How many levels does a RAW character

take to get 20 Armor Class?

One D&D

So this new monk playtest got me thinking about armor class, specifically the monk’s. With total
investment into Dexterity and Wisdom, they can get a maximum AC of 20. This is a respectable AC, and
comes with the added benefit of boosting your attack rolls and saving throws in the process. But…a lot of
classes can meet or exceed this AC without really trying at all.

So I decided to break down how many levels a character from every class would need to get their AC to
20. Rules as Written only, with point buy or standard array available for stats. Subclasses have been
excluded from consideration, with the exception of Clerics, because a BUNCH of them get heavy armor
proficiency. I’ve also included some racial options at the end.

Alphabetically

Artificer - 2

Barbarian - 4

Bard - 8

Cleric - 1 or 4

Druid - 4

Fighter - 1

Monk - 16

Paladin - 1

Ranger - 4

Rogue - 8
Sorcerer - 12(ish)

Warlock - 8

Wizard - 12(ish)

Fighters, Paladins & several Clerics

1st Level: Full Plate + Shield

Artificers

1st Level: 14 Dexterity + Half Plate + Shield

2nd Level: Infusion - Enhanced Defense OR Repulsion Shield

Barbarians, Druids, Rangers & most Clerics

1st Level: 14 Dexterity + Half Plate + Shield

4th Level Feat: Fighting Initiate:Defense OR Medium Armor Master OR Heavily Armored

Bards, Rogues & Warlocks

1st Level: Light Armor Proficiency

4th Level Feat: Moderately Armored

8th Level Feat: Fighting Initiate:Defense OR Medium Armor Master OR Heavily Armored

Sorcerers & Wizards

1st Level: 14 Dexterity + Mage Armor + Shield Spell (Temporary 20 AC)

4th Level Feat: Lightly Armored

8th Level Feat: Moderately Armored

12th Level Feat: Fighting Initiate:Defense OR Medium Armor Master OR Heavily Armored

Monks

1st Level: Unarmored Defense

4th Level: Wisdom / Dexterity ASI

8th Level: Wisdom / Dexterity ASI

12th Level: Wisdom / Dexterity ASI 16th Level: Wisdom / Dexterity ASI
Racial Options!

Playing a Variant Human or Custom Lineage will reduce the level required for all classes… Except for the
Monk.

Playing a Warforged will reduce the level required for all classes.

Playing a Simic Hybrid will reduce the level required for anyone not opting for heavy armor.

Dwarves can save Sorcerers and Wizards an ASI level.

Verdict Well, I think these results are unsurprising, but man are they glaring when you look at it like this.
Monks are a martial class. With a D8 hit die. And the worst armor class in the game. Evasion and Deflect
Missiles do not make up for this disparity. And there is nothing in One D&D to remotely address this.
There’s a number of ways to fix this, but please, whether you’re a DM or WOTC, don’t ignore it.
