ISTE Technology Standard Addressed:  What would you like students to know and be
Innovative Designer – 1.4 – Students use a variety able to do by the end of this lesson: The
of technologies within a design process to identify students should be able to read a text and
and solve problems by creating new, useful or answer the following questions, who, what,
imaginative solutions. when, where and why about the text. This is
important for them to recognize and understand
key details.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea? The student learning goal for this lesson
idea is for the student to be create a podcast where they write their own story about whatever
they want. They will need to make sure that their story has a plot line that includes who, what,
when, where and why statements that can then be asked as questions to their classmates.

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

The student will be put with partners and they will work together to create their own story. Their
story must have a plot line that includes the following, who, what, when, where and why. Once
the students have created their story, they will use Spotify for Podcasters to create a podcast of
them reading their story. They will then pair up with another pair of partners where each group
will share their podcasts and have the other group try and answer the questions. This is a great
way for students to work together on not only creating a story and using their imagination, but
also making sure that they understand key details in texts and how to figure out how to find the
who, what, when, where and why in a story.
I will start out by reading a story to the students followed up with questions about said story. I will
ask the questions who, what, when, where, and why the story was about. We will discuss how
they came to their conclusions and what types of key words they looked for in order to help them
find the answer. I will then pair them up and send them on their way to complete the assignment
of creating their own story, recording it and sharing with another set of partners. I will be walking
around the class and answering any questions that they may have.
Managing student learning:
This lesson will cause a shift in the behavior of students where they move from passive to active social
learners. This is because students will first learn about key words in texts that help them figure out the five W
questions, and then they will create their own story. Because of this, students are having to work together
with a partner and use their imagination and what they have learned to create their own story from scratch.
In order to stay on task, I will set a time limit for the different stages of this lesson. They will have 25 minutes
to work with their partner on creating a story and getting it recorded. They will then have 10 more minutes
to share with another group. This gives them enough time to work together but not too much time that they
end up getting off topic and distracted.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
This activity and the technology tool support all students in multiple different ways. This lesson
allows students to be creative and use their imagination to build their own story. They can pick
whatever topic they want to write their story on and it allows for them to express themselves and
their interests. By using the Spotify for Podcasters, they are being introduced to new technology and
a different and exciting way of learning. Instead of taking a test and just memorizing the information,
the students are able to create something of their own which will really show their understanding of
the standard.

Reflection:
I feel like the activity that I have created will impact student learning in multiple ways. The most
important being that it is giving students their own creative freedom to show what they have
learned. It also adds to their own personal portfolio on how to use Spotify for Podcasters which is a
great tool that they can use for the rest of their academic career. I look forward to listening and
seeing what kinds of stories the students write about.
