WHAT WERE THE KEY FACTORS TO IMPROVE SAFETY AT
NUCOR BERKELEY?
“We will never be able to make
Established a safety culture tons if we have to do all this
Record, track and investigate every incident - no matter how small safety stuff”
Determine root cause for the incident – Personal responsibility, defective equipment, inadequate procedures
Hold TM accountable for every incident and apply the appropriate discipline response
Ensure consistency across all departments, all managers and all supervisors
Develop a JSA for each task and job performed
2021 was not only a record
Put safety before production production year but also our
safest year ever
Plant standdowns for a recordable or serious near miss
Walk the talk – demonstrate that safety is more important than production or profit
Utilize Technology
Install cameras that cover almost all activities in the plant (> 250 cameras)
Invest in automation technology and equipment to eliminate exposure to liquid steel or other potential
hazards
21
BUILDING SAFETY CHAMPIONS

Teammates accepts not only their responsibility for Safety but

for the responsibility of those around them.
Set an Example / Role Model / Demonstrate Safe Behavior
Ownership/ Personal Responsibility
Safety at Work and Safety at Home
Positive Safety Attitude with Sense of Urgency

Encourage new teammates to have the curiosity and

courage to speak up to point out safety deficiencies and
ensure that the experienced teammates have the humility to
accept the observations and suggestions

22
SUSTAINING SAFETY CHAMPIONS AND CULTURE

Focus on Prevention – Attitude / Educate

Hazard Recognition / Beyond Zero

Team Effort – Observations/ Participation

Drive Involvement and Follow Up (2021 – 54,000+)

Personal Responsibility
You must be a Safety Champion

Influence others
Safety Champions drive culture, people change to environment
23
CORE ELEMENTS OF OUR CULTURE

Safety is our #1 value; it is a core belief,

and it is also a condition of employment.
“”Safety first” guides everything we do
Nothing…Is more important than
SAFETY…NOTHING!
The “cowboy” or risk taker from the
early 2000’s no longer works for Nucor
– they disqualified themselves

Personal Responsibility
Responsible for those around me
Responsible for my area
24

Longest number of days without a recordable. 358 days (June 15, 2020 through June 7, 2021)
Largest amount of OSHA manhours without a recordable. 2.1 million manhours

Unfortunately, had 4 recordables and 2 DART cases in a 6 months period - 3 were hand injuries
Renew focus on hand safety and no-touch tools. Gloves are now required in all production areas.

IMAGE OF SCAN

Displayed in the Lmf pulpit and at the ladle wall when the scan is complete.

50
SCAN RESULTS

This scan of ladle 16 showed a thin spot (1.32”) in the slag line. The same ladle 2 heats
prior showed 3.56” in the same spot. We tapped into this ladle and immediately had a hot
spot on the outside of the ladle.
51
INFRARED CAMERA ALARMS IN PULPIT IF A RAPID RISE IS DETECTED.

..

A rapid rise alarm was received just after killing this heat. The operator must turn the
stir off and visually inspect the outside of the ladle. After visually verifying the alarm
was a hot spot this heat was re-ladled.
