BASLER DECS-125 series AVR

Information to Operators and Owners of Power Plants Concerned engines / components
installations Basler DECS-125 AVR used for generators
in power plants manufactured between
1991 – 2005.

Current situation
The Basler model DECS-125 series AVR is
no longer available.

Solutions
The generator excitation control can be
upgraded with an ABB Unitrol 1020 unit.
This is done as a Service Project.

Introduction
Basler DECS-125 AVR system was used as Wärtsilä’s standard primary
controller for the generator excitation control during years 1994-2001 in power
plant installations. This type is no longer available as spare part.
ABB Unitrol 1000 has been standard from 2002 until 2013.
ABB Unitrol 1020 has been the new standard since beginning of 2014.

As a replacement for DECS-125, Wärtsilä offers as first choice an upgrade to ABB

Unitrol 1020. Also newer models from BASLER are available. Upgrading is done as a
Service Project.
ABB Unitrol 1020 offers wider range of operation modes and functions:
Power factor control for generators operating parallel with grid.
Droop and VDC control for generators operating on island mode where
generator need to support system voltage and share reactive load between
generators (VDC).
VDC mode includes advanced digital reactive load sharing. Boost is for grid
support in short circuit situations. Power system stabilizer (PSS) is available as
an option.
Event and data loggers with time synchronization are new functions of Unitrol-1020.
CMT software provides tools for monitoring and solving issues in control system.

Action
Check the type of the generator excitation controller. If the AVR system has Basler
DECS-125 series installed, contact your nearest Wärtsilä Service Network office for an
AVR system upgrade offer. Please specify the Services’ solution ID 000873.

Recommendation
It is recommended that installations equipped with DECS 125 are upgrade as soon as
possible.
