The concept of ishindensin was born as a Buddhist word, where buddha had a hard
time explaining the deep meaning of words in Buddhism so he used the lotus flower
as a way of communication however some people didn’t understand it, that’s why he

One example mentioned in the text is his mother was experiencing a sore shoulder

I think that ishindensin is a useful concept since this is already practice not only in
Japan but also here in our country where people become more observant about
other people and understand some nonverbal communication. Aside from this,
other people are shy to express what they need, and using ishindesin will be useful
in expressing what they want and need.

As mentioned in the text western culture and Japanese culture have so many
differences and using ishindesin outside Japan is not ideal since western culture is
used to stating directly what they need. Whereas it becomes a barrier to the
development of Japanese fluency in English in a point that the Japanese use a
different way of communication compared to western countries.

According to the speaker, Japanese living in other countries need to get accustomed
to talking in different ways to interact with non -Japanese.

According to the text a good effect of ishindensin is understanding each other


without explaining feelings is a convenient tool of communication as when people
ride on a bus they stand up and give seats to older people and people having a
physical disabilities. While the bad effect of ishindensin comes with
misunderstanding and consequences, for example, when the speaker came to
United State, when he was hungry, he said that he was beginning to get hungry and
his host mother didn’t give him anything unlike his host sister who receives snack
from his host mother and by that he realize that something was wrong on how he
communicates.

Ishindensin is part of people’s emotional intelligence or EQ by reading the heart of a


person, Ishindensin is a nonverbal communication that is practice by Japanese, and
by just reading the heart of the movement of other people they can understand what
the person needs, it enables them to communicate effectively and manage their
emotions effectively.
