READING COMPREHENSION
Passage 1
Telecommunicating is a form of computer communication between employees’ homes and offices. For
employees whose jobs involve sitting at a terminal or word processor entering data or typing reports, the location of
the computer is of no consequence. If the machine can communicate over telephone lines, when the work is
completed, employees can dial the office computer from a distant site and transmit the material to their employers. A
recent survey in USA Today estimates that there are approximately 8.7 million telecommuters. But although the
numbers are rising annually, the trend does not appear to be as significant as predicted when Business Week
published ‘The Portable Executive’ as its cover story a few years ago. Why hasn’t telecommuting become more
popular?
Clearly, change simply takes time. But in addition, there has been active resistance on the part of many
managers. These executives claim that supervising the telecommuters in a large work force scattered across the
country would be too difficult, or at least, systems for managing them are not yet developed, thereby complicating the
manager’s responsibilities.
It is also true that employees who are given the option of telecommuting are often reluctant to accept the
opportunity. Most people feel that they need regular interaction with a group, and many are worried that they will not
have the same consideration for advancement if they are not more visible in the office setting. Some people feel that
even when a space in their homes is set aside as a work area, they never really get away from the office.

Alexandre Yersin was born on Sept. 23, 1863 in Switzerland. He was a Swiss-born French bacteriologist and one of the
discoverers of the Pasteurella pestis, now called Yersinia pestis.
Yersin studied medicine at the universities of Marburg and Paris and bacteriology with Émile Roux in Paris and Robert Koch in
Berlin. In 1888 he and Roux isolated a toxin secreted by the diphtheria bacillus (bacterium) and showed that the toxin - and not
the microorganism - gives rise to the symptoms of the disease.
Yersin left Europe in 1890 to serve as a physician aboard steamships operating off the coast of Indochina and soon began his four-
year exploration of the central region. He discovered the sources of the Dong Nai River and explored the Lam Vien Plateau, where
he recommended that a town, the future Da Lat, be built. In 1892 he joined the colonial health service and was sent to Hong
Kong in 1894, where he and Kitasato Shibasaburo independently discovered the plague bacillus while studying an outbreak
of plague in China.
The next year Yersin established a laboratory at Nha Trang. There he prepared serums against plague in human beings and cattle
and studied cattle diseases, tetanus, cholera, and smallpox. To finance the laboratory, designated the Pasteur Institute of Nha
Trang in 1903, he undertook the cultivation of corn (maize), rice, and coffee and introduced the rubber tree to Indochina. In
1903–04 he founded a medical school in Hanoi but returned to Nha Trang, where he introduced (1920–23) a source of quinine. He
was named honorary director of the Pasteur Institute in Paris in 1933.

A. Recycle School Papers
It seems every day kids come home with worksheets and piles of assorted papers. After going through the work with
your kids and confirming that they no longer need to keep them, take a paper shopping bag that's too tattered to
reuse and have your child put their papers in there to recycle. You can also have a designated bin for paper. Most
town recycling takes paper, but many schools, churches and non-profits have a bin specifically for paper recycling.
B. Conserve Water
Most kids don't think twice about keeping the faucet running while brushing their teeth or playing with a hose in the
yard. Talk to your kids about what a valuable resource water is, and brainstorm ideas that your whole family can do
to help reduce your water waste. For example, try shortening your showers by setting a timer or bathing two little
ones at once in the tub. Ask your kids what other ways they can conserve their water use -- they're bound to come
up with some great ideas.
C. Make Saving Electricity a Game
Kids love a challenge, especially when you make it a fun one, and saving electricity is another way to go green while
at home. Hand out a sticker every time one of your kids turn off the lights when leaving a room, or try having a night
where you don't use any electricity. Making your kids aware that energy is used each time they flip a switch or plug
their electronic device in to be charged may make them realize how much electricity they use on a daily basis.
D. Use Cloth Instead of Paper Goods
Another easy way to teach your kids to go green is to encourage the use of cloth instead of paper whenever possible.
For example, make sure your bathroom is stocked with clean hand towels instead of paper towels. Same for wiping
up messes — having a cloth handy instead of paper goods gives kids the signal that they are preventing another
item from entering a landfill. Use cloth napkins at every meal and just toss them in with regular laundry.
