TITLE OF THE PROJECT PARKING SLOT AVAILABILITY TRACKER USING IOT

PROJECT TIMELINE Jun-Aug 2023

(Tentative Start and End
Date)

FIELD OF PROJECT SMART CITIES AND URBAN TRANSPORTATION

OBJECTIVE OF THE The objective of a smart parking system is to create a more

PROJECT efficient, user-friendly, and sustainable parking ecosystem
that benefits drivers, parking operators, municipalities, and
the overall urban environment.

PROBLEM STATEMENT Traffic congestion caused by vehicle is an alarming problem

at a global scale and it has been growing exponentially. Car
parking problem is a major contributor and has been, still a
major problem with increasing vehicle size in the luxurious
segment and confined parking spaces in urban cities.
Searching for a parking space is a routine (and often
frustrating) activity for many people in cities around the
world. This search burns about one million barrels of the
world’s oil every day. As the global population continues to
urbanize, without a well-planned, convenience-driven
retreat from the car these problems will worsen.

INTENDED Drivers, local businesses, municipalities and city authorities,

BENEFICIARIES OF THE environment and sustainability, parking operators and
PROJECT urban planners will be largely benefited by the goals of this
system.

BACKGROUND OF PROJECT WITH REGARD TO THE DRAWBACK ASSOCIATED WITH

EXISTING PROJECT: While a website can provide information about parking spaces, it may
not always reflect real-time availability. The information on the website could be outdated
or delayed, leading to users encountering occupied parking spaces even if the website
indicated availability. By utilizing sensors in your smart parking app, you can provide users
with real-time and accurate information about parking space availability.

ABSTRACT: This project focuses on developing a parking app that leverages infrared (IR)
sensors to detect the availability of parking slots. The app aims to address the common
issue of finding parking spaces efficiently by providing users with real-time information on
available spots. By integrating IR sensors into the parking infrastructure, the app can
accurately monitor the occupancy status of each parking slot. The app processes the sensor
data to distinguish between occupied and vacant parking spaces. The mobile app offers an
intuitive interface for users to search for parking spaces, view a map displaying availability,
and reserve spots. This project presents an innovative solution that improves convenience
for drivers and contributes to efficient parking management.

PROJECT METHODOLOGY: The methodology for creating a smart parking app that can
detect available parking spaces involves the following steps. Firstly, the app needs to
integrate infra-red (IR) sensors into the parking infrastructure. These sensors will be
strategically placed to monitor individual parking slots and detect the presence or absence
of vehicles. The next step is to process the sensor data in real-time. This involves designing
and implementing algorithms that analyze the IR sensor readings and determine the
occupancy status of each parking slot. The algorithms may utilize machine learning or
threshold-based approaches to differentiate between occupied and vacant spaces. The app
will continuously update the parking availability information based on the sensor data,
ensuring real-time accuracy. Additionally, the app should provide a user-friendly interface
that allows users to search for parking spaces, view the availability status, and navigate to
the desired parking location. Finally, it is crucial to thoroughly test the app's functionality
and performance, making any necessary adjustments or improvements before deployment.
