What is Ecumenical/General Council?
An ecumenical or general council is a meeting of bishops of the
whole church to discuss and settle matters of Church doctrine
and practice.
The 21
Ecumenical
Councils of the
Church
First Council of Nicaea (325)
condemned Arianism, which denied the divinity of
Christ, defined the consubstantiality of the Father and
the Son; fixed the date for Easter; began formulation of
Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed.
Ended the Great Schism, which involved three rival claimants to the papacy;
opposed the teachings of John Wycliffe, who taught sola scriptura, denied
the authority of the pope and bishops, denied the Real Presence of Christ in
the Eucharist, and wrote against penance and indulgences; condemned as a
heretic John Huss, who denied papal authority and taught wrongly about the
nature of the Church and who was burned at the stake in 1415
