COURSE/DEPARTMENTAL OBJECTIVES
The aim at all levels of the writing sequence is to enable students to write logical,

incorporating print and/or electronic source materials. Students will learn how to
critically read various texts and to analyze, infer, synthesize, and evaluate. They
will also learn how to cite information properly to avoid plagiarism.

COURSE CONTENT/METHODOLOGY
Students in Composition 1 will write several 5 paragraph/500 word essays. They
are introduced to the basics of paragraph/essay writing, focusing on coherence,
unity and development. They will learn to formulate a thesis and develop by
bringing in examples and explaining how/why those examples prove their point.

All essays and rewrites are written in class. Essays are based on reading
assignments and/or topics previously discussed in class. The class is run as a
writing workshop where students can ask questions about grammar or paragraph
development and organization as well as whether or not their ideas about the
topic are reasonable. There will be 5 to 6 essays per semester.

All essays, including the exit exam, are graded according to the departmental
rubic.
