1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 General information about the User Manual

Thank you for purchasing and giving preference to a National Oilwell Varco product.

This User Manual (USM) is based on the NS 5820 Supplier’s Documentation of

Equipment standard. The USM contains the required information for safe operation and
maintenance of the equipment. Efforts have been made to keep the manual brief and
well arranged, keeping the user’s needs in mind at all times.

The manual is composed of a number of independent but interconnected documents,

and thereby prepared for easy updating. The different documents making up the manual
are listed in the User Manual Table of Contents. The Table of Contents can be found at
the front of each volume.

The USM may not contain information on modifications performed by other parties or
the shipyard or As Built information, unless this was originally part of the Purchase
Order for the equipment.

1.2 Storage and retrieval of manufacturing records

The Manufacturing Records (for example Calculations, Certificates, Factory Acceptance

Test Report, Functional Descriptions, Indexes etc.) will be stored and guaranteed by
NOV for a period of ten (10) years. These records can be available upon request.

NOV store the manufacturing records electronically within their designated database
and access to the Manufacturing Records will, for security reasons, be restricted to only
include NOV’s documentation personnel and authorised Client personnel.

The following procedure should be followed by Client personnel when requesting

access to the Manufacturing Records:

A request must be emailed/faxed to NOV (refer to section 3 for Supplier details), a

minimum of two working days in advance of the intended visit and should include the
following details:

• Reason for action, i.e. visit/study within NOV premises, or temporary withdrawal (pick-
up) of documents
• Date and time of intended visit/pick-up of documents
• Name(s) of visitor(s) or courier
• Name of responsible person (reviewer) in the Client’s organization if the documentation
is removed from premises
• Contract number(s), package number(s), tag number(s), document number(s) or other
relevant information to aid retrieval preparation

1.3 Restrictions in guarantee

NOV’s guarantee and warranty is forfeited if the equipment is improperly handled,

installed or operated. This is also applicable for unauthorised repair, modifications or
maintenance performed by the Client or by sub-contractors to the Client. Only qualified
personnel, given the necessary training and skills to perform their tasks, shall conduct
operation and repair.

The equipment must be used only for the task it has explicitly been designated for. Any
other form of usage is to be considered as inappropriate and therefore dangerous.

The manufacturer declines all responsibility in the event of damage caused by improper,
incorrect or illogical use of the equipment.

1.4 Quality Assurance System

In order to ensure a high, repetitive quality of work, NOV has chosen to work according
to ISO 9001.
