I. Introduction

 The goal of a bearing is to provide relative positioning and rotational freedom

while transmitting a load between two parts, commonly a shaft and its housing.

 Rolling contact bearings (or rolling bearings) are standardized machine elements
widely used in various machines.

 They support rotating shafts while permitting relative motion between two
elements
 Bearings are designed to take radial load or thrust load or combination of both.

1.1 Structures of Rolling bearings

 A typical rolling contact bearing composes of an inner ring (race), an outer ring
(race), rolling elements and a retainer.

 The presence of rolling elements allows a low friction rotation of shaft

1.2 Types of Rolling Contact Bearings

 Rolling contact bearings can be classified either by the shape of rolling

elements or by the load a bearing carries.

Types of Radial Ball Bearings

1. Single row deep groove bearing (Fig. a).
2. Single row Angular contact bearing (Fig. b).
3. Double row Angular contact bearing (Fig. c).
4. Self-aligning ball bearing (Fig. d)..

Following are the two types of self-aligning bearings :

(a) Externally self-aligning bearing
(b) Internally self-aligning bearing

1.2 Types of Rolling Contact Bearings

 The rolling contact bearings, depending upon the load to be carried,

are classified as :
(a) Radial bearings
(b) Thrust bearings
Radial Bearings Bearings used to support the load that acts
perpendicular to the axis of shaft are called radial bearings
Thrust Bearings Bearings used to support the load that acts parallel to
the axis of shaft are called thrust bearings.

• The radial and thrust loads both may be carried simultaneously

1.2 Types of Rolling Contact Bearings

 Roller bearings are also classified by roller configuration into the four types

(1) Cylindrical
(2) Spherical
(3) Tapered
(4) Needle.

1.3 Designation of rolling contact bearings

• Rolling contact bearings are standardized products ready for immediate

installation

• Basic code indicates the type and size of bearings. It is composed of 5

digits, representing the type code, width series code, diameter series code
and bore dimension series code, respectively.

III. Selection of bearing

 Step 01: Calculate the radial and axial forces acting on the bearing

 Step 02: Select bearing type for the application

 Step 03: Determine the factor X and Y. The values depend upon two ratios
X and Y factor for single-row deep
groove ball bearing

 Step 04: Calculate the equivalent dynamic load

 Step 05: Make a decision about the expected bearing

life and express the life L10 in million revolutions

 Step 06: Check whether the selected bearing life has

the required dynamic capacity. If not, choose the next
series and go to step 3.
