Indian Textiles Sector
Overview
India is one of the world's largest producers of Textiles and Apparel.
The domestic textiles and apparel industry contributes 2.3% to India’s GDP and accounts for
13% of industrial production, and 12% of the country’s export earnings.
The textiles and apparel industry in India has strengths across the entire value chain from
fiber, yarn, fabric to apparel. It is highly diversified with a wide range of segments ranging from
products of traditional handloom, handicrafts, wool and silk products to the organized textile
industry. The organized textile industry is characterized by the use of capital-intensive
technology for mass production of textile products and includes spinning, weaving, processing,
and apparel manufacturing.
Fabrics: Indian textile fabrics sector is highly fragmented, very few have integrated operations.
Besides it contains a lot of companies operate in small
scale and tiny units. However, there is a long network
which are tightly integrated to produce the varied
demands. Some of them have grown in this fashion
due to the patronage of government initiatives like
reservation of certain categories in textile sector.
Besides, in yester year’s embroidery and other
handiworks are best suitable for small sector.
However, fabric sector is capital intensive and over the years, many textile companies have set
up integrated operations to make some of best textiles. India is also known for cotton fabrics
and is specialized in printed cotton fabrics, lycra and knitted fabrics
Garments: India is the second largest garment producer in the world. It has recently replaced
Germany & Turkey to reach the spot. Garment forms
45% of overall textile trade and is facing stiff
competition from Bangladesh, Vietnam and China.
Though India is the second largest textile exporter, it
lags well behind China, whose exports are nearly
seven times higher.
India’s Garment Industry has been rapidly
growing in last few years. Exports have been rising as there is an increase in orders from global
buyers accompanied by a rise of investments in modernization in the garment sector of the

country. It is a key industry as it contributes substantially to India’s export earning, it is believed

that one out of every six households in the country depends on this sector either indirectly or
directly for its livelihood.

The garment industry today can provide employment to additional 1.5 million people and Apparel Export Promotion
Council (AEPC) is expected to set up 50 training centre to impart skills. Currently, AEPC has 22 centres

Technical Textiles: Technical Textiles are materials like diapers, fire resistant materials with unique functional properties
which has a huge untapped potential in India. Its market size is
projected at USD 11 billion in with a projected growth rate of
15%.

To tap the potential, Ministry of Textiles have implemented

several schemes. It has established Four Centres of Excellence
(CoE) i.e., BTRA for Geotextiles, SASMIRA for Agro textiles,
NITRA for Protective Textiles and SITRA for Medical Textiles.
These Centre of Excellence provide infrastructure support in
terms of facilities for testing with national and international accreditation, development of resource centre with I.T.
infrastructure, facilities for training, prototype development, standards development on technical textiles, etc.
Ministry of Textiles also launch programmes from time to time to create awareness among entrepreneurs. So far more
than 60 Seminars / Workshops / Training programmes were organized by Office of Textile Commissioner across the
country.

In continuation to its efforts, Scheme for Promoting the Usage of Agro textiles in North East Region was launched with a
financial outlay of INR 550 million. Further, the Scheme for Promoting the Usage of Geotextiles in North East Region with
a financial outlay of INR 427 crores is under finalization.

Yarns & Threads: Indian Spinning Industry is the most modern and efficient in the world. With 51 Million Spindles and
0.75 Mn Open-End Rotors, India has the world’s second largest spinning capacity, commanding a greater share of the
global Cotton Yarn market. It is currently producing over 4700 million kgs of spun yarn of which over 5,500 Mn.Kgs is
cotton yarn. Cotton Yarn accounts for nearly 73% of total spun yarn production.

India produces a comprehensive range of yarns for every conceivable end use – non-spun or open-end; combed or
carded, basic, compact, mélange or fancy. India’s 1943 spinning mills produce them all for requirements ranging from a
fine 200 count to a coarse 2 count.
 Indian Textiles Sector

With more companies modernizing their mills with state-of-the-art

technology, Indian cotton yarn markets is set to boost its export potential.
The world’s most renowned Indian Cotton Yarns are available as greige,
bleached, mercerized, gassed, twisted, dyed or an endless range of
fashion yarns like mélange, stretch, blends, high twist and so on to meet
the different applications in fashion, clothing, home textiles, hosiery and
industrial fabrics. India can meet every customer requirement whether
large or small, regular or customized, premium or basic.

Indian yarn spinners have inducted technologies like compact spinning,

using the most advanced yarn – processing technology and high-precision process controls tools like electronic cleaners,
auto slavers, splicers, two-for-one twisters and auto-coners give Indian mills a competitive advantage.

Today, Indian yarn is widely accepted in International markets as the exporters here regularly meet the needs of importers
with unmatched efficiency.

China is the largest importer of yarns from India. Prices of major raw materials like purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and
mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) have major influences on yarns markets and prices, besides crude market – which is the
fundamental key raw material.

India government has acted on various times to impose anti-dumping duty on polyester staple fibre imports to protect the
sector in India. The Directorate General of Anti-dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD), under the commerce ministry provides
advice to Government of India

AICIL, incorporated in 1873, was taken over by the Kolkata-based Wadhwa group from James Finlay &
Co., U.K in 1967. Over the years, AICIL has expanded its capacity through organic and inorganic route.
