-REVISION NOTICE-

Added part number of RTD Sealant 730, 953676C1

PURPOSE:
To communicate a solution for units experiencing lube oil migration into the bearing #1 RTDs
junction box.

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Several units have experienced lube oil migration into the gas turbine bearing #1 RTDs junction box.
The oil migration is due to the RTD cable “dams” not being properly located into the sealing grommet.
The pictures below show an example of an oil flooded RTD junction box and dam not properly inserted
in the grommet.

The oil migration can represent a safety risk if allowed to migrate into the electrical system.

Leaked Oil Cable dams not
properly located

Follow all locally- and employer-required risk mitigation practices

before starting any work.

Perform a normal system shutdown, allow equipment to coast down

to a complete stop, and allow the post-lubrication cycle to
automatically stop.

Follow appropriate hazardous energy control procedures, (lock-out

and tag-out (LOTO)) for the turbomachinery package, ancillaries,
and associated equipment as appropriate to the task and LOTO
procedure.

Isolate the package from all sources of fuel and start gas (dependent
on requirements to crank the engine) including any start gas
exhaust system or vent system.

Allow surfaces in the proximity of the work area to cool adequately

to eliminate any burn hazard to personnel.

Combustible gases or vapors may be present. Isolate nonessential

sources of ignition. Ensure gases or vapors are reduced to a safe
level before resuming work.

ACTION REQUIRED:

Inspect the bearing #1 RTD junction box. The pictures below show examples of typical junction
boxes installed on T250 Packages.

If oil is found inside the box, order the following parts:

 Shrink tube - PN 955090C1 (Qty 1)
 Grommet seal - PN 124907-14 (Qty 1)
 Compression ring - PN 954138C1 (Qty 1)
 RTD Sealant 730 – P/N 953676C1 (Qty 1)

Additional material needed:

 Syringe (for injecting sealant)
 Heat gun

Once all the material is available and when applicable, obtain a Permit To Work and using the
appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), perform the following at the earliest
convenience:

NOTE: When using the heat gun, continual gas monitoring must be done when the
activities are taking place at a customer site.

 Measure from conduit elbow (AGB) to end of lower “dam”

 Cut heat shrink for each lead (4x) - Length will vary due to “dam” location

 Remove compression fitting (Item “08”) – use 2 wrench method as needed

 Remove compression washer (inset, red arrow)
 Remove the compression grommet (Item “07”)
 Remove male to male nipple (Item “06”)

 Slide each lead wire through the heat shrink
 Slide heat shrink up over “dams” (red arrow below) such that top section resides inside the
elbow fitting at the AGB casing (blue arrow below)
 Using RTD Sealant 730 and syringe, “inject” approximately 1” of compound into the heat
shrink tube near fitting
 Insert syringe into the heat shrink to deliver compound as far in as possible

 Apply heat gun, full strength to “fitting end” of shrink wrap first (red arrow below)
 This closes one end, so compound does not “seep” out into fitting
 Move heat gun away from fitting, “pushing” the compound within the heat shrink
 Once the new “upstream dam” is in place, continue along the lead wire until the heat shrink is
snug around the SS shield within
o Best practice – rotate heat gun to ensure even heat distribution on heat shrink

 Inject approximately 1” of compound into the bottom opening of heat shrink, encasing the
lower “dam” (red arrow below)
 Apply even heat

 Progressing the heat gun from the “upstream” side, secure a tight wrap first
 Progress heat gun from there, along RTD lead, causing heat shrink to “squeeze” around the
“dam”, extruding sealant out the other end
 Wipe residue

 Using new grommet, re-install each RTD lead wire into grommet slot, one by one
 Ensure there is “sealed” RTD wire on either side of grommet (red arrows below)
 Re-install grommet and compression washer

 Using original compression union, install making sure washer sits square as grommet
compresses around “new dams” within
 Tighten using 2 wrench method
 Recoil and secure RTD leads with tie wrap
