START WITH THE

BASICS

Before Starting a Training Session

Remember, that before starting a training session with
your dog it is important that their basic needs are met.
Meaning that they should be fed, they have done their
business, and were exercised right before their training
sessions - especially those really high-energy dogs!

What to Do if You and Your Dog are

New to Working Together
This means you are in the communicating-building phase.
To offset this temporary disconnect (could last a few
weeks), manage their physical environment! A great
option is to attach them to you with a leash.

Supplies You'll Need

Treats like boiled chicken and high-value treats like
these and these
Dog chews
Toys - 2-3 of their favorite toys

YOU TRAIN
YOUR DOG?

Training can be broken up

into primary and secondary
training sessions.

Primary training sessions are where

you are completely focused on your
dog, teaching them something new,
or reviewing something they
recently learned. Secondary training
sessions require you to snap in to
training mode when the situation
dictates.

Primary training sessions can be

done 20 minutes to 1 hour a day.
You can break those up into 2-15
minute sessions at a time

Secondary training sessions can be

done when required.

Lure training will come in handy for

multiple cues like sit and lay down. Lure
training is where you lure your dog into
a specific physical position.

Some dogs will take to it easier than

other dogs, so be patient with your dog
and work at their pace!

And remember that when using a lure,

your dog to sit.
Place a treat right near your dog’s nose.
Slowly move the treat up and back
towards your dog. As soon as your

saying out loud “good lay down” as they

Reward for doing a “stand up” with a

STOP PROBLEM BITING,
CHEWING, AND JUMPING
Video 5 covers days 14-17 of the 30 Day course. It will focus on working through some
common problem behaviors, like biting, chewing, and jumping.

- 18 -
30 DAY PERFECT PUP

DAY 14: STOP PROBLEM BITING

There are two main reasons puppies bite: because they're teething and because it's
natural for dogs to use their mouths to engage with the world. They don't have hands!

Be aware that puppy biting is normal and can last for a period of months. Your goal is
to help decrease and redirect the behavior, not extinguish it over night. When your pup
bites, you essentially have two choices. You can either redirect to a proper chew or toy
or you can redirect to a training session.

To redirect to a chew, when your pup starts to bite do the following: Say no or 'ah-ah'
and then direct their biting to a proper chew or toy. Once they start to bite on the
proper chew, praise and reward. To redirect to a training session, put a treat near their
nose and lure them away from whatever they are biting on. Put them into a sit-stay
and then reward and praise when they comply. Repeat every time biting occurs.

DAY 15: STOP PROBLEM

CHEWING

Maybe your dog is chewing you AND

your stuff. If they are getting into things
they shouldn't, there is a good chance
you aren't controlling their environment
enough. Ie they have access to things
they shouldn't!

Remember: simply taking away an item

you don't want them to have won't
teach them how you want them to
behave.

You will want to teach your dog "Leave

It" to help set them up for success and
teach them to stop chewing.

Practice with any item by setting it

down, and saying "leave it." If your dog
goes for it, grab the item, say "uh uh,"
then toss it back down. Once they
successfully leave it practice and
repeat. Slowly increasing difficulty in
what you are asking of them.

DAY 16: STOP PROBLEM

JUMPING
If you have a dog that likes to jump, they
need an outlet for their energy - both
mentally and physically. So training and
exercise are both musts! When teaching
this, the goal is to make sure all four of
your dog's paws are on the ground any
time they get attention.

When your dog jumps on you, you

should either ignore them or turn around
to remove access to you (aka
reinforcement for your dog).

If they jump, redirect them into a sit stay.

Start petting them. If they start to jump,

LEASH WALKING
DAY 22: LEASH WALKING
INSIDE THE HOME
Whether you want to be
proactive about leash walking
or you're struggling with leash
walking, this is for you!

Before training, it is critical that you let

your dog play and exercise before
working on something unnatural, like
leash walking.

When training leash manners, start

inside and slowly work your way
outside and then eventually to real
walks on the leash.

With your dog on leash, warm your dog

up by working on a couple look at me's,
sits, stays, etc.. Make sure you can get
their attention.

Start walking and as the leash is loose,

reward. If your dog starts to pull, stop
walking. Get their attention to come
back to you and reward when they do.

Change directions frequently, keep your

dog guessing. Remember to frequently
reward loose leash walking. If they start
to pull, stop and change directions or
redirect to a sit. Practice and repeat!

You want to make sure your dog will

follow you reliably without tension on
the leash before moving on!
