Context

` Trial conducted at Sri Ramadhoota, a Poultry Research farm in India in 2018

Objective
` To compare the effectiveness of OH-Methionine (OH-Met) compared to DL-Methionine (DL-Met) in laying
performance and egg quality of Babcock laying hens on a 14-week period in a tropical climate

Animal & experimental diets

` 448 Babcock layers
` Reared from 17 to 31 weeks
` Dietary treatments:
- Basal diet with mainly corn, soybean meal and limestone
- Two dietary treatments at TSAA (Total Sulfur Amino Acids) requirement, supplemented either
with DL-Methionine or OH-Methionine (in powder form) at incorporation rates of 0.14% and 0.16%
respectively

Results
Same laying performance with DL-Met and OH-Met
No significant differences in body weight, feed intake and Feed Conversion Ratio between treatments were
observed, indicating similar effects of DL-Met and OH-Met on these parameters (Table 1).

However, a numerical advantage for OH-Met was observed in egg production from week 21 to week 31;
egg weight from week 26 to week 31 and egg mass from week 21 to week 25.
Any strategy that could increase the value of eggs and potentially allow producers
to keep flocks for longer; would improve their bottom line.

Same egg quality with DL-Met and OH-Met:
There is no significant difference between the two groups receiving diets with DL-Methionine and
OH-Methionine across all egg quality parameters during the full 14 weeks of the trial period.

Overall, this study shows that OH-Methionine is 100% efficient and that DL-Met and OH-Methionine sustain
laying performance equally well in tropical climates.
