1.Identify ways on how to monitor and record the growth and progress of
chicken, tilapia and goat
LEARNING
OBJECTIVES 2. Use the internet and research some monitoring forms used by animal raisers
in monitoring and recording the growth and progress of animal/fish

IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the learner’s activity and
assessment sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
Monitoring and recording the growth and progress will show whether your farm business
yields income or not. Assuming that business is good, farm products are abundant, and daily
operations are at their peak, you should be able to set standards for all aspects of production. For
example, quantity of meat produced every day, number of young born every breeding cycle, number
of animals sold every selling season. In the implementation process, as farm operators we should
be able to translate all our actions to income generation and experience gain.

Ways on How to Monitor and Record the Growth/ Progress of a Chicken

Care for the Chicken

Climate conditions usually affect fowls easily, so it is important you give special attention to
the kind of shelter provided to them. The chicken coop should be well-ventilated, long and wide. The
flooring must have wood shavings, sand rice husks or other materials for the layers and egg laying
purposes. Broiler need much care while they are still chicks. They need heat after they are hatched
and until they are four weeks. During cold and rainy weather, cover the broiler’s house with clean
sacks.

Food and Diet of the Chicken

Feeding the Layers
Chickens which are five weeks old can be prepared for egg laying by following the feeding and
rationing.
Age Ration Contents in %
1 day to 6 weeks starter feeds 20.25%
6 days to 14 weeks growers 16%
14 weeks to 20 weeks Developers 14%
The young hen should consume all the rations first before giving the next food. They can be fed three
to four times a day’
Feeding the Broilers
Age %

2|P a g e
½ months 23% protein
½ -2 months 20% protein
Food for broilers aside from instant feds are root crops like kamoteng kahoy, chopped fish,, copra,
ipil-ipil leaves, oysters, etc.

Maintenance and Breeding of the Chicken

While hens lay eggs without a rooster being around, if you want to hatch your own chicks a
rooster is necessary. The number of roosters per hen various depending on the breed, but is typically
6-8 hens per rooster. If there are too many roosters they spend too much time fighting and less time
breeding. If there are not enough roosters, there will not be enough matings to ensure a high
percentage of fertile eggs produced. Otherwise management of a breeder flock is similar to keeping
an egg production flock. If you are selectively breeding you can use trap nests so that the hen is
trapped into a nest when she goes into lay an egg. This will allow you to identify which egg came from
which hen.

Ways on How to Monitor and Record the Growth/ Progress of the Fish Tilapia

Pond Care and Maintenance

Maintain the water depth of a pond at 80 to 100 cm for fish growth and production of fish
organism in the water known as plankton. Apply fertilizer regularly to maintain the production of fish
organism. Application of ammonium phosphate fertilizer at the rate of one kilo per 250 square meters
is necessary. Eliminate aquatic weeds, for these compete with planktons for nutrients derived from
fertilizers. Avoid contamination of pond with pesticides. Contamination of the pond is possible if the
water used is toxic. Contaminated water is dangerous to the fish being cultivated.

Food and Diet

Tilapia does very well on a diet of pellets and pellets are a good basis for their diet. It is
good to provide them with some vegetables in their diet. Tilapias love frozen food and can eat large
amounts of it. As an omnivorous animal, tilapia will eat diets composed of both animal and vegetable
origin as well as algae/plankton. Tilapia will cope with a relatively low feed quality, making them a
suitable species for feed of a lower nutritional value than might be necessary for some other
aquaculture species. Supplemental feeding may be needed during the second or third month of
cultivation if the plankton growth is sparse and the growth of fish is slow.

Maintenance and Breeding

The Nile tilapia breeds in ponds throughout the year. It is one of the favourite fishes to
cultivate in ponds. Most farmers choose to keep only male tilapia in the grow out stage. Male tilapia
have proved to be more profitable as they grow bigger and are more time and energy efficient.
Female tilapia tends to waste energy and time due to breeding.

Ways on How to Monitor and Record the Growth/ Progress of a Goat

Care for the Goat

A good housing for goats is very essential as they are prone to pneumonia when regularly
exposed to rain. A goat house must be well ventilated, clean, and dry. There should be separate pens
for lactating does, dry does, kids and bucks. Install a strong fence around the pasture. Your fence
should not only keep the goat in, it should also keep predators out. Goats are smart and can climb,
so they commonly escape from their pen. The fence should be high and difficult to climb, measuring
at least 6 feet high. A fenced loafing area should be provided complete with feeding racks and water
troughs.

Food and Diet of the Goat

Goats are known to relish paragrass , stargrass , napier grass, guinea grass, and
centrosema among other grasses and legumes. Goats like other livestock, that require the same
nutrients such as protein, carbohydrates, fats , minerals, vitamins, and water. During the rainy
season, keep the goats in their pen. Feed them with cut grass and salt. Salt makes goats keep a
steady appetite making them grow faster and produce more milk.

Maintenance and Breeding of the Goat

The females should possess a long preferably low set body, roomy hind quarter, well-formed
pliable udder, active foraging habit and good mothering instinct. The female should have the
maternal character of protecting her kid and with better milk feeding .Females having ability to yield
2 or 3 kids in parturition can be selected. As a guideline, females should be mated only when they
reach 70 per cent of the average adult body weight.

Male animals should be in good body condition, masculine, legs should be stronger and free
from defects. Soft and shiny skinned goats should be selected and this indicates the health of the
animal. Animals with broader back and rump regions will be better. Broad back and rib cages
indicates that, goat having better feed intake capacity. Whereas broad rump region indicates better
breeding characters. Breeding ewe of indigenous breeds should be 18 to 24 months depending upon
their body condition. Body weight of an ewe at breeding should normally be less than the adult body
weight of that breed. The libido of the ram is very important to achieve desirable breeding.

How Can Internet Help Enhance our Knowledge on Animal/Fish Raising

The internet is a good source of free information. One can obtain useful information to
improve decision making and maximize productivity in animal raising. Internet provide us
better understanding of animal requirements and behavior increasing efficiency and sustainability. It
can send right information to the right person at the right time. New trends and relevant approaches
are widely available in the internet. Internet generates new knowledge, new technology thus making
animal raising easier, faster and more productive.

REMEMBER
Key Points

The Importance of Monitoring and Keeping an Updated Record of the Growth/Progress of

Animal/Fish
 To check closely on the general condition and health of the animal/fish
 To determine the quality of the growth of the animal/fish and to improve it as soon as possible,
whenever necessary
 To determine the efficiency of feeding and to improve it immediately, if necessary;
 To adjust the daily feeding ration and to save on feed costs;
 To check if the stocking rate is adequate, if too high, the largest animal/fish maybe cropped out
and transferred to market immediately
 To check if stock is reaching target weights, and to help plan or revise your production or
harvesting schedule
