning. In the Philippine setup, I think this is the most
challenging in applying DCL because many students are not motivated in learning.
Strong positive attitudes toward the importance and benefits of DCL will make a
difference in science and math education. We must focus on a deep concept learning
rather than surface learning. Professional development programs to help teachers and
administrators recognize effective tools and methods for DCL need to be delivered. With
these, the quality of math and science education in the Philippines will be globally
competitive.
