PART-B (2 x 16 = 32 Marks)

10. A Concrete beam of 10 m span,100 mm wide and 300 mm deep, is 16 R 4

prestressed by 3 cables. The area of each cable is 200 mm2 and the initial
stress in the cable is 1200 N/mm2, Cable I as parabolic with an eccentricity
of 50 mm above the centroid at the supports and 50 mm below at the centre
of span. Cable 2 is also parabolic with zero eccentricity at supports and
50 mm below the centroid at the centre of span. Cable 3 is straight with
uniform eccentricity of 50 mm below the centroid. If the cables are
tensioned from one end only, estimate the percentage loss of stress in each
cable due to friction. Assume µ = 0.35 and K = 0,0015 per m.
(OR)
11. A Rectangular prestressed beam 150 mm wide and 300 mm deep is used 16 R 4
over an effective span of 10 m. The cable with zero eccentricity at the
supports, and linearly varying to 50 mm at the centre, carries an effective
prestressing force of 500 kN, Find the magnitude of the concentrated load Q
located at the centre of the span for the following conditions at the centre of
span section;
(a) if the load counteracts the bending effect of the prestressing force
(neglecting self-weight of beam), and
(b) if the pressure line passes through the upper kern of the section under
the action of the external load, self-weight and prestress.

12. Design a simply supported Type 1 prestressed beam with MT = 435 kNm 16 R 4
(including an estimated MSW = 55 kNm). The height of the beam is
restricted to 920 mm. The prestress at transfer fp0 = 1035 N/mm2 and the
prestress at service fpe = 860 N/mm2 .
Based on the grade of concrete, the allowable compressive stresses are
12.5 N/mm2 at transfer and 11.0 N/mm2 at service. The properties of the
prestressing strands are,
Type of prestressing tendon : 7-wire strand
Nominal diameter = 12.8 mm
Nominal area = 99.3 mm2

13. a) The end block of a prestressed beam, 200 mm wide and 300 mm deep,has 8 R 4
two Freyssinet anchorages (100 mm diameter) with their centres at 75 mm
from the top and bottom of the beam. The force transmitted by each
anchorage being 200 KN, estimate the maximum tensile stress and the
bursting tension developed.
Anchorage Diameter = 100 mm
b) The end block of a post-tensioned prestressed comcrete beam, 300 mm 8 R 4
wide and 300 mm deep, is subjected to a concentric anchorage force of
832800 N by a Freyssinet anchorage of area 11720 mm. Design and detail
the anchorage reinforcement for the end block.
Prestressing force, P = 832800 N
