2.4 Aftertreatment Sensors


2.4.1 Aftertreatment Device Sensor Locations

2.4.2 Description and Operation of the SCR Inlet NOx Sensor


The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) inlet NOx sensor (3)measures the amount of NOx in Parts Per Million
(PPM) that enter the SCR.

2.4.3 Removal of the SCR Inlet NOx Sensor

Service Tools Used in the Procedure

1. Shut off the engine, apply the parking brake, chock the wheels, and perform any other applicable safety
steps.

CAUTION
ELECTRICAL SHOCK
To avoid injury from electrical shock, use care when connecting battery cables. The magnetic switch
studs are at battery voltage.
2. Disconnect the batteries. Refer to OEM procedures.
3. If necessary, remove the passenger side fairing. Refer to OEM procedures.
4. Disconnect the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) pressure and DEF return line heater electrical connectors
(located below the DEF dosing unit).

5. Remove the DEF line heater electrical mounting bracket (1).


6. Disconnect the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) inlet NOx sensor Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
electrical connector (5).
7. Remove the two bolts (3) that secure the ECU to the mounting bracket and remove the ECU (2).
8. To help ensure proper installation, note the location of the zip-ties securing the SCR inlet NOx sensor
wiring harness to the ATD.
9. Remove the SCR inlet NOx sensor wiring harness mounting zip-ties.
10. Use a slotted O2 sensor socket to remove the inlet NOx sensor (4) from the ATD.

2.4.4 Inspection of the SCR Inlet NOx Sensor

Inspect as follows:
1. Inspect the inlet NOx sensor for damaged or bent pins. Replace as needed.
2. Inspect the inlet NOx sensor body for cracks or damage. Replace as needed.
3. Inspect the threads of the inlet NOx sensor for damage. Replace as needed.

2.4.5 Installation of the SCR Inlet NOx Sensor

NOTICE
When reusing a NOx sensor, apply a small amount of anti-seize compound to the threads.
Excessive amounts of anti-seize will squeeze out when the sensor is tightened, possibly
contaminating the sensor. New sensors already have a small amount of anti-seize
compound on their threads.

1. Apply anti-seize to the threads of the NOx sensor.

NOTICE
DO NOT over-tighten sensors; damage to threads may occur.

2. Install the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Inlet NOx sensor (4) to the ATD. Use the slotted O2 sensor
socket and torque the NOx sensor to 50 N·m (37 lb·ft).

3. Install the two SCR Electronic Control Unit (ECU) mounting bolts (3) fastening the ECU (2) to the mounting
bracket. Torque the bolts to 12 N·m (9 lb·ft).
4. Connect the SCR Inlet NOx sensor ECU electrical connector (5).
5. Install zip-ties securing the SCR Inlet NOx sensor wire harness to the ATD.
6. Install the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) line heater electrical mounting bracket (1). Torque the bolts to 12
N·m (9 lb·ft).
7. Install the DEF pressure and DEF return line heater electrical connectors.

CAUTION

studs are at battery voltage.
8. Connect the batteries. Refer to OEM procedures.
9. If removed, install the passenger side fairing. Refer to OEM procedures.

2.4.6 Description and Operation of the SCR Outlet NOx Sensor


The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) outlet NOx sensor measures the amount of NOx in Parts Per Million
(PPM) that exits the SCR.

(2) and electrical connector (5).

6. Remove the two bolts (3) that secure the ECU to the mounting bracket and remove the ECU (2).
7. To help ensure proper installation, note the location of the zip ties securing the SCR outlet NOx sensor
wiring harness to the ATD.
8. Remove the SCR outlet NOx sensor wiring harness mounting zip ties.
9. Use a slotted O2 sensor socket and remove the SCR outlet NOx sensor (4) from the ATD.

1. Inspect outlet NOx sensor for damaged or bent pins. Replace as needed.
2. Inspect the outlet NOx sensor body for cracks or damage. Replace as needed.

2.4.9 Installation of the SCR Outlet NOx Sensor

NOTICE

5. Install zip ties securing the SCR outlet NOx sensor wire harness to the ATD.
6. Install the mounting bracket (1).

2.4.10 Description and Operation of the Selective Catalytic Reduction


Inlet Temperature Sensor
The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) inlet temperature sensor (1) measures the temperature of the exhaust
entering the aftertreatment.

2.4.11 Removal of the Selective Catalytic Reduction Inlet Temperature


Sensor
Remove as follows:
1. Shut off engine and apply the parking brake, chock the wheels, and perform any other applicable safety
steps.

CAUTION
ELECTRICAL SHOCK
To avoid injury from electrical shock, use care when connecting battery cables. The magnetic switch
studs are at battery voltage.
2. Disconnect the batteries.
3. If necessary, remove the passenger side fairing. Refer to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
procedures.

4. Disconnect the Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) inlet temperature sensor electrical connector (2) and
remove from the mounting bracket (1).
5. To ensure proper installation, note the location of the zip ties securing the SCR Inlet temperature sensor
wiring harness to the Aftertreatment Device (ATD).
6. Remove the SCR Inlet temperature sensor wiring harness mounting zip ties.
7. Remove the SCR inlet temperature sensor (3) from the ATD.

2.4.12 Inspection of the Selective Catalytic Reduction Inlet


Temperature Sensor
Inspect as follows:
1. Inspect the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) inlet temperature sensor for damaged or bent pins.
Replace as needed.

2. Inspect the SCR inlet temperature sensor body for cracks or damage. Replace as needed.
3. Inspect the threads of the SCR inlet temperature sensor for damage. Replace as needed.

2.4.13 Installation of the Selective Catalytic Reduction Inlet


Temperature Sensor
Install as follows:
1. Apply high temperature anti-seize to the threads of the sensor, but do not allow any to get on the sensor
probe.

NOTICE
DO NOT use excessive amounts, anti-seize will squeeze out during installation. DO NOT
over tighten sensors; damage to threads may occur.

2. Install the Selective Catalyst Reduction (SCR) inlet temperature sensor (3) to the Aftertreatment Device
(ATD). Torque to 35 to 38 N·m (26 to 28 lb·ft).

3. Connect the SCR inlet temperature sensor electrical harness connector (2).
4. Install the SCR inlet temperature sensor wiring harness mounting zip ties.

CAUTION

studs are at battery voltage.
5. Connect the batteries.
6. If removed, install the passenger side fairing. Refer to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) procedures.

2.4.14 Description and Operation of the SCR Outlet Temperature


Sensor

The Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) outlet temperature sensor measures the temperature of the SCR outlet.

2.4.15 Removal of the SCR Outlet Temperature Sensor


Remove as follows:
1. Shut off engine and apply the parking brake, chock the wheels, and perform any other applicable safety
steps.

remove from the mounting bracket.

5. To ensure proper installation, note the location of the zip ties securing the SCR outlet temperature sensor
wiring harness to the ATD.
6. Remove the SCR outlet temperature sensor wiring harness mounting zip ties.
7. Remove the SCR outlet temperature sensor (1) from the ATD.

2.4.16 Inspection of the SCR Outlet Temperature Sensor

1. Inspect the SCR outlet temperature sensor for damaged or bent pins. Replace as needed.
2. Inspect the SCR outlet temperature sensor body for cracks or damage. Replace as needed.

2.4.17 Installation of the SCR Outlet Temperature Sensor


Install as follows:
