5. Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, has released the
5th State Food Safety Index (SFSI), which evaluates the performance of states and union
territories across six different aspects of food safety.
• Among the larger states, Kerala has topped the index, followed by Punjab and Tamil
Nadu.
• Among the smaller states, Goa has emerged as the leader, followed by Manipur and
Sikkim.

6. The brand valuation firm Brand Finance has released its INDIA 100 2023: The annual report
on the most valuable and strongest Indian brands- June 2023 report in which the Tata
Group has retained its 1st position as the most valued brand in India at USD 26,381 million in
2023.
Infosys has retained the second spot in the rankings with a brand value of USD 13 billion. It
is followed by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) with a value of USD 9.7 billion.
Among the banks, the State Bank of India (SBI) has the highest brand value of USD 7.33
billion. It is followed by HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank.
Raymond has emerged as the most valuable clothing brand in India with an 83.2 percent rise
in brand value to $273 million.
7. A recent study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research–India Diabetes (ICMR-
INDIAB) states that India now has over 101 million people living with diabetes compared to
70 million people in 2019.
Around 136 million people (15.3% of the population) have pre-diabetes, and over 315 million
people have high blood pressure.
The study has been published in the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal.
• The study has shown that Goa has the highest population of diabetic patients is over 26.4
percent of the population, and the lowest prevalence in Uttar Pradesh with over 4.8
percent.
• Goa is followed by Puducherry with 26.3%, and Kerala with 25.5% of the cases.
8. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as India’s fourth largest investor in the
fiscal year 2022-23 following the successful implementation of the Comprehensive Economic
Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries on 1st May 2022.

9. Australia-based Rights group Walk Free Foundation has released the Global Slavery Index
2023, an assessment of modern slavery conditions in 160 countries. As per the index, around
50 million people globally were living in conditions of modern slavery in 2021, a 25% rise over
the last 5 years.
• Among the G20 nations, India has topped the list with 11 million people working as
forced labourers, followed by China, Russia, Indonesia, Turkiye, and the United States of
America (USA).
10. According to the latest data from MyGovIndia, India has topped the global rankings in
digital payments for the year 2022 with 89.5 million digital transactions.
As per the data, India has accounted for 46 percent of the global real-time payments in the
year 2022.
India is followed by Brazil with 29.2 million transactions, China with 17.6 million transactions,
Thailand with 16.5 million digital transactions, and South Korea with 8 million transactions.
11. The National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation
(MoSPI), has released its 18th quarterly Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) bulletin for
January-March 2023 (Q4FY23).
Key findings:
• India’s urban unemployment rate (UR) in Current Weekly Status (CWS) terms for persons
aged 15 years and above has declined to 6.8% during Q4FY23 from 7.2% in Q3FY23.
• The highest UR has been seen in Himachal Pradesh (15.2%), followed by Chhattisgarh
12. As per the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation’s payroll reporting data analysis, 1.39
crore people found new formal jobs in India in FY23. This is a 13 percent increase
compared to FY22.
• Maharashtra has topped with a 15 percent increase in formal jobs in FY23.
• Tamil Nadu is in second place, with 14.05 net new payroll additions in FY23.
• Karnataka, Haryana, and Gujarat have bagged the third, fourth and fifth positions,
respectively.
• The 22-25 age group has bagged the most jobs at 36.24 lakh.
13. As per the latest data released by the Union Government, India’s growth rate for FY23 has
been projected at 7.2% as compared to 9.1% GDP growth in FY22.
Manufacturing sector has grown by 1.3 percent in FY23 after growing 11.1 percent in FY22
while agriculture, forestry and fishing has grown at 4 percent in FY23 against 3.5 percent
growth seen in the fiscal before.
The Indian economy GDP growth in Q4 FY23 (January to March 2023) is projected at 6.1%
year-on-year (YoY) when compared to the 4.5% growth in Q3 FY23 and 4% in FY22.
14. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), in partnership with the Indian G20
Presidency, has launched a comprehensive report titled “Low-cost finance for energy
transition”. The report has praised India’s achievement in rolling out renewable energy
capacity.
The report is developed in collaboration with India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy
(MNRE).
The report provides a toolbox to increase the availability of low-cost capital in G20 countries
and beyond.
Key highlights of the report:
• India ranked third on the Renewable Energy Attractive Index in 2021 and India’s solar and
• India’s renewable energy sector growth is being driven by national targets of 175 GW of
renewable energy capacity by 2022 and 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
• The report mentioned sovereign green bonds as a next logical step to showcase India’s
sustainable development and lower the cost of capital for green projects by tapping into
new investors.

2021-22’ which covers NHAI’s governance structure, stakeholders, environment and social
responsibility initiatives.
• NHAI has continuously been using recycled materials (Recycled Asphalt and Recycled
• NHAI has increased the utilization of certain materials (like, Copper slag, Fly Ash, Steel
slag, Cold Asphalt Mix) in road construction for ensuring sustainability and reducing
environmental footprints.
• More than 100 Wildlife crossings were created in 3 years across 20 states.

17. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu) has emerged as India’s highest-
placed university in the ‘Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings 2023’. It has been
ranked 52nd in the world for tackling some of the biggest global challenges.
Western Sydney University in Australia has topped the overall ranking for the second year
in a row, followed by the University of Manchester in the UK and Queen’s University in
Canada

CII has also projected India’s GDP to grow in Q4 FY23 by 6.1%, with an annual growth rate of
FY23 at 7.2 percent.
India’s GDP growth is expected to increase to 7.8% in the next decade (FY22-31) as compared
to 6.6% in the previous decade.
20. As per the data released by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), the fiscal deficit
target in FY23 has been reduced to 6.36% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) against 6.4% in
the revised estimates(RE) due to lower-than- estimated revenue expenditure.
Fiscal deficit for FY23 is at Rs.17.33 trillion, or 98.7% of the RE of Rs.17.55 trillion due to the
reduction in higher tax, non-tax revenue collections and non-debt capital receipts.
The net tax revenue in FY23 reached marginally higher (by 0.5%) at Rs.20.97 trillion than the
RE of Rs.20.86 trillion.
The non-tax revenues for FY23 are at Rs.2.86 trillion, or nearly 9.3% higher than the RE.
21. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has released a report titled “Bridging the
Gender Digital Divide: Challenges and an Urgent Call for Action for Equitable Digital
Skills Development”.

25. The 2nd edition of “National Manufacturing Innovation Survey (NMIS) 2021-22: Summary

• Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu have the highest share of innovative firms at
46.18% ,39.10% and 31.90%, respectively, with Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand reporting the
lowest share of such firms at 12.78%, 13.47% and 13.71%, respectively.
• Uttarakhand (31.72) has the highest score among the hill states, while DNH&DD has the
highest score among the UTs.
26. An annual report named Global Report on Food Crises 2023 has been published by the
Global Network against Food Crises (GNAFC). The report is the flagship publication of the
GNAFC and is facilitated by the Food Security Information Network (FSIN).
• Around 258 million people in 58 countries and territories faced acute food insecurity in
2022.
• The key drivers are: Economic shocks (including due to COVID-19 and Ukraine War),

28. A new report titled ‘The Race to Net Zero: Accelerating Climate Action in Asia and the
Pacific’ has been released by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
(ESCAP).
The report provides an outline of regional context of climate change and identifies actions
that could be taken to support global climate agenda.
Key highlights
• As per the report, over the past sixty years, warming in Asia and Pacific has exceeded the
global mean.
• Across the region, average annual economic losses caused by natural and biological
• Asia- Pacific regions' greenhouse gas emissions have more than doubled between 1990
and 2020.

29. Fitch Ratings has lowered India’s 2023-24 Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast to
6% from 6.2%, citing headwinds from elevated inflation and interest rates along with
subdued global demand.
The projection for FY25 has also decreased to 6.7% as opposed to 6.9% projected earlier.
India’s FY24 growth will be slower than the 7% expected in FY23, as weak domestic and global
demand is induced.
31. As per the recently released report by the aviation analytical firm Cirium, GMR Hyderabad
International Airport has become the most punctual airport in the world.
• The report has recorded 90.43 percent On-Time Performance, for the month of March
2023.
• Hyderabad airport has topped the charts both in the ‘Global Airports’ and ‘Large Airports’
categories.
32. The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched its first-ever comprehensive
framework on reducing anaemia, calling on countries to accelerate action to reduce anaemia
prevalence in women of reproductive age by 2025.
Anaemia:
It is a serious global public health problem, affecting 571 million women and 269 million
young children worldwide.
In 2019, anaemia affected 40% of children between 6 months and 5 years of age, 37% of
pregnant women, and 30% of women 15 – 49 years of age.
It is most prevalent in low- and middle-income countries.
This marks a growth of over 12 percent compared to FY 2021-22 when the value of defence
production was Rs.95,000 crore.
The current value stands at Rs.1,06,800 crore and is expected to rise further as data is
received from additional private defence industries.
Note: MoD has set a target of achieving a turnover of USD 25 billion (Rs 1.75 lakh crore) in
defence manufacturing by 2024-25, including an export target of USD 5 billion (Rs 35,000
crore) worth of military hardware.
34. The United Nations (UN) has released a report titled as “World Economic Situation and
Prospects”. As per the report, India is expected to grow by 5.8 percent in 2023 and 6.7
percent in 2024. The growth will be supported by resilient domestic demand.
The report stated that inflation in India is expected to decelerate to 5.5 percent in 2023 with
the moderation of global commodity prices and slower currency depreciation.
World economy: It is projected to grow by 2.3 percent in 2023 and 2.5 percent in 2024.
35. India’s Ultra-High-Net Worth Individuals (UHNWI) are estimated to increase 58.4% in the
next 5 years from 12,069 in 2022 to 19,119 individuals in 2027. This is according to the report
titled “The Wealth Report 2023” published by Knight Frank.
• In 2022, India’s billionaire population grew to 161 individuals from 145 the previous year,
and it is projected to reach 195 individuals by 2027.
• The population of high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) in India, with assets valued at USD 1
million or more, increased to 797,714 last year from 763,674 in 2021.
• It is anticipated that the number of HNIs will reach 1,657,272 by 2027.
36. The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has released a report namely ‘Most Innovative
Companies 2023: Reaching New Heights in Uncertain Times’ showcasing top 50
companies in 2023.
• In this list, Tata Group is the only Indian firm to be featured at 20th position.
• Notably, tech companies continue to dominate the top 50, including the top 10,
international energy companies hold five spots in 2023 list amid concerns over climate
change.
37. World Bank has published its annual report ‘State and Trends of Carbon Pricing 2023’. The
report states that revenues collected from carbon taxes and Emissions Trading Systems (ETS)
globally have reached a record high, about USD 95 billion in 2022 despite the challenging
context for governments facing high inflation, fiscal pressures, and energy crises.
As per the report, there are currently 73 global carbon pricing instruments in operation,
compared with 68 in May 2022.
The 73 Carbon Pricing initiatives covered 11.66 GtCO2e (gigatonnes of carbon dioxide
equivalent), representing 23% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
38. World Bank has released a report titled “Thriving: Making Cities Green, Resilient, and
Inclusive in a Changing Climate” that provides guidance to local and national policymakers
on how to create greener, more resilient, and inclusive cities.
39. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO), World
Bank Group have released a report titled- “Levels and trends in child malnutrition: Joint
Child Malnutrition Estimates (JME)”, stating that in 2020, 18.7 % of Indian children were
affected by Wasting caused by poor nutrient intake.
Key findings:
• According to estimates, around 45 million children under 5 (6.8%) suffered from wasting

Brazil has secured fourth place with 0.08°C of warming.
42. As per the latest data by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), India's
unemployment rate has increased to 7.8 percent in March 2023 from 7.45% in February
2023. The unemployment rate was at 7.14% in January 2023.

with skills that match with demand, distressed migrants, and refugees.

65. A new report titled as ‘Indian States’ Energy Transition’ has been published by the Institute
for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) along with EMBER. The report has
analysed 16 states, which together account for 90% of India’s annual power requirement.
Electricity Transition refers to the shift from fossil-based power production and consumption
to renewable energy sources (RES) like wind and solar.
66. As per the recent data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), India’s
unemployment rate has increased to 7.45% in February 2023 from 7.14% in January 2023.
• The urban unemployment rate has declined to 7.93 percent in February from 8.55 percent
in January 2023, while the rural unemployment rate has increased to 7.23 percent from
6.48 per cent.
• Haryana has the highest unemployment rate among the states with 29.4%, followed by
Rajasthan (28.3%) and Sikkim (21.0%).
• Chhattisgarh has the lowest unemployment rate among the states with 0.8%, followed by
Madhya Pradesh (2.0%) and Odisha (2.1%).
67. The National Statistical Office (NSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme
Implementation (MoSPI), has released India's gross domestic product (GDP) data for the
October-December 2022 quarter (Q3FY23).
• As per the data, India’s GDP has slowed down to 4.4% in the third quarter of 2022-23 i.e.
October and December 2022 (Q3FY23) due to contraction in the manufacturing sector. It
was 6.3% in Q2FY23.
• The growth in nominal GDP at current price during FY23 is estimated at 15.9 percent as
compared to 18.4 percent in FY22.
NSO, in sds second advance estimate of national accounts, has pegged India's growth at 7%
for 2022-23, same as that pegged by the first advanced estimates that was released in
January 2023. It has also revised the GDP growth for 2021-22 to 9.1% against the earlier
estimate of 8.7%.
68. Global credit rating agency Moody’s Investors Service (MIS) has increased India's GDP
growth estimate from 4.8% to 5.5% for 2023. This upward revision is made in light of a strong
increase in capital expenditure in the Budget 2023-24.
The report states that 31 Indian states have implemented the national 'PM CARES for
Children' scheme launched during the pandemic with 10,793 full orphans (children who have
lost both parents) and 151,322 half-orphans (children who have lost one parent) due to the
pandemic taking the benefit of the scheme.
The report warns that an additional 50 million children aged 0-15 missed out on a critical
social protection provision – specifically, child benefits (paid in cash or tax credits) – between
2016 and 2020, driving up the total to 1.46 billion children under 15 globally.

2023: Defiance in the Face of Autocratization,” India has been ranked 97th in the Liberal

76. Swiss firm IQAir has released the 5th edition of the World Air Quality Report 2022. As per
the report, Lahore (Pakistan) has become the city with the worst air in the world in 2022,
(up from 15th in 2021). Lahore's PM2.5 level used to be 86.5 in 2021; it went to 97.4
micrograms per cubic meter in 2022.
Lahore is followed by Hotan (China), Bhiwadi (India), Delhi (India), and Peshawar (Pakistan).
Chad in central Africa replaced Bangladesh as the country with the most polluted air in 2022

Indicator Survey (MIS) for the first time to collect information for developing estimates of
some important Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) indicators and to collect information
about purchase/construction of house(s)/flat(s) for residential purposes after 3rd March 2014

• A total of 29.3 % persons aged 15-24 years are not in education, employment or training.

83. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in its latest interim
outlook released titled “Fragile Recovery” has raised India's FY24 growth forecast by 20 basis
points to 5.9% from 5.7% earlier.

98. World Bank has released a report titled “Striving for Clean Air: Air Pollution and Public
Health in South Asia”. The report uses Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollution Interactions and
Synergies (GAINS) model to quantify particulate matter (PM) emissions and how they
disperse in atmosphere.
Highlights of report:
