Basic Details
Prior to the ceremony, the AFC announced that since there were no acting winners/ nominees for last
year’s Best Picture winner, Roma, the winners of all four acting categories (Best Actor, Best Actress,
Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress) of the previous year will act as hosts for the
ceremony. Later, the AFC announced that this would be the new rule for all upcoming ceremonies.
Nominees
The nominations were announced on 5th January. 2019 by founder and president of AFC, Ambrose
Leung, as well as actors Keanu Reeves and Idris Elba, and talk-show host Lily Singh. Once Upon a
Time in Hollywood and The Irishman led the nominations with ten apiece, with both being nominated
for categories including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor/ Supporting Actor. This was
followed by 1917 with nine nominations.
Awards
1917 won a leading five awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. This was followed by
Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, which won three awards. Joker and Little Women won two
awards apiece. Avengers: Endgame, Bombshell, Ford v Ferrari, Judy, Marriage Story, Parasite,
Rocketman, and Toy Story 4 won one apiece.
The telecast gained nearly 36 million viewers in the United States, an 16% decrease from the previous
ceremony (42.6 million), which had the highest viewership in Ambrose Awards’ history. The Nielsen
Ratings also had a decrease from the previous ceremony.
The ceremony received praise for its content, rundown, hosting and distribution of nominees, in
particular Greta Gerwig’s nomination for Little Women and Awkwafina’s nomination for The
Farewell in the respective categories of Best Director and Best Actress, comparing it favourably with
the 77th Golden Globe Awards, the 73rd British Academy Film Awards and the 92nd Academy Awards.
Critical acclaim was also given for Gerwig’s win for Best Adapted Screenplay for Little Women and
Hildur Guðnadóttir’s win for Best Original Score for Joker. However, criticism was drawn to the
biased distribution of awards and the longer runtime as compared to the previous ceremony.
