0240 10 Pre-Loading/Discharging Checklist

Before loading/discharging the Officer in charge is to check the following items.

1 Cargo holds ready for loading/discharging

2 Lashing for cargo ready for use

3 Gangway ready to use

4 Trucks ready to use

5 Check that crane or hoist is not tagged with an out-

of-order sign.

6 Crane ready to use, wire/hook/block etc. checked

visually

7 Before heavy lift (25-50 tons) All tanks shall be

checked for no free surfaces. Check that the
stability is sufficient for this operation.

8 When use of deck crane during loading the cargo

must only be hooked in acc to the producer’s guide.
If this guide is not obtained, the master considers if
the loading shall take place

9 Check for any unusual sounds from the crane or

hoist mechanism while operating the crane or hoist.
Check for hydraulic oil leak.

10 Check that all persons involved in operation are

informed about the operation and know their duties.

11 Instruct shore Stevedores regarding safety aspects (Elevators, cranes, forklifts)

and limitations of cargo equipment.

12 All entrance's to cargo holds on all deck's to be

secured against falling. Physical obstacles as
bars, chains, fencing etc to be in place directly
after opening.
