Laterite soil
Soil is collected from Rajahmundry, East Godavari district .This type of soil is widely
available in region of Aluva and greatly used for road construction. Even though this soil
has a tendency to achieve strength with time, literature studies showed that these soil could
exhibit higher strength characteristic upon stabilization
Methodology
One of the significant problems that have faced when discussing soft soils is adsorbed water around
the soil particles. Terrazyme is capable of reducing or eliminating the thickness of the adsorbed
water layer present in the soil. It can increase the cohesive property of the soil and compaction
behaviour of the soil. The tendency to penetrate water through the voids were reduced, and the
swelling-shrinkage response also gets reduced in the presence of terrazyme . Conceiving the
above concept of Raul Velasquez, Marasteanu, and Ray Hozalski (2005), a schematic
representation of the process is illustrated in Figures 8 and 9. Figure 9 shows the mechanism
behind the effect of terrazyme on the reduction of adsorbed water layer thickness.
With the addition of a particular amount of terrazyme into the soil (negatively charged
colloidal particles of fine-grained soil), a change in the adsorbed water layer surrounding the
clay particles occurs. The adsorbed water contains metal ions with a positive charge such as
sodium, potassium, aluminium, magnesium, etc. Primarily water molecules are dissociated into
hydrogen ions (+) and hydroxyl ions (-), the former may again combine with water molecules
to form hydronium ions, as shown in Figure 8. The positive charges from hydronium ions (+)
or hydroxyl ions (-) combine with positively charged metal ions present in adsorbed water.
Reduction in the electric charge of water molecules, pressure from negatively charged ions on
positively charged metal ions in adsorbed water were observed due to the effect of Terrazyme
addition. The metal ions are forced to move towards the free water from the adsorbed water
layer and thereby break down of the electrostatic barrier occurs. The metal ions moved to the
free water can be reduced or removed due to washing off/evaporation. This process will make
the soil structure to a more friable matrix with an adsorbed water layer of thinner one.
Construction procedure
Step-1
Scarifying the soil suface
Step-2
Calculating the quantity of enzyme
Step-3
Adding enzyme and spraying it into the soil
Step-4
Mixing soil, metal and enzymes
Step-5
Levels and camber and rolling the treated surface
Step-6
Finished road surface
Conclusion;
• Usage of terrazyme increases strength of soil which is
known by the increase in CBR values.
• Terrazyme is a non-toxic and biodegradable liquid. It’s eco-
friendly and does not pose any harm to the user.
• It’s an ideal solution for quality roads with a cost saving
feature.
• It decreases the soil permeability and makes soil water
resistance.
