SECTION A
PHILIP'S VISIT TO THE LIBRARY
The silence of the Reference Library was broken only by an occasional
cough and now and then, by the scarcely audible sound of pages being
turned over. There were about twenty people in the room, most of them
with their heads bent over their books. The assistant librarian who was in
charge of the room, sat at a desk in one corner. She glanced at Phillip as he
came in, then went on with her work.

Phillip had not been to this part of the library before. He walked around the
room almost on tiptoe, afraid of disturbing the industrious readers with his
heavy shoes. The shelves were filled with thick volumes :dictionaries in
many languages, encyclopaedias, atlases, biographies and other works of
reference. He found nothing that was likely to interest him, until he came to
a small section on photography, which was one of his hobbies. The books in
this section were on a high shelf, out of his reach, so he had to fetch a small
ladder in order to get one down. Unfortunately, as he was climbing down the
ladder, the book he had chosen slipped from his grasp and fell to the floor
with a loud crash. Twenty pairs of eyes looked up at him simultaneously
annoyed by this unaccustomed disturbance, Phillip felt himself go red as he
picked up his book, which did not seem to have been damaged by its fall.
He had just sat down when he found the young lady assistant standing
alongside him. “You must be more careful when you are handling these
books,” she said severely. Satisfied that she had done her duty, she turned
to go back to her desk. Then a sudden thought struck her. “By the way,
how old are you ?” she asked Phillip. “Thirteen,” he told her. “You're not
allowed in here under the age of fourteen, you know,” the assistant said.
“Didn't you see the notice on the door ?” Phillip shook his head. He
expected the assistant to ask him to leave. Instead, in a more kindly tone,
she said: “Well, never mind. But make sure that you don't disturb the other
readers again, otherwise I shall have to ask you to leave.”

SECTION B
The Indian Ocean
The world's third largest ocean is the Indian Ocean. It covers an area of
about 74 million square kilometers. It lies between Africa to the west,
Indonesia and Australia to the east, and Antarctica to the south. The
ocean's northern part is divided in to two parts, the Bay of Bengal and the

Arabian sea, by two land areas – India and Sri Lanka. Pemba, Madagascar
and Sri Lanka are the major islands of the ocean. The deepest point of the
ocean has been recorded at more than 7,400 metres in the Java Trench.
Earthquakes are common near the places of long ocean ridges.
In the northern part of the Indian ocean that lies in the tropics, water
temperatures are high in some areas. The Red sea and the Persian Gulf
have high water temperatures.
Marine life is abundant in the Indian Ocean. However, the green turtles that
were found in abundance in the Indian ocean, have greatly reduced in
number because of hunting. Sea cucumbers are also found in the warm
waters of the Indian Ocean. The great white sharks are among the most
dangerous sharks, that are often found in the Indian Ocean.
Due to environmental pollution, the protection of the world's oceans and
Marine species has become a global problem. When we dump garbage and
toxic chemicals in the sea, we contribute to this process.

SECTION C
Welcome to our weekly programme "Something new". Today we ae
talking first insect restaurant.

Britain’s first insect restaurant in Wales, has just opened its doors. It’s
called Grub Kitchen and Andy Holcroft, the head chef, is confident that
diners will “love” his bugfilled dishes.
“I’ve always been really interested in trying to do something different with
food,” Holcroft said. “I want to make people think about their food.”
The awardwinning chef is a passionate supporter of entomophagy or, in

simpler words, the practice of eating insects. It is estimated that there will
be almost ten billion people in the world by the year 2050. Unless humans
change their eating habits there might not be enough food to satisfy
everybody’s food demands of the future.
At least two billion people worldwide already eat a variety of insects.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations,
about 1,900 species of insects are commonly eaten. Eating insects for
protein is increasingly popular in other EU countries such as Holland, and
Mr Holcroft believes his restaurant will be a step towards making this
apply to Wales as well.
He is always experimenting to improve his menu. “The first dish I created
was a mealworm and cricket kebab,” he said. He later developed the
restaurant’s signature bug burger – a blend of toasted crickets, mealworms
and grasshoppers, mixed with spinach, sundried tomato and seasoning.
“Kids love the edible insects – they don’t have that fear factor,” he said. “I
wouldn’t expect everyone to like them, in the same way I wouldn’t expect
everyone to like fish or mushrooms or pork.”
Mr. Holcroft says mealworms have “a pleasant texture,” while crickets
could be compared to puffed rice. Weight for weight, crickets can contain
more protein than beef and can feed humans up to 25 times more
efficiently.
There is no current UK law on how to breed insects for human
consumption. The critters served at Grub Kitchen are grown in laboratories
and imported from a variety of European companies, but Mr. Holcroft
hopes to be breeding his own supply of insects by next year. For diners
with a sweet tooth, desserts include cricket crepes with bamboo worm
fudge ice cream.
