AIR POLLUTION IN INDIA

Air pollution in India is a serious health issue. Of the 69 most polluted cities in the
world, 21 were in India in 2019.As per a study based on 2016 data, at least 140
million people in India breathe air that is 10 times or more over the WHO safe limit
and 13 of the world's 20 cities with the highest annual levels of air pollution are in
India. The 51% of pollution is caused by the industrial pollution, 27 % by vehicles,
17% by crop burning and 5% by fireworks. Air pollution contributes to the
premature deaths of 2 million Indians every year. Emissions come from vehicles and
industry, whereas in rural areas, much of the pollution stems from biomass burning
for cooking and keeping warm.

India’s air pollution problem needs to be tackled systematically, taking an all-of-

government approach, to reduce the huge burden of associated ill-health.

Some of the things India is doing One,replace existing cook stoves with clean cook stoves,
two, reduce pollution from diesel transport and, three, restrict open burning of biomass
and fossil fuels. Meanwhile, liquid petroleum gas and electricity, along with biogas and
ethanol are some of the clean energy alternatives.
Asia's most polluted cities
Of the world's most polluted 30 cities, 22 are in India, according to research by IQ
AirVisual, a Swiss-based group that gathers air-quality data globally, and Greenpeace.
The remaining eight cities are all in Pakistan, Bangladesh and China - but the list doesn't
include Beijing, which comes in at number 122.
Just looking at global capitals, it's also Asian cities that top the ranking.

Looking at overall countries, it's Bangladesh that has the worst air, followed by Pakistan
and then India.
All these rankings are based on average air quality per year.
As these countries have very different densities of measuring stations and transparency of
data, the statistics have to be read with a degree of caution. But they certainly indicate an
overall trend.

In conclusion we can see that the the main sources contributing to air pollution are well
identified and this list is common for all Indian cities – vehicle exhaust, heavy industry
including power generation, small scale industries including brick kilns, resuspended
dust on the roads due to vehicle movement and construction activities,
