EMF equation Eg = PΦNZ/60A

Φ = flux /pole in weber, weber

Z = Total number of armature conductors

( Number of armature slots * number of conductors/slot )

[ S*(Z/S) ]

P = Number of generator poles

A = Number of parallel paths

A =2 ( Wave winding )

A=P ( lap winding )

N = Speed or armature r.p.m.( revolution per minute )

Q1. A 4-pole generator, having armature winding has 51 slots, each slot containing 20 conductors.
What will be the voltage wave-wound generated in the machine when driven at 1500 rpm
assuming the flux per pole to be 7.0 milli weber?

Solution:.

Given the values are ,

P =4, number of slots=51, conductors /slot = 20, speed ,N=1500 rpm, flux, Φ =7mWB

Eg = PΦNZ/60A

= [4*7*10-3*(51*20)*1500 ] / (60*2) = 357 volts.

Q.2. An 8-pole d.c. shunt generator with 778 wave-connected armature conductors and running at
500 rpm. Supplies a load of 12.5 ohm resistance at terminal voltage of 250 V. The armature
resistance is 0.24 ohm and the field resistance is 250 ohm. Find the armature current, the
induced emf and flux per pole.

Solution:

P=8, Z= 778, N=500rpm, RL= 12.5 ohm, Vt=250V, Ra=0.24 ohm,Rf=250

Eg = ?, Ia=? and Φ =?

IL=20A
Ia=21A
If=1A
F1
A1 L

G
O
RF=250Ω Vt A
RL=12.5Ω
Ra=0.24Ω A2 D
F2 IL

Eg=255.04V

(i). Armature current, Ia= IL+If

Load current IL, = Vt/RL = 250/ 12.5 = 20 Ampere.

Field current = If= V/Rf = 250/ 250 = 1 Ampere.

, I a= IL+If= 20+1 = 21 Ampere

(ii). Eg = V+IaRa = 250+ 21*0.24 = 255.04 volts.

Eg = PΦNZ/60A

Φ, flux = Eg * 60A / PNZ =( 255.04*60*2) /( 8*500*778)

(iii). Flux per pole, Φ = 9.83 milli weber.
