PAD253 – MANJUNG MUNICIPAL COUNCIL

INTRODUCTION

Seri Manjung is a capital city and district, namely Manjung District in the state of Perak,
Malaysia. It is a city that was developed by the Perak State Government under the Perak
State Development Corporation in the 1980s. It is located 7 km from Lumut and 70 km from
the capital, Ipoh. It is also located next to the northern area of Seri Manjung is Sitiawan.

Before 1973, this area was called Dindings. Formerly part of the Straits Settlements under
the administration of Penang. The Dindings District became part of the Pangkor
Engagement (also known as the Pangkor Agreement), signed by Britain and the British
appointed the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Abdullah, in January 1874. The treaty was signed to
stop the bloodshed caused by two major events, fighting for the throne between relatives the
Perak royal family after the death of Sultan Ali and the Chinese tribal war between Ghee Hin
and Hai San to seize the tin mining area at the end of the Taiping occupation.

Manjung, Kawasan Tembok or Wilayah is one of the territories under the rule of the Straits
Settlements. A ceremony to sign an agreement was held to return the Dinding District to the
Perak State Government. It took place on 16 February 1935 in front of the Lumut Rest
House. The treaty required the Sultan of Perak to hand over the Dindings to the British,
accept the British Resident, Sir JWW Birch, and the appointment of an Assistant Resident in
Taiping, Captain Tristram Speedy. Sultan Ismail will resign from the throne of Perak.

In relation to that, in conjunction with the event, the name of Dinding District was changed to
Iskandar Regency and Tanah Merah (Lumut) was changed to Iskandar Port. The Sultan of
Perak at that time had appointed Raja Shahriman bin Raja Abdul Hamid as the "Great Man
of the Colony".

Apart from that, as one of the signs to commemorate the event, the Al-Adli Mosque was built
in the area of Bandar Lumut. It aims to express gratitude for the return of Dinding District to
the Perak State Government. Until the 1980s, the district was still also known as the Wall
District. On January 1, 1982, Dinding district was converted into Manjung Regency which
consists of administrative units including Beruas and Sitiawan areas.
