Introduction:

Sustainable development is a concept that has

emerged as a result of the negative environmental and
social consequences of unilateral economic
development approaches after the Industrial Revolution
and the change in human attitudes toward the concept
of growth and development. Sustainable development
is development that meets the needs of the present
without compromising the ability of future generations
to meet their own needs.

Meaning:
The Brundtland Report in 1987 coined the term
sustainable development for the first time. Sustainable
development was first institutionalized with the Rio
Process initiated at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de
Janeiro made sustainable development gain attention. The
basic meaning of the term is "development that meets the
needs of the present generation without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs".
Need and importance of sustainable development
Sustainable development is essential due to the escalating
pressure on natural resources and the environment. The ever-
increasing population, urbanization, industrialization, and
globalization have put immense pressure on the natural
resources, leading to their depletion. The depletion of natural
resources, including land, water, forests, and minerals, has
resulted in environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, and
climate change. Sustainable development is necessary to ensure
that we conserve our natural resources, maintain ecological
balance, and mitigate the impact of climate change. The
depletion of natural resources is a global problem that requires
global solutions.

Sustainable development goals I :

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also

known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the
United Nations as a universal call to action to end
poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all
people enjoy peace and prosperity. The SDGs were
formulated in 2015 by the United Nations General
Assembly (UNGA) as part of the Post-2015 Development
Agenda, which sought to create a future global
development framework to succeed the Millennium
Development Goals, which ended that year.
The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that
action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and
that development must balance social, economic and
environmental sustainability.
.
II:
The SDGs are:
no poverty
zero hunger
 good health and well-being
quality education
gender equality
clean water and sanitation
affordable and clean energy
 decent work and economic growth
industry, innovation and infrastructure; reduced
inequalities
 sustainable cities and communities
 responsible consumption and production
 climate action
life below water
 life on land
 peace, justice, and strong institutions
partnerships for the goals.
Examples of sustainable development:

1. Solar Energy: The greatest advantages of solar

energy are that it is completely free and is available in
limitless supply. Both of these factors provide a huge
benefit to consumers and help reduce pollution.
Replacing non-renewable energy with this type of
energy is both environmentally and financially effective.

2. Wind Energy: Wind energy is another readily available

energy source. Harnessing the power of wind energy
necessitates the use of windmills; Wind energy can
supplement or even replace the cost of grid power, and
therefore may be a good investment and remains a great
example of sustainable development.

3. Green Space: Green spaces include parks and other

areas where plants and wildlife are encouraged to thrive.
These spaces also offer the public great opportunities to
enjoy outdoor recreation, especially in dense, urban areas.
Efficient Water Fixtures: Replacing current construction
practices and supporting the installation of efficient
showerheads, toilets and other water appliances can
conserve one of Earth’s most precious resources:
water. Watersense, a initiative of EPA has helped
Americans save a cumulative 6.4 trillion gallons of water
and more than $135 billion in water and energy bills
through the end of 2021.

Crop Rotation: Crop rotation is defined as “the successive

planting of different crops on the same land to improve soil
fertility and help control insects and diseases.” This farming
practice is beneficial in several ways, most notably because
it is chemical-free.

Initiatives:
The government has formulated policies to achieve Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG)
i) The National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) is an
initiative of the Government for addressing, combating & adapting
to climate change. It comprises of eight core Missions.

The eight missions are:

 National Solar Mission

 National Mission for Enhanced Energy Efficiency
 National Mission on Sustainable Habitat
 National Water Mission
 National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan
Ecosystem
 National Mission for a Green India
 National Mission fro Sustainable Agriculture
 National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate
Change

ii) The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) is a national-level
strategy to reduce air pollution levels across the country. Under it,
the City Specific Clean Air Action Plans have been prepared and
rolled out for implementation in 132 non-attainment and million-
plus cities.
iii) The National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP), an
initiative of the Government, aims to undertake suitable structural
and non-structural measures to mitigate the effects of cyclones in
the coastal states and UTs of India.
conclusion:

to sum up, sustainable development is an action plan

which helps us to achieve sustainability in any activity
which makes use of the resource. The longer we continue
to puruse unsustainable development, we will face the
consequences. therefore, in order to undo the mess created
by us we should start pursuing sustainable development
