What I Need to Know

Hello there! Did you know that operating a sewing machine has a step by step
process that should be followed? Sometimes operating a sewing machine carelessly
can result to accidents. So in this lesson you’re going to learn how to properly operate
the sewing machine while keeping yourself away from accidents as well.
After going through this module, you are expected to:

 Observe proper handing and cleaning of the machine

 Resolve common machine troubles
 Follow the safety procedures in machine cleaning

1
What I Know

Before you proceed, let us check your prior knowledge. Read each item carefully
and choose the letter of the best answer from the choices below.

_____1. When the sewing machine runs noisily, what could be the possible reason?
a. insufficient oil
b. Belt is too tight
c. Stitch regulator not calibrated properly
d. bent needle, dull needle or wrongly attached needle

Lesson

5 The Sewing Machine

A sewing machine is must equipment in dressmaking/tailoring. There are times

that the machine will malfunction, and specific actions must be done to solve the
problem. If you’re curious, you have just turned in to the right page.

What’s In

Since we have discussed the parts of sewing machine in the previous lesson
already, can you tell me which part of the sewing machine do we put the spool of thread
into?

4
What’s New

I hope you are curious about the activities we will discuss in this module.
Direction: Read and study the situation carefully. Then answer the question based on
the situation given.

Caroline Lim is trying out her sewing machine again after months of not
using it. She noticed that the machine is making a lot of sounds than it used
to be. Help her to find out what could cause the problem.

What do you think could cause the problem? Just give 1 probable cause and
solution.

CAUSE SOLUTION

What Is It

THREADING THE MACHINE

All parts of the threading mechanism have their purpose. The thread must
undergo different sewing machine parts in an orderly manner so that the machine will
sew accurately

ORDER OF THREADING IN THE UPPER PART

5. Lower thread guide

6. Needle
STEPS:

1. Locate spool pin and place your spool of thread

2. Look for the thread guide and bring your thread into it.
3. Locate the tension and pull the thread between the metal discs of the tension.

4. Look for the thread take-up lever and raise it as it goes.

5. Pull the thread down to the thread guide.

6. Thread the needle

THREADING THE LOWER PART OF SEWING MACHINE

1. Remove the bobbin case by pulling on the bobbin case latch.
2. Remove the bobbin from the case and wind the thread.
3. Put the bobbin back to the bobbin case and pull the thread through the little slot at
least 4 inches.
4. Start the mechanism by rolling the balance wheel forward to get the thread of the
bobbin through the needle.
5. Pull the upper and lower thread together by 4 inches.

HOW TO CLEAN AND LUBRICATE THE SEWING MACHINE
Just like any other machine, the sewing machine also needs a tender, love, and
care from its owners. If you want your sewing machine to last for a very long time
cleaning and lubricating it is a must. If you keep doing this, surely your sewing
machine will serve you well in the long run.

UPPER TENSION BOLT

 Remove the outer bolt, tension dial, discs, and disc spring.
 Lay each part accordingly on how you disassemble it for easier assembling after
cleaning
 Each part should be dust off and wipe it using a cloth with oil.
 Assemble it accordingly on how you disassemble it

LOWER MECHANISM

 Remove the bobbin case.

 Fasten sides of the oscillating hook.
 Remove dust with a lint brush.
 Put a little amount of machine oil on moving parts.
 Return spare parts in the proper place.

OTHER MINOR PARTS

 Remove entangled threads between the head and balance wheel.

 Brush accumulated dust in the treadle joints connecting the band wheel.
 Clean gummy dust on the band wheel.
 After all parts were dusted, lubricate all joints, and oil slots with good quality
oil.
 Wipe off all surplus oil then put a piece of absorbent cloth under the presser
foot for dripping oil.
