Risk Assessments –
Prior to commencing of the works the site will be initially inspected by a Supervisor from Charmac – to
ascertain and make plans for programming of resources, ordering of material, any obvious issues of
Health & Safety, Environmental, Traffic Management and any likely disruption to the public.
Any issues revealed during the above visit will be brought to the attention of the Client and plans
made as necessary.
All Charmac operatives will receive our own pre-start briefing prior to works commencing.
All Charmac operatives will sign in to site and attend any site-specific briefings as required by the Main
Contractor on site.
The Charmac machine drivers will carry out a pre-start check of the plant to ensure it is in good
working order. Any significant defects will be rectified immediately. Any minor defects that do not
affect the safety or operational function of the plant will be added to the defect sheet and rectified at
the next opportunity;
The materials will be delivered to site in insulated tipping lorries with sheeted covers to keep the
material at the correct temperature. All lorries will be fitted with reversing cameras, reversing beepers
& flashing beacons.
Once on site the lorry will be directed to the work area by the designated Banksman (Identified by
Orange Hi-Vis & Red Hard Hat) via the designated traffic route.
Machine Lay
Once in the works area the Lorry will be directed to the paver by the Banksman who will check for
overhead cables and any other obstructions. When in place on the paver the lorry will discharge its
load into the paver hopper by tipping the body up.
Laying materials through the paver is achieved by materials being transferred from the hopper to the
screed at the rear of the paver by conveyors (Flight Chains). Note: Under no circumstances must any
operator enter the paver pan;
The material is spread along the screed by augers. The Screed is hydraulically controlled & also heated
to enable the operatives to lay the material to the correct thickness & Level.
Once tipping is complete, the banksman must inform the tipper driver to lower the body of the vehicle
immediately;
Hand Lay
Once in the works area the Lorry will be directed to the place of discharge by the Banksman who will
check for overhead cables and any other obstructions
The material will either be taken directly from the back of the delivery vehicle into wheel barrows, or
tipped onto a clean hard stock pile area and transferred to the point of lay either by loading shovel,
dumper or wheel barrows to the area to be laid.
Once tipping is complete, the banksman must inform the tipper driver to lower the body of the vehicle
immediately.
The material will be manually spread and then raked into a loose layer of uniform thickness to achieve
the line and level required.
Post works:
Once works are completed our gang will tidy up any mess made during the works and make sure all
the area laid is rolled and gone off.
If possible, our Foreman will walk round the site with the Site Agent to check all is satisfactory.
