5.2 Protection Elements

(1) Definite time OC protection
There are three stages for the definite time OC protection. Each can be used as instantaneous
overcurrent protection when its setting operation time is set to be zero, and controlled by direction
and complex voltages. Each stage and its control elements are put on/off through hard/soft straps.
The direction element has memory function, therefore it operates correctly even if its reference
voltages are approaching zero during fault.

(2) OC protection speed-up trip after close

The protection function, which can be controlled by complex voltages, can be operated as
instantaneous OC protection when closing or reclosing on fault within 3s. The complex voltages
element can be put on/off by hard/soft straps.

(3) Direction and complex voltages element

The principle of direction element for OC protection:
U 
 90  Arg  90
I e  j

The principle of complex voltages element:

U min  U1dz or U 2  U 2dz
 
where I  : current phasor, U  : phase-phase voltage phasor, subscript  =a or b or c,  =bc
or ca or ab, U min : minimum phase-phase voltage of Uab, Ubc, Uca, U1dz : UV setting value of
complex voltages, U 2 : negative sequence voltage, U 2 dz : negative sequence setting value of
complex voltages,   45 : sensitivity angle of direction element.
Note: The OC protection is still effective during TA line break. In order to avoid taking the fault
result as TA line break and blocking the direction element during the fault, the alarm delay time of
TA line break must be greater than the maximum time delay of all the directional OC protections.

(4) Overload
Including OL protection and OL alarm;
OL protection: the element issues a fault signal after a delay time (setting value) when anyone
of the three phase currents is greater than the OL protection setting value.
OL alarm: the element issues an alarm signal after a delay time (setting value) when anyone of
the three phase currents is greater than the OL alarm setting value.

(6) Inverse time OC protection

The unit provides three types of inverse time OC characteristics according to IEC-4 and
BS142.1996.
① Extremely inverse time characteristic
The relationship between operating time and current is followed below:
Fs
t
( I / I p )2  1
② Very inverse time characteristic
The relationship between operating time and current is followed below:
Fs
t
(I / I p ) 1
③ Normally inverse time characteristic
The relationship between operating time and current is followed below:
Fs
t
( I / I p ) 0.02  1

11
eDCAP-601A Universal Digital Protection Unit: User’s Manual

where Fs : inverse time multiplier setting, I : the secondary current, I p : setting (pick-up)
value of the current, t: operation time.
In actual applications, different electrical equipment should select appropriate inverse time
characteristic curve. In fact, the users can have many characteristic curve options due to different
characteristic, I p and Fs settings.
In the value-setting table, only the pick-up value I p and time multiplier setting Fs can be
set. In some applications, I p and Fs have to be calculated if they are not directly given. For
example:
⑴ If I p and one set of operating current and operation time are given, Fs can be calculated
through following equations:
① For extremely inverse time characteristic:
2
I 
Fs  T1  1   T1
 I p 
② For very inverse time characteristic:
I 

 I p 
③ For normally inverse time characteristic:
0.02
I 
Fs  T1  1   T1
 I p 
⑵ If two sets of operating currents and operation times are given (I1,T1 & I2,T2), I p and Fs can
be calculated through following equations:
① For extremely inverse time characteristic:
T1 I 1  T2 I 2 T1T2 ( I 2  I 1 )
2 2 2 2
Ip  Fs 
T1  T2 T1 I1  T2 I 2

② For very inverse time characteristic:

T1 I 1  T2 I 2 T1T2 ( I 2  I 1 )
Ip  Fs 
T1  T2 T1 I 1  T2 I 2
③ For normally inverse time characteristic:

set independently.
Charging conditions: the reclosing function is on, the CB is in normal operation status (ON) and
all blocking signals are ineffective. After a period of charging time, the charge finishing flag will be
displayed on the display window.
It will time the reclosing delay when the CB issues a trip signal (the CB from on to off). After a
definite time(setting value), the element will issue a close signal if all three phase currents are less
than 0.06In.
The following protections can start auto-reclosing function: OC protection with 3 stages, OC
protection speed-up trip after close, zero-sequence OC protection with 3 stages, and zero-sequence
OC protection speed-up trip after close.
The signals of blocking auto-reclosing: any BSI can be used as the block. It can be
normally-open contact or normally-close contact according to the design requirement.

(12) Synchro-check, voltage-check

The unit provides synchro-check, voltage-check of the feeder, and voltage-check of the busbar
before closing operation. All these functions can be enabled or disabled through hard / soft straps
setting. The functions are achieved by inserting their output contacts into closing circuit in series and
their contacts must be normally-close.
Either phase-earth voltage or phase-phase voltage of the feeder side is allowed to use as
synchro-voltage. The rated secondary synchro-voltage of the feeder side can be set in the
value-setting table.
In the value-setting table, the phase-angle of the synchro-voltage of the feeder side can be set to
be Arg (U ab )  Arg (U x ) , that is, the phase angle difference between the voltage of the busbar
side and that of the feeder side. For example, if the voltage of the feeder side is the phase-phase
voltage Ubc, the phase-angle of the synchro-voltage of the feeder side is
Arg (U ab )  Arg (U bc )  120 .
Phase-phase voltage will be used as the characteristic quantity of live-level and dead-level that
have the fixed operation values of 0.7Un and 0.3Un respectively.
The possible on-off states of the checks are shown in the following table:

(14) Zero-sequence OC
The function includes zero-sequence OC protection with 3 stages and zero-sequence OC alarm.
Zero-sequence OC protection: used in resistively earthed networks, when the zero-sequence
current is greater than the setting value, the relay will issue a fault signal after a definite time delay.
Zero-sequence OC alarm: used in isolated neutral or resonant earthed networks, when the
zero-sequence current is greater than the setting value, the relay will issue an alarm signal after a
definite time delay.
Zero-sequence OC protection with 3 stages can be blocked by zero-sequence voltage. When the
zero-sequence voltage is less than the block setting value, the protection is blocked. The block can
be enabled/ disabled through on-off setting.

(17) Earth-fault detection

It adopts independent EF detection principle which will issue an alarm signal when single phase
EF occurs. This function can be enabled/ disabled through on-off setting.
Start condition: zero-sequence voltage > zero-sequence voltage start value, and 3I0 >
zero-sequence current start value.
In isolated neutral network, after the function starts, the relay will issue an alarm signal when
residual reactive power is greater than 0, that is, the sensitivity angle is 90°. In resonant earthed
network, the relay will issue an alarm signal when residual active power is less than 0, that is, the
sensitivity angle is 180°.

(22) Programmable logic control outputs (PLC outputs)

The unit provides 4 PLC outputs, namely PLC1, PLC2, PLC3 and PLC4.
PLC outputs carry out their functions according to the logic matrix combination of the BSIs.
The unit provides independent on-off and time delay settings for every PLC output.
The logic matrix is set in the value-setting table, including:
① Signals selection: BSIs and their effective logic level will be selected.
② Signal-logic-relationship: The selected signals can be “logic and” or “logic or”.
③ Output mode selection: Output can be logic level or pulse, and the pulse width
can be set.
④ Pulse width: Pulse width can be set according to requirement only when the
output mode is set to pulse.
⑤ Alarm mode selection:
Alarm mode: Fault signal and trip signal will be issued.
No-alarm mode: Only trip signal without any local and remote indication signals will
be issued.

(23) Battery
The internal rechargeable battery will be charged automatically when the device is powered on.
The Nvram will be supported by the battery if the device is powered off. One-year power supply can
be ensured if the battery is fully charged.

(24) Unit internal failure alarm

The unit cyclically checks parts of internal circuit, e.g., protection value RAM, A/D sampling
interruption, etc. The details see Fault Table.
(25) Circuit-breaker (CB) status determination
The CB status is determined by either the TWJ signal or the combination of TWJ signal and the
auxiliary contacts of the CB. The two determination methods can be selectable in the setting table.
When the CB status is determined by anyone of the BSIs, the combination method is selected. When
the CB status cannot be determined effective by all the BSIs, the TWJ signal is selected as the CB
status only.
The combination method is a recommendation one in actual applications because it is useful to
improve the reliability of some protection functions.
(26) Fault WR
The function is designed to record wave data during fault, which consists 4 cycles of pre-fault
waves and 100 cycles of after-fault waves. The data will be stored in NVRAM with multiple
documents, 5 documents at most.
The wave recording can also be operated by manual operation. Change the status of the BSIs,
assigned Manual Start Wave-recorder in the BSI setting table, from “off ” to “on” can start the wave
recorder.
(27) Hard strap
Most of protection functions can be enabled/ disabled by soft straps (on-off setting) and hard
straps. The relationship between them is logic AND. The protection functions are effective only
when both straps are in on (enabled) positions.
BSIs can be used as hard straps; the available status of the BSIs can be set in the setting table.
Leave the BSIs un-checked if no hard straps are needed.
(28) Test Mode
The test mode can be accessed by two methods:
1. Set the “Switch Test Mode” to test mode.
2. The status of the assigned overhaul strap is “on” in the setting table.
The light on the device panel will be twinkling. The test mode is invalid when these two
conditions above are not satisfied at the same time.

If the test mode is invalid, “Relay test”, “Fault alarm test”, “BSI test” can not be accessed.

When the test mode is available, the event and alarming can be uploaded to the host computer if
the test report is set to be reported, not vice versa.
