PROJECT 1: Building Case Study Report (20%)

Select a significant building in Sri Lanka (administrative building, public building, retail, learning
institution, manufacturing, residential, etc.) that belongs to any historical era relevant to the study.

a) Explain why and how it is significant.


b) How has local technology, materials, climatic conditions, history, culture and beliefs influenced the
design of this building?

Study the function of the building type to serve the community within its vicinity. From your
observations on site, identify the different architectural elements (exterior and interior) that have been
adapted to best serve the practical and functional needs of the local community as compared to the
similar building type found in another region. The students have to be resourceful at site; Conduct
interviews, library research, photography, sketches and drawings to record your findings.

Journal Format:
Neatly typed 3500 – 4000 words (5-10 pages) ; 1.5 spacing
Report format with proper referencing
A4 bounded

PROJECT 2: Critical analysis of historical periods in Sri Lanka (20%)


Group Work – 4 Groups

Task:
Students are expected to work in 4 groups and study the given topics to research for the following:
a) Background information (briefly discuss the socio-cultural, political, economic background of the
period)
b) Architectural significance (important structures)
c) Visualize/ imagine how few selected buildings looked like and was used in the past (sketches/
perspectives, 3D images, etc. with finishes, textures, colours, details, etc.)

Topics:
1. Anuradhapura Kingdom
2. Polannaruwa Kingdom
3. West-ward kingdoms (Dambadeniya to Kotte)
4. Kandyan kingdom

Submission requirements:
Use any technique to effectively communicate important information (power point, models, role play,
drama, Poster, etc.).
Time: max 30 minutes per group

PROJECT 3: Colonial Influences & Post Independence (20%)


Group Work – 4 Groups

Task:
Students are expected to work in 4 groups and study the given topics to research for the following:
a) Background information (briefly discuss the socio-cultural, political, economic background)
b) Architectural significance (important structures)
c) Essence of the style/period/development (Poster)

Topics:
1. Sri Lanka under Portuguese
2. Sri Lanka under Dutch
3. Sri Lanka under British
4. Post Independence

Submission requirements:
Use any technique to effectively communicate important information (power point, models, role play,
drama, etc.).
Poster/ body art/model- Graphically compose the conclusions drawn above, on to an A2 size poster and
work on a body posture/ other creative way of conveying the abstracted quality of the allocated
period/development
Time: max 30 minutes per group

PROJECT 4: Colonial Buildings of Sri Lanka (20%)


Group Work – max. 5 members per group

A building is to be selected according to the building typology assigned. The students are to photograph
& sketch the selected building and its ambient context. The following information is to be gathered &
presented:
1. Name of the building
2. Alternative names
3. Province and District
4. Address
5. Original use
6. Present use

Submission requirements: Verbal Presentation with A3 panels supported by a power point presentation.
All group members are to contribute to the verbal presentation

PROJECT 5: Film Review (10%)


Individual – 4 Groups

Task: Students are to write a review on a given film, considering how the film portrays the given era’s
socio cultural, economic & architectural aspects.

PROJECT 6: Asian Regional Identity (10%)


Group Work – 4 Groups
Date of Introduction: 21.11.2013

Task:
a) Students are expected to research on the socio-cultural, political and architectural aspects of the
following Asian regions:
1. North Asia
2. South Asia
3. West Asia
4. East Asia
b) Discuss on the collected information, summarize and abstract the qualities of each Asian region
c) Graphically compose the conclusions drawn above, on to an A2 size poster and work on a body
posture/ other creative way of conveying the abstracted quality of the allocated style

Submission requirements:
A2 Poster/ verbal explanation (Power point presentation)
Creative body art movement presentation (20 min.s max)
