CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
The SynchroTeq Plus is a controlled switching device (CSD) platform for high voltage circuit
breakers (C/Bs).
Using patented technique, the SynchroTeq Plus unit automatically adjusts C/B operations
according to the supply voltage, ambient temperature, pressure of the drive mechanism and so
on. In addition, the unit intelligently adjusts the next operation based on calculations from
previous C/B timing performance.
Starting firmware version 1.14 and up, SynchroTeq Plus supports native IEC 61850 MMS Server
protocol for substation automation and SCADA system interfacing.
The SynchroTeq Plus can be controlled locally or remotely. The unit includes a graphical web
operating interface and the Vizimax Tool Suite provides configuration and data analysis
software tools designed for the MS Windows environment.
The Vizimax Commissioning Tool (VCT) is used to customize the operation of the SynchroTeq
Plus and its Web interface using system and application configuration files. It supports both
offline and online modes of operation and provides features to exchange these configuration
files with the SynchroTeq unit. Typically, the configuration files are designed and managed
offline on a maintenance PC and are uploaded to the SynchroTeq Plus as part of the system
commissioning.
The VIZIMAX Event Analyzer is a COMTRADE compatible enhanced waveform viewer that
displays the waveforms and the C/B operation simultaneously.
Please use the following link https://help.vizimax.com to access the Vizimax help site where you
will find all appropriate information and documentation to use Vizimax Commissioning Tool
(VCT) and to configure SynchroTeq Plus unit.

IN/OUT OF SERVICE
The In/Out of Service button is used to enable/disable SynchroTeq Plus control of the C/B.
IN SERVICE BEHAVIOR
When In Service, SynchroTeq Plus can process the OPEN/CLOSE commands and perform
controlled switching of to the C/B. The OPEN/CLOSE commands are either issued from its front
panel (Local mode) or received from the external sources (Remote mode: digital inputs or
communication link).
When In Service, the SynchroTeq Plus executes the following tasks in a continuous loop:
Monitor the C/B interface (coil supervision, C/B status and alarms);
Acquire and compute ac measurements (voltage, current, frequency, zero crossing)
from the source PTs and CTs;
Measure the analog compensation signals (temperature, pressure, coil voltage);
Calculate the predicted C/B operating time based on the compensation
measurements, the idle time and the operation past history (adaptive control);
Monitor and process digital input commands;
Monitor and process communications with the external devices using the serial, USB
and LAN connections;
Perform self-diagnostics in order to detect internal faults;
Manage the front panel;
Signal the alarms and operating conditions on the relay outputs.
When In Service, a Local or Remote Open/Close command will trigger SynchroTeq Plus to
execute the following tasks:
Verify the validity of the control command: the SynchroTeq Plug will accept an OPEN
command only if the C/B is closed, and a CLOSE command only if the C/B is open;
Capture and store waveforms, including a 250 ms pre trigger and a one second post
trigger (configurable);
Synchronize with the phase A current or voltage zero-crossing and activate the coil
control output signals;
Monitor the coil control output signals for alarms (sequence and coil overcurrent);
Measure the C/B operation timing from the 52a contacts and the load current;
Signal the presence of alarms.
For power transformer applications, SynchroTeq Plus performs the following additional tasks:
Acquire and monitor the voltage on the transformer using high voltage bushing
sensors or PTs. The voltage measurement is used for transformer residual flux
calculations and is independent of the C/B position since the transformer de-
energizing can be caused by power outage of the source.
Capture and store waveforms, including a 250 ms pre trigger and one second post
trigger (configurable) when the transformer is de-energized.
Calculate the residual flux when the transformer de-energizes. Note that due to the
presence of C/B grading capacitors, up to 20% of the nominal voltage can still be
present on the transformer when the C/B is open.
Calculate residual flux changes in the event of asymmetrical voltage disturbances
when the power transformer is de-energized.
For a fast switched capacitor bank and uncompensated line with residual charges applications,
the SynchroTeq Plus performs the following additional tasks:
Calculate the actual residual charges that stay trapped inside each capacitor bank.
For compensated line application, SynchroTeq Plus performs the following additional tasks:
Acquire and monitor the voltage on the line side for dynamic reclosing angle
calculation.
Capture and store waveforms, including a 250 ms pre trigger and one second post
trigger (configurable parameters) when one or several phases are tripped, for
Prony’s algorithm calculation.
When the SynchroTeq Plus is Out of Service, the SynchroTeq Plus will not respond to any OPEN
or CLOSE command from the local front panel or the external sources. This mode is used to
block the operation of the C/B for maintenance purposes.
To prevent unwanted operations when downloading a new configuration, you must set the
SynchroTeq Plus to Out of Service.
When Out of Service mode, SynchroTeq Plus continues to perform monitoring functions and calculations,
including residual flux calculations.
A user presses the In Service/Out of Service button on the front panel. (You must
first unlock the front panel using the toggle switch and set the SynchroTeq Plus
operating mode to Local.)
If the OutSVC digital input is activated and the SynchroTeq Plus in Remote mode, the
SynchroTeq Plus will be forced Out of Service. The SynchroTeq Plus will
automatically return to its previous state when the input is deactivated unless the
operating mode has been changed.
A remote command from one of the communication links using the Vizimax
Commissioning Tool (VCT) or a SCADA system.
A major fault affecting the controlled switching of the C/B occurs, including:
The front panel is locked or the SynchroTeq Plus is not in Local mode.
A major fault is present and has not been cleared or corrected.
For remote operations, the SynchroTeq Plus will not return to In Service mode if one of the
following conditions exists:
The Service state is signaled locally by the corresponding status LED (Table 7)
TABLE 7 SERVICE STATE STATUS LEDS
Solid red Out of Service: SynchroTeq Plus is monitoring the application but cannot send
switching commands to the C/B.
Flashing green Busy: SynchroTeq Plus is calculating the residual flux. This state occurs only for
high voltage transformer applications.
Fast flashing red Command not permitted: Close and open commands on the front panel are
not permitted since the SynchroTeq Plus is Out of service.
Blocked: For power transformer applications only: The C/B is locked open
because the residual flux is unknown on the three phases (Synchro Alarm).
Residual flux errors may occur if a wrong calculation is made or if the
Alternating red/green SynchroTeq Plus has been powered up when the transformer is de-energized.
To close the C/B in these circumstances, reset flux to 0 by pressing the Alarm
reset button on the front panel or set a residual flux value, please refer to
SynchroTeq Plus Configuration help site

The SynchroTeq Plus rear panel provides a set of 11 signalization relays (connectors A-B-
C) to signal alarm and status conditions to external devices.
Please refer to the SynchroTeq Plus Installation Guide (STP030000-IG) for more details.
The matrix below provides relationship between signalization relay outputs and
associated alarm or status conditions.
Each relay signaling outputs on the SynchroTeq Plus are used for a specific system conditions.
The R10 and R11 relays are form C (NO and NC) while the other relays are form A (NO):
The R11 relay is used to indicate the SynchroTeq Plus health (the R11NC contact is
closed when the unit is not operative).
The R10 relay is used to indicate that the unit is out of service (R10NO is then
closed): in this mode, the unit cannot send commands to the C/B.
Relays R1 to R9 contacts are used to indicate alarm conditions.
The matrix below provides relationship between signalization relay outputs and associated
alarm or status conditions.

The circuit breaker panel appears on the left bottom of the DASHBOARD display (Figure 15).
Circuit Breaker: Circuit breaker identification as defined by the ‘CircuitBreaker’ system parameter. It
can be the name of the circuit breaker, its function, its inventory number or any meaningful
designation to the user.
Operations: The number of C/B OPENING and CLOSING operations:
When Mechanical wear function is enabled, the wear percentage appears below the operation
counters.
C/B Position: The global C/B status according to the 52a position contacts of each pole:
Open: None of the 52a contacts are active (Open = /52a_A & /52a_B & /52a_C)
Close: All of the 52a contacts are active (Close = 52a_A & 52a_B & 52a_C)
Intermediate: The C/B is neither in the CLOSE or OPEN position.
The position of each pole is also indicated by green and red squares:
: Pole is opened (52a contact inactive)
: Pole is closed (52a contact active)
Last Operation: Date and time of the last C/B operation (YYYY-MM-DD 24h:min:sec).
CBVol: C/B dc control voltage measured by the VCB input. This measurement is used for the C/B
operating time compensation. The CBVol label is programmable.
Ambient T: C/B ambient temperature measured from the T° input (GlobalComp). This input can be
connected to a 4-20mA temperature sensor. This measurement is used for the operating time
compensation of the C/B poles.
Inactivity*: Elapsed time, in hours, since last C/B operation, including external operations. This value
is used for idle time compensation.
Electrical Wear: When electrical wear function is enabled, the cumulated CB electrical wear (i 2t)
values for each phase (for all opening, closing and total switching operations) are displayed in this
table.
Please note that when electrical or mechanical wear alarms are enabled, wear percentage can be
displayed in orange (warning threshold exceeded) or in red (alarm threshold exceeded).
When alarm threshold is exceeded, an alarm is generated.
* External switching, Last operation and Inactivity parameters are counted / updated only if the monitoring of
the C/B position contacts (52a) is enabled or if a digital input is configured as ‘external trip’ detection.
Pressure: Phase compensation sensor measurements, which can apply to hydraulic or pneumatic
pressure, SF6 pressure, and so on. Note that the phase labels are configurable System/Label). If the
PhaseCompA measurement is used for all three phases, only the PhaseCompA measurement will be
displayed (Figure 16).
The Load panel appears on the right top of the DASHBOARD display (Figure 17).
Disabled: RFC is not enabled. In this case, the closing of the C/B is done at a fixed electrical
target angle determined by the configuration parameters.
None: there is no residual flux in the power transformer since it is energized. Note that
this status does not depend on the C/B position, but rather on the presence of voltage
higher than a threshold.
Calculating: SynchroTeq is calculating the residual flux on each phase of the transformer.
This occurs when the transformer is de-energized.
Error: SynchroTeq can’t calculate the residual flux for any of the three phases since the
transformer voltage did not stabilize within the required time. SynchroTeq will close the
C/B using the delayed control strategy at fixed angle (one phase closed at peak voltage
followed by the simultaneous closing of the two other phases).
Ready: The residual flux (RF) of at least one phase has been calculated and the values are
displayed in the load panel.
Unknown: the residual flux is unknown by SynchroTeq. This happens on the first power up
of the unit or when it is restarted and the parameter ‘SaveAndRestoreRFC’ is not checked.
The next measurements display may vary depending of the application (SynchroTeq hardware
configuration and configuration file template used).
Closing Angle: Electrical closing target angle of each pole of the C/B, as set by the application
configuration (for capacitor banks or inductors) or calculated based on the residual flux resulting
from the last transformer de-energization.
Opening Angle: Electrical opening target angle of each pole of the C/B, set by the application
configuration.
VS: Source voltage from the potential transformer input connected to phase A. The source voltage is
not switched by the C/B. VS measurement can be done on the primary or the secondary of the power
transformer.
I: C/B current from the current transformer (CT) inputs. The current can be measured on any side of
the C/B.
VL: Transformer voltage measurement from conventional PTs. These measurements are made for
power transformer applications only,
Residual Flux: calculated residual flux resulting from a transformer de-energization.
The display color of the residual flux also provides extra information:
Dark blue measurement indicates a normal value. When the power transformer is
energized, the residual flux is set to 0.
Red italic 0.0000 indicates that the residual flux is unknown (SynchroTeq was de-
energized when the transformer was energized, then SynchroTeq was re-energized while
the transformer was de-energized) or there is a calculation error.
Blue italic values: The residual flux is calculated and displayed but not used for the
dynamic C/B closing target angle calculation.
DIGITAL INPUTS
The Digital inputs panel located at the bottom right of the Dashboard (Figure 18) displays the status
of the SynchroTeq programmable digital inputs.
The label and input functions are programmable so that the display presentation may vary according
to the application.
*: If the ‘Invert’ parameter is activated, logical digital input states will be inverted.

SENSOR ALARMS
FIGURE 21 LOAD CURRENT WITHOUT LOAD VOLTAGE SOURCE VOLTAGE AND LOAD VOLTAGE DISCREPANCY
For each phase, SynchroTeq Plus measures the electrical wear of the circuit breaker at each
operation (i²t), including protection and local switching operations. The i 2t value for each
phase is reported in the switching operation event. The accumulated electrical wear for each
phase is also computed and stored in the unit and displayed by the web interface or the
configurator tool in remote mode.
When the i²t totalizer (sum of all closing and opening operations for each phase) reaches the
warning or the alarm threshold, SynchroTeq web interface indicators turns orange (warning)
or red (alarm). A C/B alarm is generated when the alarm threshold is reached.
SynchroTeq Plus computed and stored all the switching operations (closing + opening,
controlled + random + external). The accumulated values are displayed by the web interface
or the configurator tool in remote mode.
When the mechanical accumulated values reach the warning or the alarm threshold,
SynchroTeq web interface indicators turns orange (warning) or red (alarm). A C/B alarm is
generated when the alarm threshold is reached.
C/B alarm indicator may be activated under any of the conditions listed below (please refer t o
SynchoTeq Plus Configuration guide):
Excessive C/B coil current was detected during the last operation. This occurs when the current
in one of the coils exceeds 45 A peak during the open or close output activation. This alarm may
indicate a defective SynchroTeq Plus coil driver output or a short circuit in a cable or a coil.
{Alarm:Circuit-Breaker:CoilsSupervision.CoilOverCurr.Enabled}
Coil sequence problem, closing: A coil sequencing error was detected during the last close
operation. When operating the C/B, SynchroTeq Plus monitors the voltage at each OPEN and
CLOSE coil driver output. A “Coil sequence” alarm occurs if the voltages do not correspond to
the expected drive voltage level (125 V dc for example). A sequence error may indicate cable
problems with the C/B coils.
{Alarm:Circuit-Breaker:CoilsSupervision:CoilSequence.PhsA/B/C.Enabled, and
Alarm:Circuit-Breaker:CoilsSupervision:CoilSequence.OperSpecific}
Coil sequence problem, opening: A coil sequencing error was detected during the last opening
{Alarm:Circuit-Breaker:CoilsSupervision:CoilSequence.PhsA/B/C.Enabled, and
Alarm:Circuit-Breaker:CoilsSupervision:CoilSequence.OperSpecific}
Coil supervision error: An error is detected on the C/B coil supervision, indicating that a C/B coil
is probably disconnected or out of service. In this case, the SynchroTeq Plus will automatically
switch itself out of service since control of the C/B is not possible.
{Alarm:Circuit-Breaker:CoilsSupervision:CoilSupersion/Closing/Opening}
A digital input - DI is active. The DI0 to DI3 are programmed with an action and a function in
the application configuration file. The DI labels are also configurable. For more details, please
refer to SynchroTeq Plus Configuration help site. {DigitalInputs:DI0 to DI3}
C/B switching operations are monitored using a combination of the following information:
Excessive inrush current on one of the phases has been detected during the last CLOSE
operation (Figure 24). It indicates that the C/B has been closed too soon or too late. This
timing problem detection is useful for capacitor bank and power transformer applications.
Two inrush current thresholds can be defined (low and normal), and one of the
programmable digital input can be configured to select the desired threshold.
Random operation, closing: The last C/B closing operation was not controlled correctly.
The Vs reference voltage was lost, resulting in an unsynchronized closing or
uncompensated closing operation was done because the dc control voltage or the C/B
ambient temperature was out of range or invalid.
Random operation, opening: The last C/B opening operation was not controlled correctly.
The Vs reference voltage was lost, resulting in an unsynchronized opening or
uncompensated opening operation was done because the dc control voltage or the C/B
ambient temperature was out of range or invalid.
Operation limit exceeded, closing: During the last closing operation, the C/B timing was
out of the targeted operation window in one of the phases. The C/B closing moment
resulting from a command can be measured using the load current (electrical detection)
or the 52a C/B position contact (mechanical detection). Please refer to ‘Operation limit
detection for closing operations’ for more details.
Operation limit exceeded, opening: During the last opening operation, the C/B timing was
out of range on one of the phases, indicating a C/B restrike or re-ignition. Please refer to
‘Operation limit detection for opening operations’ for more details.
Excessive timing correction, closing or opening: This alarm (adaptive control) indicates
that the circuit breaker timing has deviated excessively compared to the last timing tests
(Kadp factor outside alarm limits). This may indicate inadequate
temperature/voltage/pressure timing compensation or excessive wear on the circuit
breaker.
When an Operation limit alarm occurs, an event and the associated waveform are automatically
recorded. Vizimax Event Analyzer allows to analyse these information (refer to ‘Accessing Vizimax
Event ’)
The ‘expected’ zone (green), defined by the Overflow.Minor limits is the normal and
expected zone in which the closing of the C/B should occur.
The minor deviation zones (yellow), defined between the Overflow.Minor and
Overflow.Severe limits. An “operation limit” alarm will be notified if the closing of the C/B
occurs from 1 to 10 consecutive times within these zones (Overflow.Minor.Consecutive
parameter).
The severe deviation zones (red), defined outside of the Overflow.Severe limits. An
“operation limit” alarm will be notified on the first occurrence of C/B closing in these red
zones.
Figure 27 illustrates various closing operation with different current detection moments.
FIGURE 28 OPERATION LIMIT ALARM DETECTED FROM THE 52A AUXILIARY CONTACTS
SYNCHRO ALARMS
The Synchro alarm pane (Figure 30) displays alarms activated when there is a problem with the
controlled switching synchronization or when there is a problem with the residual flux calculation
Phase A synchronization loss: Phase A voltage synchronization signal from the PT is lost and
therefore, controlled switching of the C/B is not possible. In this case and if the option is
enabled, the SynchroTeq Plus will operate the C/B in uncontrolled mode when an OPEN or
CLOSE command is received (random switching). The loss of synchronization alarm occurs if
there is a power outage, a blown PT fuse or a cable problem.
Residual flux calculation error on all the phases (power transformer applications only). This
occurs when the transformer voltage does not settle within one second after the transformer is
de-energized. It may be caused by power swings on the HV side of the transformer.
{Alarm:RFC.Calculation.Error}
Residual flux unknown: Residual flux is unknown in all phases (power transformer application
only). This occurs if the SynchroTeq Plus is powered while the transformer de energized. For
some applications, this situation is critical and may involve special network operating
commands {Alarm:RFC.Unknown.Flux}
Hardware failure: Any hardware failure will inhibit the operation of the SynchroTeq Plus.
Invalid App. configuration: An incorrect (not present or invalid) application configuration
will inhibit the operation of the SynchroTeq Plus. This alarm may occur at the initial
configuration stage, but should not occur after the system is in service.
Invalid Alt. App. configuration: An incorrect (not present or invalid) Alternate application
configuration will inhibit the operation of the SynchroTeq Plus. This alarm may occur only
in ‘CB and a half’ application where alternate application file are required.

EVENTS LOG
An event is a recording of an action performed on the SynchroTeq unit, a command on the circuit
breaker or any alarm or status change occurring in the system. SynchroTeq Plus can store up to 2000
events. The events are presented in the event log, which also provides tool for searching and filtering
the information.

Measured Description
values
TRef Delay from the SynchroTeq detection of a command at the Open/Close digital input up to the
voltage/current zero crossing edge of the synchronization signal.
TFin 3 Phase operation duration from command to completion (including SynchroTeq C/B coils
output command completion).
TPh A/B/C Synchronization delay from zero crossing (I or V) to C/B coil command.
This is an electrical measurement and should be approximately equal to either the Tx values
(for closing) or the Ty values (for opening).
Tom A/B/C Mechanical operating time: The measured delay from the beginning of the C/B coil command
up to the 52a C/B position contact change.
TM A/B/C Corrected mechanical of C/B operating time.
Calculated TM = Tom x ContactTimingslope + ContactTimingOffset
Toe A/B/C Electrical operating time (from current detection): The measured delay from the beginning of
the C/B coil command up to the moment the current is interrupted (opening) or detected
(closing).
Tmeas A/B/C Circuit breaker measured operating time, based either on the mechanical or electrical
operating time: the Tmeas values are equal to either the TM or the Toe depending on the
measurement mode that has been selected (Timing measurement using 52a or not).
Tmf3 or Tmo3 Predicted circuit breaker closing time or opening time calculated by SynchroTeq at the
A/B/C moment of C/B operation. The predicted operating time is always compared to the measured
operating time in order to determine if the C/B is operating properly (see Ratio).
Ratio A/B/C Measured/Predicted operating time comparison: A ratio value equal to :
• = 1.000 indicates that the C/B has operated exactly like expected,
• > 1.000 indicates that the C/B was slower than expected,
• <1.000 indicates that the C/B was faster than expected,
Opening operation: Ratio A/B/C = Tmeas A/B/C / Tmo3 A/B/C;
Closing operation: Ratio A/B/C = Tmeas A/B/C / Tmf3 A/B/C.
Kadp A/B/C Adaptive control correction factor, BEFORE the operation and based on the past history of the
(prior) circuit breaker.
AdapFact Kac Adaptive control feedback correction factor (value between 0 and1).
This parameter indicates the programmed amount of correction applicable to the next C/B
operating time calculation. The higher is the value, the larger will be the predicted operating
time correction when the C/B will be operated again.
Kadp A/B/C Adaptive control correction factor, AFTER the operation and applicable to the next C/B
(next) operation.
I2t CB Electrical wear computed values for each phase, for this switching operation.
A/B/C (Values are set to 0 when i2t monitoring is disabled)
It shows the measured residual flux (in PU) in the power transformer core resulting from its de-
energization. It should be noted that the transformer de-energization is not necessarily related to the
C/B opening since it also occurs if there is a loss of voltage on the upstream side of the C/B
(unswitched side). For “Power Transformer Energized” event type, the residual flux is always equal to
0.
Waveforms are used to ease the system problems identification and should be analyzed each time
there is an operation limit alarm associated with a C/B operation (alarm root cause). Every waveform
includes the load current, the source voltage and the digital I/O signals connected to the
C/B.Waveforms recorded from the de-energization of a power transformer (RFC type) also include
the residual flux calculations.
Each waveform recording has 1250 ms duration (configurable) and can be opened with the Vizimax
Event Analyzer.
To display a recorded waveform associated with an event (Figure 48):
1. Click on the Waveform pictogram associated with the selected event (step 1).
2. Click on the downloaded waveform file name (step 2)
The Vizimax Event Analyzer opens and displays the recorded waveform.
SNAPSHOT LOG
A Snapshot is a record of a waveform including the AC load power signals and the C/B digital signals
triggered by the user to analyse the status of the system in a pre-determined situation. Each
snapshot recording has a duration of 1250 ms (configurable).
SNAPSHOT RECORDING
To record a snapshot:
Using the Snapshot pictogram from the web interface (Figure 49)
The log can be access by selecting the SNAPSHOT menu on the top menu navigation bar of the main

Note on graphic precision and resolution: SynchroTeq Plus uses dedicated electronic circuits to
acquire voltage, current and digital curves. The sampling rate is 167 samples/cycle for the
SynchroTeq Plus product. Data is always interpolated on the curves to have smooth display and
this could introduce slight delays that you may notice when comparing the curves with the
measured and calculated data or the time bars. The curves should be used to view general
operation results but must not be used to make precise measurements. When precise
measurements are required, please use the table time bar (refer to “Display the time bars as a
table” section).
The ‘channel display control’ box located on the left top side of the screen (Figure 59) allows to
select the signals (analog and digital) to be displayed.
In the following sections, please note that analog and digital channels displayed may differ depending on
the application and on the system configuration.
It should be noted that phase labels are programmable (using the Vizimax Commissioning Tool
(VCT)). Phase designation “A, B, C” is the default label but it can be configured to “R, Y, B”, “0, 4,
8” etc.
To select all analog and digital channels for display, select Channels All and to clear the display
select Channels None.
Click on the Analogs button to hide/unhide the selected analog signals and Digitals to
hide/unhide the selected digital signals.
Each signal can be individually selected, but right-clicking in the ‘channel display control area’
(as shown on Figure 59) allows to select/unselect all the signals associated with each phase:
Show Phase X channels only: Displays only the signals from this phase. The two (2)
other phases signals are hidden.
Hide Phase X channels: Hide the signals of this phase. The other phase signals are
still displayed if they were previously visible.
ANALOG SIGNALS
IA, IB, IC are the phase A, B or C load current measurements (measured on either
side of the C/B).
VS (or VSA, VSB, VSC) are the phase A, B or C source voltage measurements
measured on the unswitched side of the circuit breaker (source on the upstream
side of the C/B).
VLA, VLB, VLC are the phase A, B or C load voltage measurements measured on the
downstream side of the C/B (switched side).
FA, FB, FC are phase A, B or C calculated residual flux values. They are only available
for Power Transformer de-energized RFC type events in power transformer
applications.
DIGITAL SIGNALS
Open Out A, Open Out B, Open Out C: SynchroTeq output commands to the C/B
OPEN coils of phases A, B and C.
Close Out A, Close Out B, Close Out C: SynchroTeq output commands to the C/B
CLOSE coils of phases A, B and C.
52a A, 52a B, 52a C: SynchroTeq inputs of C/B 52a position contacts of phase A, B
and C. The 52a contact mirrors the position of the C/B main contact (52a is ON when
the C/B is closed).
Open, Close: SynchroTeq OPEN and CLOSE digital input commands. When both
OPEN and CLOSE signals are activated at the same time, means the command is
received from a communication link or the front or rear SynchroTeq panel.
ZX VS: Zero crossing of the source voltage from phase A (unswitched side of the C/B,
VSA), which is the synchronization reference of the system.
ZX IA: Zero crossing of the current from phase A (IA), which can be used as a
synchronization source for C/B OPEN commands in shunt reactor and capacitor bank
applications.
ZX VA: Zero crossing of the voltage from phase A (unswitched side of the C/B, VSA),
which is the synchronization reference of the system (when VS is not used).
Note: Sync and Cmd signals are reserved for Vizimax internal use.
To highlight a digital trace, click on the corresponding signal name in the channel display control
box (Figure 60).
As shown in Figure 61, the rising edge of the ZX VS, ZX VA or ZX IA zero crossing signals
corresponds to the falling edge of the source synchronization waveform. The SynchroTeq Plus
operates faster when the synchronization source on the falling edge is selected.
To set the display properties of an analog waveform (line style, width and color), right-click the
corresponding analog signal name in the ‘channel display control’ area.
The Event Analyzer remembers the selection settings and applies them for subsequent files.
When opening a waveform file, the phase A analog waveform is automatically displayed using a
+-2PU vertical scale and full recording time on the horizontal scale.
Note: The digital traces cannot be zoomed vertically.
To zoom the analog channels:
Click the ‘Zoom-in’ icon to zoom the waveform by 20% (time and amplitude).
Or drag (left click and hold) the desired zone to zoom from its upper left corner to
the lower right corner (as shown on Figure 63).
Click the ‘Zoom Reset’ icon to restore the default view settings.
Click the ‘Zoom Out’ icon to zoom out by 20%.
Or drag (left click and hold) anywhere in the desired zone from bottom right to left
up to zoom out (as shown on Figure 64).
To pan the waveforms both horizontally and vertically, right click and move the waveforms ().
Quick zoom access to the waveform’s zone of interest where the C/B operation
occurred.
Displays only the analog waveforms, time bars and target zone associated to the phase
indicated on the left of the icon.
When switching the display from phase A, B or C using this icon , the zoom stays on the
same level as the previous one to allow quick comparison of the phases.
The Event Analyzer provides two vertical cursors to measure amplitude (red ‘value cursor’) and
timing information (green ‘timing reference cursor’) on the displayed waveforms.
Use the red and green cursors icons in the toolbar to hide / unhide and position the
cursors in the center of the display area (Figure 67). A unique vertical blue line appears when
the 2 cursors are superimposed. Each cursor can be move by dragging them in the display area.
The amplitude and time measurement area (bottom left area of the event Analyzer) indicates
the value of the displayed analog waveforms corresponding to the red cursor position and the
timing difference between the 2 cursors.
Time (ms): Relative time of the red cursor position from the beginning of the record.
Sample: Analog sample number in the buffer corresponding to the position of the
red cursor (0 = beginning of the record, nnnn = end of the record: see note)
Green Cursor Time Diff: Time difference between the red and green cursors.
The number of samples depends of the event recording time (default is 1250ms) and of the nominal
frequency as the sampling rate is 167 samples / cycle.
Amplitude measured values of the selected analog waveforms at the red value cursor position:
A unique feature of the Vizimax Event Analyzer compared to the other COMTRADE file viewers
is its ability to superimpose the C/B timing information on the display (see Figure 68).
The time bars icon associated with each phase provide information on the C/B
operating time. These values are computed or measured by SynchroTeq unit.
The targeted C/B operating zone associated with each phase is represented by
vertical green dashed lines (limits of targeted operating zone) and red dashed lines
(severe alarm zone limits).
The threshold limits icon displays the current detection threshold (detection)
and the inrush current threshold limits (normal and degraded), represented the
horizontal dashed lines. These limits are defined in the configuration file and are the
same for all phases.
TIME BARS
The time bars provide information about the operation (expected and measured) of the C/B.
Depending on the type of C/B operation, the following time bars are displayed:
SYNCHRONIZATION DELAY
When a close command is received, SynchroTeq Plus imposes a small delay, based on the Phase
A synchronization signal before issuing commands to the C/B coils. This delay allows to
synchronize the mechanical operation of the C/B so that electrical current flow/interruption
occurs at the expected target point on the wave, depending of the type of load.
NETWORK REFERENCE
This is the phase A zero crossing reference signal from which the target angle is established.
The ‘start’ of the reference signal can be defined on the rising or falling edge of the Phase A
voltage or current (OPEN only). As said earlier in this manual, The SynchroTeq Plus operates
faster when the synchronization source on the falling edge is selected.
TARGET ANGLE
This is the electrical target point on the waveform for opening or closing. The target point is
always relative to Phase A. For example, a target angle of 120° on phase B corresponds to the
zero crossing of phase B (120° after phase A).
PRESTRIKE DELAY
Time of arc conduction occurs before the complete mechanical closure of the C/B (main
contacts connect). The prestrike arcing is related to the rate of decrease of dielectric strength
(RDDS), the operating voltage and frequency.
ARCING TIME
Time of arc conduction occurs when the C/B contacts separate. The arcing is related to the rate
of increase of dielectric strength (RDDS) of the C/B, the operating voltage and frequency.
Figure 70 illustrates the time bars and limits for a C/B CLOSING operation.
Step 1: the C/B main contacts are fully separated (maximum distance), offering the maximum
dielectric strength between the contacts.
Step 2: A CLOSE command is executed, the C/B coils are activated, and the mobile contact
starts moving toward the C/B fixed contact.
Step 3: When the C/B contacts are close to each other, the C/B will start conducting before the
contacts are engaged mechanically: this is the prestrike and the current is arcing. The prestrike
occurs when the voltage across the C/B contacts is higher than the dielectric strength (RDDS) of
the C/B. Generally, the prestrike duration is very low or non-existent when the electrical target
point is close to zero crossing and highest when closing the C/B at peak voltage (shunt
inductors).
Step 4: The arc is extinguished when mechanical closure of the contacts occurs and the current
flows by metallic conduction.
For each C/B closing operation, SynchroTeq Plus monitors if the C/B operates as expected and
can generate an alarm signal if necessary.
The operation limits can be centered either:
On the electrical target angle (angle at which conduction starts) for applications
where current starts immediately (capacitor bank, shunt reactors and transmission
lines)
Or on the predicted operating time (where the main contacts are supposed to
mate). This is used for power transformers applications where no current should
starts flowing upon complete C/B closing.
The expected operating zone (Green arrow): defined inside the vertical green
dashed lines. The C/B closing operation should occur in this zone.
The Minor alarm zone (Yellow arrows): when the closing occurs outside the vertical
green dashed lines but inside the severe alarm zone (vertical red dashed lines). An
operation limit alarm is triggered only when several successive operations occur in
this zone (refer to the configuration parameter ‘Overflow.Minor.Consecutive’).
The Severe alarm zone (Red arrows): when the closing occurs outside the severe
zone (vertical red dashed lines). An operation limit alarm is triggered at the first
occurrence in this zone.
To monitor the closing moment of the C/B, SynchroTeq Plus can be configured to use one of
these methods:
1. Current flow detection: the current amplitude exceeds current detection threshold
(electrical operating time bar). This method is used for capacitor bank, shunt reactors
and transmission line applications since current flows almost immediately. In this case,
the target zone is centered on the electrical target angle. In Figure 70, a small error is
induced by the current detection threshold: the current starts flowing almost in the
center of the target zone (vertical green dashed lines), but its amplitude crosses the
current detection threshold later at the vertical red cursor.
2. 52a contacts change: the 52a contact closes when the C/B main contacts are touching
each other (“mechanical operating time” bar). Since there is a small delay between the
52a contact change and the main C/B closure, the “Corrected mechanical operating
time” bar is used as the reference. When this detection method is used, the target zone
is centered on the predicted operating time rather than on the target angle (see Figure
71).
Figure 72 illustrates the time bars and limits for a C/B OPENING operation.
Step 1: the C/B main contacts are fully engaged, establishing metallic current conduction.
Step 2: an OPEN command is received, the C/B coils are activated after the synchronization
delay, and the mobile contacts start to separate. When there is a contact separation the
current will continue flowing by arcing, since in most of the cases, the dielectric strength (RDDS)
of the C/B will not be sufficient to interrupt the arcing. Note that when the current is extremely
low (for example, the magnetization current of a power transformer), the current can be
interrupted at the moment of contact separation. In the other cases, SynchroTeq is used to
control the arcing time of the C/B, minimizing the energy dissipated in the C/B.
Step 3: The current will continue flowing in the C/B by arcing until it is extinguished by the zero
crossing of the current.
Step 4: At the time of zero crossing of the current, if the contacts are mechanically separated
enough, the dielectric strength (RDDS) of the C/B will be sufficient to maintain current
interruption. Therefore, there will be no current after the target point.
At the time of zero crossing of the current, if the C/B dielectric strength (RDDS) is not sufficient
to avoid re-strike or re-ignition, the current will flow in the C/B for another half cycle inducing a
very high energy dissipation in the C/B (Figure 73).
To monitor the opening moment of the C/B, SynchroTeq Plus can be configured to use one of
these methods:
1. Current flow detection: the current amplitude is lower than the current detection
threshold (Electrical operating time bar). This is used for the operation limit alarm.
2. 52a contacts change: the 52a contact opens as the C/B main contacts are separating
(“mechanical operating time” bar). Therefore, there is a delay between the 52a contact
change and the main C/B OPEN state, and the “Corrected mechanical operating ti me”
bar is used as the reference. This adaptive control compensation is used to correct the
next operation of the C/B.
To display time bars as a table for further analysis, select in the menu bar: View/Show
Measured & Calculated Values.
The information displayed varies according to the operation type.

ValFreq Half cycle period. µs
Frequency = 1/Period,
e.g.: for a half cycle of 8333, the frequency is 1/(8333 µs*2)=60.0Hz
Tf To Network reference is the elapsed time between the Phase A signal’s zero ms
crossing for C/B command synchronization to the zero crossing for the
target angle.
The phase A reference signal is the voltage or the current (opening only).
TSync Start time of the Synchronization delay ms
TgtAng A/B/C Electrical target angle for load Energization or De-energization in °
reference to the phase A zero crossing (voltage or current depending of
configuration).
TxA/B/C TyA/B/C Synchronization delay from zero crossing of the reference signal to the ms
emission of commands to the C/B coils.
TomA/B/C Measured mechanical operating time from C/B 52a contacts (measured ms
delay between coil command and the mechanical operation of the C/B
52a contacts).
ToeA/B/C Measured electrical operating time from current detection; that is, the ms
time lapse from a coil command until detection of current
flow/interruption using the current detection threshold.
TomcA/B/C The corrected mechanical operating time is the elapsed time from the coil ms
(TM) command up to the operation of the main contacts. It is calculated using
the corrected value of the 52a contact change based on the Adaptive
control parameters. They compensate for the delay between the 52a
contact and the main C/B chamber status.

Digital certificates are used to verify the identity of the web sites we are connecting to. Digital
certificates are required to establish a secured https connection (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
Secure) over the internet network by encrypting the data. HTTPS pages generally use the SSL
(Secure Socket Layer) or TLS protocol to encrypt data using an asymmetrical system with a
‘public key’ and a ‘private key’. Anything encrypted with the public key can only be decrypted
by the private key and vice-versa. The private key remains securely installed in the web site
owner (in our specific case, in the SynchroTeq unit), and the public key is provided to everybody
that needs to communicate with the SynchroTeq unit. Only the private key owner can prove to
be the owner (valid user) of the digital certificate.
All SynchroTeq units are initially delivered with a Self-Signed certificate, allowing https
connections with an untrusted authority since unknown from the browser (red padlock).
Vizimax provides dedicated commands to upload custom certificate in the SynchroTeq unit. To
obtain a full https trusted connection (green padlock), certificate issuer authority must be
recognized and trusted by your web browser. (Please refer to your IT manager to setup full
https connection).
SynchroTeq unit requires PKCS#12 file certificate format (extension .p12 or .pfx) containing both the
private and public keys.
Default (self-signed) certificate can only be generated and loaded in the SynchroTeq unit by:
The console port ‘removecerts’ command (refer to page 135).
Use the loadcert command to load a custom certificate file from a SD card as follows:
1. Copy the custom certificate file (*.p12 or *.pfx) into a memory SD card and insert it into
the SynchroTeq SD slot on the front panel.
2. Connect your computer to the USB console port (see “Accessing the console port”).
3. Set the SynchroTeq Plus unit ‘Out of Service’, ‘Unlocked’ and in ‘Local mode’.
4. Type loadcert and press Enter (Figure 89).
5. Enter the full file name to be loaded with the extension and press Enter.
6. Enter the passphrase (created at the certificate issuing) and press Enter.
7. The loading will take few seconds, after which “Completed” or “Error” will be prompted.
In case of ‘Error’, first check that you are using the correct passphrase and then execute a ‘removecerts’
command and restart the ‘loadcert’ procedure from step 1.
REMOVING CERTIFICATE AND GENERATING DEFAULT CERTIFICATE USING THE USB CONSOLE
PORT COMMAND
Use the removecerts command to remove all certificates from the SynchroTeq unit and to
generate a default (self-signed) certificate as follows:
1. Connect your computer to the USB console port (see “Accessing the console port”).
2. Set the SynchroTeq Plus unit ‘Out of Service’, ‘Unlocked’ and in ‘Local mode’.
3. Type removecerts and press Enter (Figure 90).
4. The operation will take few seconds, after which “Completed” or “Error” will be
prompted.
Generating and loading a default (self-signed) certificate in the SynchroTeq Unit is only available with this
‘removecerts’ console port command. Web interface load certificate command does not allow generating
and loading a default (self-signed) certificate in the unit.
Procedure for setting a custom certificate may vary depending of your default web browser.
Contact your IT administrator to properly install your root and intermediate certification
authorities’ certificates in your workstation or server certificate store (please note that Firefox
web browser use its own private store instead of the ‘Windows store certificate’).
1. Open your web browser and connect your computer to the SynchroTeq unit (refer to
section’Web interface browsers’ page 40).
Only administrator and maintenance user groups can upload configuration and certificate files.
2. Select the System panel, Target file management menu, and select Security
Certificate (step A).
3. On your computer, browse the certificate you want to upload to SynchroTeq (step B),
enter the passphrase associated with the security certificate (step C) and select the
UPLOAD command (step D).
4. The certificate upload result will be displayed either by “Successful” or “Failed”. An
Upload failure can occur if the certificate or the passphrase is invalid.
In case of ‘Failed’, first check that you are using the correct passphrase and that all your certificate
parameters are valid. Then clear the web browser data cache, and restart the ‘load certificate’ procedure
from step 1.
You can verify that the correct certificate is loaded in the SynchroTeq unit by using the
web browser tool commands (contact your IT administrator if needed).
FIRMWARE UPDATE
Vizimax regularly publishes SynchroTeq firmware update in order to implement new features
and enhance the product robustness.
The firmware files are available from the VIZIMAX web support page
(http://www.vizimax.com/support/). Customers are invited to register to the WEB site in order
to have news about the product upgrades.
A firmware update does not affect the configurations files or the logs.
- For proper operation of SynchroTeq Plus unit, never leave the SD card in the SD card slot when unused. Leaving
an SD card in the slot would prevent the SynchroTeq unit to boot correctly.
- SD card maximum memory size is 32GB, and must be initially formatted FAT32 by using the windows system
'format' command.
6 Wait while the update proceeds. The SynchroTeq Alarm LEDs on the front panel will
shuffle sequentially for around 1 minute during the update.
7 When the front panel Alarm LEDs will stop shuffling, remove the SD card from the SD
slot.
8 The unit will complete the boot process for around 30 seconds. At the end of the
process, the unit status LEDs will return to the steady state (red for unlock, Red for
‘Local mode’ and Red for ‘Out of Service’.
9 To ensure that the update was successfully performed, type the ‘HWINFO’ command
and verify the Firmware version.
10 Normally, you should put the unit back ‘In service’, ‘Remote’ and ‘Locked’.
FIRMWARE UPDATE USING THE VIZIMAX COMMISSIONING TOOL (VCT) ‘ON LINE’

TROUBLESHOOTING
This section covers some potential problems related to the SynchroTeq Unit only.
Symptoms:
1. Verify that there is a dc power source available between C-5 (negative) and C-4
(positive). The dc voltage magnitude should be in accordance with the value indicated
on the name plate (located on the top of the chassis).
a. If the dc voltage is not present or out of operating range, take necessary actions
to recover.
b. If the correct dc voltage is present, verify the connection polarity
2. Verify that the ambient temperature is in the SynchroTeq operating temperature range.
a. If the ambient temperature is out of range, take necessary actions to recover.
b. If the ambient temperature is within the operating range, ensure the internal
SynchroTeq air convection is correct to respect internal operating temperature
(refer to ‘SynchroTeq Plus Installation Guide’ STP030000-IG-en).
If all these verifications are correct, please take note of the model number and options and
contact your Vizimax Representative or the Vizimax Technical Support Team.
By the alarms LEDs displayed on the front panel (refer to page 31)
By the signalization relay outputs (refer to Signalization relays and Alarms page 34)
By the alarm banner and the alarm page of the web interface (refer to page 53)
Most of these alarm indicators are relative to C/B and control system, but ‘Power’ indicators,
‘Self-check’ indicators and ‘Alarm’ indicators are generally relatives to SynchroTeq unit.
Please refer to the corresponding sections for more details on alarm indicator signification.
The alarm matrix on section 34 also provides significant information on the unit status.
An external By-Pass circuit has been activated, forcing SynchroTeq unit in ‘Out of
service’ mode.
A programmable ‘’OutSVC’’ digital input is activated (from external device).
A major fault affecting the controlled switching of the C/B occurs, including:
Invalid SynchroTeq configuration file.
Invalid C/B compensation factors and ‘’Force Out SVC’’ is enabled for
parameter Alarm:Action in the application configuration file.
Analog input out of range (for example, C/B voltage or ambient temperature).
The SynchroTeq unit cannot be reset to In Service mode from the front panel if:
A major fault is present and has not been cleared or corrected.
An ‘’OutSVC’’ digital input is active.
Please refer to page 25 for more details on ‘In service’ ‘Out of service’ mode.
In some circumstances, SynchroTeq does not execute Open and Close commands.
Please clear the alarm and set the unit ‘In service’ mode to execute Open and Close commands.
Symptoms:
Verifications:
1. Verify that the unit is powered since at least one minute. The Power indicator should be
lit.
2. Verify that your computer is properly networked and connected with the SynchroTeq
unit. Verify the connections to the Ethernet switch or router. If SynchroTeq is installed in
a remote location, verify that your computer has access to the other devices at the
same location.
3. Verify that the SynchroTeq IP address and mask you specify are correct. Usually, there
are stickers installed on the SynchroTeq unit to indicate the programmed Ethernet port
addresses (SynchroTeq factory default IP address is 192.168.1.2).
4. Verify that your computer network interface settings are compatible with the
SynchroTeq settings. Refer to the computer network adapter settings verification
procedure describes below.
5. Verify the number of authorised simultaneous connection (10) has not been reached.
6. Verify the password is valid.
Note that IP address and user password could have been reset to factory default when some console port
commands have been used (refer to page 125 for more details).
PING COMMAND
First, verify that communication is possible between your PC computer and SynchroTeq.
1. For that, first start the Command window on your computer as illustrated below.
2. In the command window, type the “ping 192.168.1.2” command to determine if your
computer can communicate with SynchroTeq, where 192.168.1.2 is the IP address of
the SynchroTeq service port. You should see a window as below:
One of them is “General failure”; this means the computer is not able to send the message to
the host (SynchroTeq), see below.
Another message is “Unreachable”, it means you can access to the router but it does not know
the IP address. This is not our case, because we are directly connected.
1- Go to the “Control Panel”. Click on “Network and Internet”, “Network and Sharing
Center”, “Change Adapter settings”.
3- Double click on “Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)” and select “Use the following IP
address”.
5- Finally, click “OK” and try again the “ping” command, as before, to verify that
SynchroTeq is responding. You should see the message as below. If it works, connect to
the Web page. If not, contact your IT manager.
