Adjectives
What is an adjective?

An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun.

Examples: beautiful hat, furry dog, six candles

❖ Margot wore a beautiful hat at the pie-eating contest.

❖ Furry dogs may overheat in the summertime.
❖ My cake should have six candles.

Adjectives usually come before nouns.

But adjectives can do more than just modify nouns. They go after verbs and act as a
complement to linking verbs or the verb to be. (is, am, are, has, have, get, become, look,
seem, appear, sound, taste, smell, fell)

Examples:

❖ That girl is really happy.

❖ It smells gross in the locker room.
❖ Kerosene lamps can be dangerous.
