Ceremony Information

Prior to the ceremony, the AFC announced some changes to the 9th Ambrose Awards. Firstly, the
ceremony was held at the Radio City Music Hall, Manhattan, New York, New York, instead of its
usual venue for the past 8 ceremonies, the Dolby Theatre, in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.
Secondly, the ceremony was televised by NBC, rather than its usual broadcaster for the past 8
ceremonies, American Broadcasting Company (ABC). Thirdly, it was announced that the Ambrose
Award-nominated/winning actors of the film that won Best Picture in the previous ceremony (in this
year’s case, The Shape of Water) will host the ceremony, rather than the director (s) and producer (s)
of the film. They will, along with the founder and president of AFC, Ambrose Leung, produce the
next ceremony instead. Fourth, the ceremony was held in early February, rather than its usual late-
January date. The nominations were announced in early January. Fifth, there would be ten nominated
films for Best Picture, rather than its usual nine films. The number of nominated films for other
categories remain unchanged.

Nominees

The nominations were announced on 6th January, 2019 by founder and president of AFC, Ambrose
Leung, as well as actresses Saoirse Ronan, Eva Longoria and actor Ansel Elgort. A Star Is Born led
the nominees with twelve, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor/Actress/Supporting
Actor. This was followed by Black Panther and The Favourite, with ten nominations apiece.

Awards

Roma won a leading four awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. This was followed by
The Favourite, which won three awards. A Star Is Born, First Man and Vice won two awards apiece.
Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk,
Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse and The Wife won one apiece.

Ratings

The telecast gained over 39 million viewers in the United States, a 4% increase from the previous
ceremony (35.2 million) and had the highest viewership in Ambrose Awards’ history. The ceremony
also had the highest Neilsen Ratings ever, with 28.1% of home users watching the ceremony, a 5%
increase from the previous ceremony (26.7%)
