Research What a researcher thinks needs to be studied within the

problem problem situation

Problem Specific description of what intrigues a researcher. Generally

statement speaking, it includes briefly what it is already known about the
problem situation and that establishes the context from which
the research problem emerges, what is unknown and deserves
to be studied – the research problem-and why it is important to
know about that problem

RESEARCH PROBLEM

 The most difficult aspect of research is formulating a

clear, concise, & manageable research problem.
 Formulating the research problem is, in itself, a BIG
PROBLEM.

 It establishes the importance of the topic.

 It creates reader interest.
 It focuses the reader’s attention on how the study will
add to the literature (contribute to the body of
knowledge).
 A research problem helps you formulate that sequence.

Justifying the Importance of the Research Problem

 Justification based on what other researchers have found

(literature review)
 Justification based on personal or workplace experiences
 Justification based on the experiences that others have
had in the workplace
