Issue No 01
Analysis of Ash % in Charcoal Issue Date : Aprril 2023
Rev .No 00
Rev.Date

1.0 Parameter to be tested: Ash %

2.0 Applicable Materials: Stick Charcoal, Charcoal Churi, Charcoal Fine

3.0 Method of Sampling:

Use Oven-dried material passing through 212-micron IS sieve

4.0 Apparatus Required

4.1 Porcelain crucible with 50 ml capacity and have to keep 3 to 5 g of powdered sample
4.2 Muffle Furnace – 700°C to 800 °C
4.4 Desiccant: Fresh or freshly regenerated and self-indicating silica gel.

5.0 Procedure

1. Weigh empty crucible (M1) and weigh sample accurately into 3·00 to 3·01 g of sample (M2).
2. Spread the sample in crucible uniformly.
3. Place the crucible in Muffle Furnace at the temperature of 750 ± 10°C for 6 hours
4. Remove crucible from the furnace, cool the crucible in first on metal plate for 5 minutes and
then in a desiccator for 10 minutes.
5. If the charcoal does not burn away completely apply several drops of hydrogen peroxide (3%
solution) and re-heat the crucible in the muffle furnace.

6.0 Calculation and Reporting of Results

Calculate the Ash of the sample on 'Oven dried ' basis as follows:

Percent Ash = 100 (M2-M3)

(M2-M1)

M1 = Mass in g of empty silica dish;

M2 = Mass in g of dish and sample before heating
M3 = Mass in g of dish and sample after heating.
