SECURE DIGITAL CARDS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

1. General

A. The avionics system uses secure digital (SD) cards to store information used during normal operation
and to upload and download data to the G5000 system. Each display unit (DU) has two face-mounted
SD cards slots in the top right corner. The SD card installed in the top slot of the DU is the data loading
card. The SD card installed in the bottom slot of the DU is the database storage card

B. The database gives the avionics system updates of information that changes more frequently than the
software.

2. Description
(See Figure 1.)

A. This section includes the components that follow:

(1) There are 10 possible cards: Software loader, adv wx radar enable (option), SELCAL enable
(option), e-doc enable (option), 3 installed database cards (bottom-standard), and 3 installed user
cards (top-optional).

B. Components
(1) SD Card (Top DU Slot)
(a) The top DU slots are used for SD cards that are temporarily used (for example, when the air-
craft is on the ground) to transfer data on and off the system and for crew profiles. These tem-
porary SD cards do not normally remain in the display during flight. Use of these SD cards
include upload of software and configuration, upload or download of stored flight plans, and
upload of new navigation databases. Automatic integrity checks are done for software, config-
uration, and databases loaded to the system.
(b) An SD card may reside in the top slot during flight when electronic checklists, user electronic
documents are installed, or when an operator desires fixed-content data logging or to do
screen captures. Fixed-content data logging creates a.csv file that contains a fixed set of
defined parameters logged at a rate of 1 Hz. Screen captures create a bit-for-bit representa-
tion of the display unit at the time softkeys 2 and 9 are pushed simultaneously.
(2) SD Cards (Bottom DU Slot)
(a) The bottom DU slots are used for database storage SD cards. Each DU has an SD card
installed in the bottom slot that remains installed in the DU during flight. The stored databases
and other files are used by the avionics system during operation. Integrity checks are also
done on database files to make sure they are not corrupted or missing. Missing or corrupted
files are identified on the relevant DU.

3. Operation

A. The data loading cards (top DU slot) are used to install software, configure the system, and enable fea-
tures. These data loading cards should always remain with the aircraft. Also, additional blank SD cards
need to be available (for example, navigations database updates).
(1) An executable file on the Sandisk SD card contains software for all G5000 baseline LRUs.
(2) The data loading cards display load software to all other LRUs.
(3) The data loading cards contain configuration files for each aircraft option that impact the avionics.
These files include the ones that follow:
(a) Learjet 70 versus Learjet 75
(b) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) versus European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
(c) Oxygen bottle sizes
(d) DME 2
(e) HF
(f) HF 2
(g) ADF
(h) ADF 2
(4) Also, separate data loading cards are used for paid options (for example, upgraded weather
radar.)

B. The database SD cards (bottom DU slot) are used to hold databases as installed equipment. The data-
base storage cards are as follows: Sep 08/14
(1) Terrain
(2) Obstacle
(3) SafeTaxi
(4) ChartView (Jeppesen)
(5) Airport directory
(6) Worldwide basemap
(7) Navigation
(8) Installed Electronic Documents
(9) Supporting files:
(a) Lock features to certain aircraft
(b) Airframe information
(c) Cross-filling data.
(10) Terrain Database
(a) The terrain database is required for the synthetic vision system (SVS) and the terrain aware-
ness and warning system (TAWS). Terrain database coverage is worldwide, and provides
ground elevation with 4.9 arc-second resolution.
(b) The terrain database has no effective or expiration date. Updates are made available via the
internet on an as needed basis.
(11) Obstacle Database
(a) The obstacle database gives identification of known obstacles greater than 200 feet [61 m]
above ground level (AGL). This database is also used by TAWS. Obstacle data is available for
the United States and most of Western Europe. Refer to the TAWS section (34-45-00) for more
information.

(b) There is no time limit to the obstacle database (it is always operative). Updates are available
via the Internet every 56 days.
(12) SafeTaxi Database
(a) SafeTaxi database includes diagrams which provide detailed taxiway, runway, and ramp infor-
mation at more than 900 airports in the United States. By zooming in on an airport that has a
SafeTaxi diagram available, a close-up view of the airport layout shows in detail. The flight
crew can configure the zoom range at which the SafeTaxi data is shown.
(b) When the aircraft location is within the screen boundary, which includes within SafeTaxi
ranges, an airplane symbol shows on any of the navigation map views for enhanced situa-
tional awareness. During ground operation, the aircraft position shows in reference to taxiways
and runways. The SafeTaxi diagrams also give a display of hot spots intersection. These hot
spots are FAA-designated taxi areas that require additional caution and awareness and are
not present at every airport.
(c) There is no time limit to the SafeTaxi database (it is always operative). Updates are available
via the Internet every 56 days.
(13) ChartView Database (Jeppesen)
(a) ChartView (Jeppesen) and FliteCharts (Garmin) databases can not be activated at the same
time.
(b) The ChartView database is similar to the paper version of the Jeppesen terminal procedures
charts. The charts show in full color with high resolution. The MFD depiction shows the aircraft
position on the moving map in the plan view of approach charts and on airport diagrams. Avail-
able data includes:
1) Arrivals (STAR)
2) Departure procedures (DP)
3) Approaches
4) Airport diagrams
5) Notices to airmen (NOTAMs)
6) Charts are geo-referenced (airplane spotter displayed over chart where appropriate).
(c) ChartView database key points:
1) Activation is to be done by original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or service center.
2) The ChartView database is updated by the end user via the Jeppesen database update
process.
3) Activation requires the use of an enable card (010-00330-5X) to be inserted into DU 1 with
all displays powered. Once activated, the unlock card becomes linked to the particular air-
craft.
(d) The ChartView database becomes inoperative 70 days after expiration. Updates are available
via the Internet every 14 days.
(14) Airport Directory Database
(a) The airport directory database is similar to the paper version of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association (AOPA) airport directory. The data is accessed through the airport waypoint pages
and includes detailed supplementary information for airports in the United States. Available
data includes information on:
1) Traffic pattern altitudes
2) Runways (dimensions, surface, and lighting)

3) Airport fixed base operators (FBO) information (for example, fuel types, aircraft mainte-
nance services, rental car, and other services available)
4) Flight service stations (FSS) and weather contacts
5) Navaids serving the airport
6) Nearby lodging and restaurants.
(b) At power-up, the SD cards in the DU 2 search for the airport directory database. The feature is
disabled if the database is not found. The feature is not configurable and cannot be enabled or
disabled by the flight crew.
(c) There is no time limit to the airport directory database (it is always operative). Updates are
available via the Internet every 56 days.
(15) Worldwide Basemap Database
(a) The basemap database gives ground-based references such as roads and bodies of water.
The database can only be updated by getting a new SD card. The basemap does not have a
scheduled update cycle and as such does not have an expiration date.
(16) Navigation Database
(a) The navigation database contains the aeronautical data used by the G5000 system for the
flight management and flight planning functions. Included is detailed data for waypoints, pro-
cedures (arrivals, departures, approaches), and airways. This database update rate is every
28 days. The database can be transferred to the DU with any card, with the card supplied with
a Jeppesen Navigation Database subscription, or via the Jeppesen website.
(b) There is no time limit to the navigation database (it is always operative). Updates are available
via the Internet every 28 days.
