Daniela Hernandez – Journal Week #4

In week four of my internship, I had the incredible opportunity to accompany individuals

with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) on a nature walk at Rock Eagle. It was a

heartwarming experience witnessing their excitement and joy as we explored the beautiful

natural surroundings.

As we embarked on our nature walk, we pointed out the various plants, animals, and

geological features. Guiding them along the trail, I had the chance to foster a deeper connection

with each individual, engaging in conversations and sharing stories about our shared appreciation

for nature.

This week, I also directed my attention to aiding the individuals in creating a newsletter

using Canva. It was inspiring to witness their creativity and enthusiasm as we worked together to

design a visually appealing and informative newsletter. We collaborated on selecting captivating

images, organizing content, and incorporating accessible formats to ensure the newsletter catered

to a wide range of readers. Although the newsletter is not finished, this is a continuous project

that will aid the individuals at the center with typing skills and media literacy for the future. In

addition to assisting with the newsletter, I also dedicated time to advancing my internship

project. My focus was rendered on calling various individuals to gather information for a vendor

list. Making these phone calls provided valuable insights into effective communication strategies

and professional etiquette. Each conversation contributed to building a comprehensive vendor

list, bringing me one step closer to achieving my project goals. I also dedicated time to reading

literature reviews related to common biases against people with IDD in rural areas, specifically

in Georgia. These readings shed light on the challenges faced by individuals with IDD in

accessing appropriate resources, healthcare, and support systems. It was disheartening to learn
about the persistent misconceptions and barriers that hinder the development of inclusive

environments. However, my project will hopefully aid in such matters. As the week comes to an

end, I reflected on the great opportunity that it is to connect with individuals with IDD and

engage with them in meaningful projects. I look forward to using my experiences to make a

lasting impact in the lives of those with IDD, both now and in the future.
